singing with the girls
So today was the first day of rock camp in NYC, which was amazing. It is being held at the Brooklyn Friends School, which was a cool respite from the very blazing hot weather gripping the city at the moment. I am teaching singing. One of the exercises we do to get kids comfortable with singing in front of each other was to go around the circle of about 12 and, with all clapping, sing the first line of the chorus from "I love rock 'n' roll", cheesy, but it works. (We also had them try to immitate Big Mama Thornton singing "Hound Dog", less effective but made for some good laughs. "She sounds so mad!" said one kid.) Anyway, we did the "I love rock n roll" exercise a couple times and i realized that some of the kids were saying "so put another dime in the juice box, baby". They didn't know what a juke box is/was and so had absolutely no context! It was kind of amazing to try to get inside the brain of an 8 year-old from the Bronx who loves Shakira and try to figure out what she could be making of this putting a dime in a juice box situation, and especially singing a song about it. More tomorrow.
