  1. Jess Horrible says JUSTICE! http://myspace.com/etjusticepourtous And I've always been quite partial to Louise Attaque. Zebda is very good, or was in the 90s... MC Solaar, of course, the classic... and there's another one I heard recently that was awesome. Can't remember it now, but if I do I will tell you.

  3. Viva La Britt says Naturally, there's Daft Punk..."M83":http://www.ilovem83.com seems ball-drainingly depressing, so you'd probably be down...I personally heart "Les Nubians":http://www.lesnubians.com/nubiansus.html.

  5. SatisfiedMind614 says I agree on M83...too sullen even for my taste

  6. Smooth Hegemon says French hip hop, like Jess said, is pretty interesting. In addition to MC Solaar, there are the more pissed off dudes from the bandlieu like Ekoue and I AM. There's also the ubiquitous Serge Gainsbourg and his daughter, Charlotte.

  7. mktackabery says There's Mylene "my life for lingerie" Farmer, Patricia Kaas, Alizee, Khaled, Dalida if you want to get far-out, and my personal favorite, Francoise Hardy. I have to admit also that I've been listening to a lot of kind of new-agey electronica from the Cocoon label that I believe is out of France, artists like Stan Adjar which I am digging even though it's most waterfalls and synth stuff. It helps me chill out.

  8. Viva La Britt says I hate you Blair, lol. Whenever you decide to delve into Belgian bands, I heartily recommend "Millionaire":http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=38075673, and there is nary a Negro among them :) And get the f out of town- no music is too depressing for thou.

  10. Joxley says One of my friends had to do a project on French Popular music, he recommends "Kyo":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyo_%28band%29 Mc Solaar and any French psychebilly.
    Permalink posted 12/28/2006
  11. mktackabery says I think by default any French music should have "psyche" before the description.
    Permalink posted 12/28/2006
  12. Joxley says and if you want an early tip for Norway, try Mayhem. They are a heavy metal band, their lead singer, known as Dead, killed himself, and their bassist murdered the lead guitarist (alledgedly) for wearing a white sweater. They also have a pigs head on a stake at the front of every show which they throw into the crowd at the end.

  13. mktackabery says make that "any Norwegian music."

  14. SatisfiedMind614 says LOL! That story is SO great...i hope its true!! Death by sweater(don't steal that...there is my new band name)...i used to have a friend who always listened to Norwegian death metal...or elf metal....it was all about vikings and mythical creatures...truly weird, bad stuff
    Permalink posted 12/28/2006
  15. Viva La Britt says Mmm, Norwegian deathpunk is good, good stuff. See: Turbonegro.

  16. Dale says Too late for me to add that I like M83, in small doses?
    Permalink posted 12/28/2006
  17. SatisfiedMind614 says Never too late for you Dale...skip them live though...i caught a few minutes at Coachella...a bad scene
    Permalink posted 12/28/2006
  18. Viva La Britt says Snap, I forgot that Dale is bonafide emo as well (hence his affection for M83). No wonder he and Satisfied get along so well.
    Permalink posted 12/28/2006
  19. SatisfiedMind614 says lol...bonafide emo! i thought he was more hardcore shoegazer? And both of those are better than Mayer-philes!
    Permalink posted 12/28/2006
  20. Viva La Britt says Your attacks on my John (and Mr. Yorke, for that matter) no longer affect me like they used to because 1) you mainly say such things to agitate me 2) I know that, in actuality, you have a little man-crush on The Mayer.
    Permalink posted 12/28/2006
  21. SatisfiedMind614 says hahaha...i concede point 1....and if i were to have a man crush on any singer you should know it would be ryan adams...although i don't think i really helped my argument there in any way...signing off before i do any more self inflicted damage

  22. Mike the Knife says Considering my affection for techno and new-wave pop, I'd have to agree with Air and add Les Rita Mitsouko as a personal fave from France.

  23. Neill says Have a look at COLDER Marc Nugyen Tan is the Parisian Prince of Icy Class. Using his Pseudonym Colder, "Heat" is his Second Suite of Electronic Lullabies. It's a Peerless Collection of Electro/Acoustic Songs, Combining Elements of Electro, Dub, Noise, and Elegant Pop, all Coated in a Dense, Smoky Haze of Sophistication and Restraint that Could Only have Come from France. .Colder - Wrong Baby . . 24. Mike the Knife says Neill! That is amazing. I checked out a few more vids on YouTube and liked 'em, but on the strength of "Wrong Baby" alone, I'm a newly-minted Colder fan.
