Finally throwing my two cents in on the big Chicago festival. It was a great long weekend with some truly magical musical moments. The first was early Friday when the Polyphonic Spree and their attack of warmth and loved filled Grant Park. An amazing thing to see live, if you ever get the chance to, check them out! Tim Delaughter and his band even have a way of making Kurt Cobain lyrics sound hopeful...their cover of Nirvana's Lithium was jaw dropping.Saturday belonged to the Hold Steady. A great, rousing set from the boys. The highlight was during the end of the opening number 'Stuck Between Stations' when Craig Finn sang the lyrics 'drowned in the Mississippi River' and made the sign of the cross over his Minnesota Twins jersey then pointed towards the heavens - the band is originally from Minneapolis and this was just TWO days after the bridge collapse...very moving.
And Sunday was just unreal. First My Mornnig Jacket hit the stage, all decked out in matching purple tuxedos...and accompanied by the Chicago Children's Orchestra...wow...they sounded incredible...definitely the set of the weekend up until that point.
Then Pearl Jam burned down Chicago. Such a great two hours of music. SO many highlights here...my top moment might have been singing along to Alive with 75,000 of my new friends...or maybe it was Eddie singing a duet protest song with Ben Harper...no, actually it was the show stopping, set closing version of Neil Young's 'Rockin In The Free World'...in a word, AMAZING
