That was my best Rob Gordon...John Cusak, I am not...although I would love to be. I would love to be Rob Gordon actually...I practically am him, minus the good looks, hot girlfriend, and cool record store...but now I am just splitting hairs...we are practically the same guy ;-)

  3. gympumpkin says I am! And I think about the film every time I pass the building that was the record shop. Also, the building where they shot the exterior shots of his apartment building is in my neighborhood. One day there was a note on my windshield saying that I couldn't park on certain streets near my building because there was going to be a movie filming over the weekend. I was going back to the suburbs to visit my family, so I didn't really think about it. Later one of my friends said that she saw John Cusack, and when I saw a bit in the film where he walked into his apartment building I recognized it right away. One of the things I liked was that when they show his girlfriend getting into her car next to the el tracks when she leaves, that's actually a somewhat accurate shot. You would see it from a similar angle from that building. Also, my first date with Tim was in a club that is in the film :)

  4. SatisfiedMind614 says Wow...so many connections! that is awsome! That would make it extra fun to watch and see how many familiar spots you could pick out...oh the benefits of a big city!

  5. gympumpkin says It is. It has appeared on a list I saw once of best movies set and shot in Chicago. I don't know how many interiors were shot here, but there is a lot that's recognizable in it. It was nice in comparison to something like Ferris Bueller's Day Off, which shows a lot of Chicago, but shows all of the obvious, touristy stuff. High Fidelity used more of the stuff one would see every day. It used a concert venue I've been to, the jazz club I mentioned, I knew where the store was, he even got on the train I ride to work. It made it that much easier to get into the film. But I would have loved it anyway. The great thing is that the location where his apartment would be, if you get to know the area you could totally see Rob living there.

  6. SatisfiedMind614 says About 4 minutes of the 3 hour movie Traffic were filmed in Columbus...yep...four whole minutes! that's all i got
    Permalink posted 02/20/2007
  7. gympumpkin says At least it's something! Who knows, maybe one day some film school student from Columbus will make some great indie film shot there, and you'll get to see a whole film about it.

  8. Lyla says i think i _am_ Rob Gordon, only with a vagina. Seriously, I did a study on it and found it to be true. although actually if you read the book his name is Rob Fleming, and the book is cooler, so maybe I'm him instead. I didn't look into that one. and nowwwww i am going to watch high fidelity, because it's time for my once-a-week viewing. silliness.

  10. Lyla says not the soda, they drink it at room temperature. freaks.

  11. SatisfiedMind614 says beer too...or is that urban legend?
    Permalink posted 02/20/2007
  12. Joxley says Damn rite...but take look at Manchester in _Life on Mars_ its slightly, depressing to think they can film a TV show set in 1973 with convincing exterior shots in your city.

  13. Lyla says i would hope so, but i wouldn't put it past them. (3 solid semesters of british history, poetry, prose, literature, and geography have spoiled my previous love of the country. but it'll come back)

  14. Joxley says And bitter is meant to be drunk at room temperature, there is a small amount of yeast left in the barrel so it goes on fermenting untill you've drunk it.

  16. Joxley says "The first step is to make sure the beer you are tasting is served at the right temperature. Too cold and real ale loses many of its complex flavours. Served too warm, it can develop some you don’t want and quickly loses condition in the glass.":http://www.camra.org.uk/page.aspx?o=180700

  18. fairportfan says Burt Reynolds' film *Sharky's Machine* was shot in Atlanta (as was the Emilio Estevez/Mick Jagger film *freejack* - Atlantans love the big car chase, which basically runs up and down the same block two or three times and then makes a right turn off Pryor Street and crosses a bridge into New York...), and i remember realising that the condo the cops had under surveillance was really in theSunTrust Bank tower (which is completely office space) and the apartment where they set up their surveillance was a conference room in the Atlanta Hilton... Movies do Interesting Things to the geography of places you know.

  19. chucky says I ran over as soon as I saw your comment on Jess's post....but y'all are talking about room temp beer. And, it's probably *real* beer too. Yuck. I'll stick with my ice cold American pisswater. Heh.

  20. SatisfiedMind614 says haha...not of that Zima stuff here...what do you drink? I am no beer snob...i like Miller Lite...less carbs you know!

  21. 1234chainsaw says Thanks, Jox, for raising a worthy topic. It's bitter time for me whenever I'm in the UK, since usually the only bitter I can get in an American bar-masquerading-as-a-pub is Fuller's ESB. It's not bad, I just like more variety in my bitters. Drank some good ones in Oxford a few weeks back.

    Permalink posted 02/20/2007
  23. SatisfiedMind614 says Oh true...it is the LOW CARB beer....my problem is the quantity i drink sort of cancels out the fact that there are less carbs
    Permalink posted 02/20/2007
  24. chucky says haha...that is exactly why low carb beer is a necessity.

  28. Augusts1 says Love "High Fidelity" & I own it. This is a good reminder that I'm due to watch it again! I used to really be into beer but then I found that I started getting migraine headaches so I ended up switching to wine. Wine causes me headaches as well but not as severe. I just take an antihistime when I drink wine which isn't that often anymore cause of my allergy/sinus crap. When I drank beer I loved dark beer & bitters & I lived in Portland, OR which 10+ yrs ago was microbrew central since there were so many of them. I was in heaven when I lived there . . . until the f'n migraines started!! Cool song by Beta Band too!

  29. k8girl says I love that darn movie. Still need to upgrade to DVD though.... doh! As for the warm beer deal, I am a bartender and we serve a few good ales, and have quite a few people drink them in warm glasses. Now when people want bud light (ex) in a warm glass.. :(

  30. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says Great movie if it wasn't for the danish actress who I am really really really tired of. Very annoying acting in my book. That is probably my favorite part in the movie. I never get that. Never go into a record store where someone will sell me a record with such confidence. Never go into a record store either where a member of the staff will kick potential Stevie Wonder byuers into the street.

  31. patradio says "Let 'em riot. We're Sonic-fuckin'-Death Monkey." Love the movie, love the book. I have the movie poster hanging in the man-cave at home. First time we watched it, my wife said, "You're Rob. Totally." "But this Rob guy's a fucking dick!...Oh...."
