  1. Ashleyness says I'm so with you on this one! This song is definitely on my list of the greatest songs ever. And don't even get me started on the Pussycat Dolls.

in august of 1970, just two months before her own death, janis joplin visited the grave of her greatest influence, bessie smith, at mount lawn cemetery in philadelphia.
(smith died in 1937 after being refused treatment at a whites-only hospital).
janis was shocked to discover that smith's grave had no proper headstone, so she bought one for her
in october, janis died while in her prime, leaving behind a legacy of only a handful of recordings.

Oh, yah - and may the peckerheads who wouldn't let Bessie Smith in their backwoods hospital burn in hell forever.

  4. fairportfan says Another thought - i reas somewhere that *Frank Zappa* said that the producer that Verve assigned for his first couple albums was a little old Jewish guy with a big cigar who said (more or less) "I don't know from nothin' about rock and roll, so you boys tell me what you need, I'll get it for you." Then Frank meditated at some (hilarious) length on the current generation of producers, who show up in the studio dressed about fifteen minutes ago (in those days in open shirts to show their hairy chests and the gold razor blade on a chain 'round their neck), talking jive that even real musicians don't understand, and they know much better than you how your music should sound and they *tell* you about it... "Ya know," Frank said, "What we need now is more little old Jewish guys with big cigars."

  10. Lester Jonze says I mean it's ok I guess, never been a big fan of Janis. Drunk and screaming/crying in the microphone most of the time, see where it got her. She couldn't have held a candle to Bessie Smith, without whom there would have been no Janis.
