WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Pretty good for a kid from Aberdeen who didn't want to be a rock star

FROM YAHOO:NEW YORK (AFP) - Angst-ridden grunge rocker Kurt Cobain has pushed Elvis into second place in a list of highest-earning dead celebrities, with the late Nirvana frontman raking in 50 million dollars in the past year. The Forbes.com website ranks 13 celebrities pushing up daisies on their income and proves that death need not be an obstacle to making money, with the group collectively earning 247 million dollars in the last year."Peanuts" creator Charles Schulz, whose cartoons are syndicated in thousands of newspapers worldwide, came third after earning 35 million dollars, ahead of John Lennon with 24 million and Albert Einstein with 20 million. The German-born physicist's earnings come from rights to use his famously unkempt image and the Baby Einstein line of educational toys from Walt Disney.Another cartoonist, creator of the Dr Seuss series Theodor Geisel, ranks seventh, one place behind Andy Warhol but ahead of Ray Charles and Marilyn Monroe, whose likeness continues to pay more than 40 years after her death. While Elvis, who has been dead for almost 30 years, slipped to number two in the list for the first time since 2001, his estate still managed to earn 42 million dollars in the past 12 months.J.R.R. Tolkein, the creator of the Lord of the Rings epic, slid three places since last year, but the success of the film trilogy, DVD sales and offshoot merchandise have continued to make a killing for the English writer.Success of the Johnny Cash biopic "Walk the Line" helped the Man in Black avoid going into the red, pulling in eight million dollars for his heirs, while late Beatles guitarist George Harrison and reggae legend Bob Marley both earned some seven million dollars, mostly through CD sales and royalties.

  2. terese says that's what happens when you release the best songs of your career AFTER you die. Courtney played it well, oh yes she did.

  4. terese says Sorry Sorry - I got stuck in an InUtero-haze. Okay, I'll give you Bleach and Nevermind. I'll give him that (back before he had the problems with selling out and becoming "too big"). I just really really liked "You Know You're Right" and I felt it deserved pre-mortem notoriety. That, and, "Unlike most post-mortem rock releases, "You Know You're Right" is not B-side material or the result of recording studio wizardry—it's a real Nirvana song that was recorded less than three months before the Cobain's famous suicide." Have I supported my case, SatisfiedMind? :D

  6. thill says it all makes me feel a little icky. did you see that courtney love just released a diary/autobiography thing, DIRTY BLONDE? have you ever taken a look at the diaries of his that she released awhile ago. they had it at the library and i picked it up and i just felt dirty. there is this sort of aura about him and his death. the movies--KURT AND COURTNEY and LAST DAYS. i have seen them both out of some sort of interest like one would look at a car crash. i just end up feeling he was just such a sad little man. songs like lithium just make me so sad. i find it weird that he will be like jim morrison to a younger generation of college kids with their cobain posters up and such. sorry for the loose stream of consciousness reflections.

  8. thankstofrank says Kurt gave Frank Black his credit so I give him that. Nevermind and Inutero were great albums. As far as Mrs. Cobain she is a piss of shit. I and I believe Kurt wrote Holes Live through This. Just listen to the patterns it's so Kurt. Plus I believe she was part of Kurt death. Also off subject a little I believe Diddy was part of Biggies death. Rap is not my cup of tea however I follow everything in music.

  9. fairportfan says Never cared for Nirvana; when someone said "Their songs can be depressing," i said "Yeah - i realise after one's over i could have spent the same time listeneing to music." (Actually, i originally said that about gangsta rap; i'm not *quite* that down on Nirvana.) However, we see yet again that death is a great career move. (Cf. *Richard Thompson*'s rendition of Now That I Am Dead...)

  12. RGM says I'm telling you something fishsy about his death, the police work seemed sloppy and the position of the the shotgun, plus they said he used his toe to pull the trigger? A shotgun takes more streanth than that. Plus She's Bipolar, and he was going to leave her just before his death. I don't know, man I said it once I'll say it again trade shoes with the Scott Peterson Case, and the outcomes would both be diffrent. That fuckin thing was a witch hunt, Fuckin People Scare me sometimes, even so call rational people, that place where Scott P. fished was a common place to find bodies. Not saying he was guilty or not, but another sloppy case, and a fuckin scarey ass one...
