I just purchased this album yesterday and I have to say I'm quite impressed. The reason I'm impressed, however, may seem somewhat unconventional.
To me this album is good because of two factors. The first being that there's nothing spectacular about it. There are certain songs I prefer over others on the album, but none are what I would call standout tracks compared to the others. The second factor is that it sounds real, like I could go to some hole in the wall coffee shop and hear her play.
Alela has a great and even somewhat distinct voice which seems to fit perfectly with the style of folk music she plays. The instrumentation is well done in that it's not overpowering. It's there to support her vocals and it works well. In fact, her father even plays on the album, which I think says quite a bit about the overall feel of it. It all sounds very natural and calming. It's not too mellow, but it never gets too upbeat either.
All in all, the mood of the this album is what sold me on it. It sounds natural, emotional, and consistent. From beginning to end, each song seems to flow seamlessly to the next. There are no spikes from one great song or bad song. If you like folk music, it's definitely worth checking out.
