procrastination in the worst/best way

Posted almost 4 years ago
i really shouldnt be mogging right now. i have a hundred things i have to do by tomorrow/ whatev!i gave a presentation on noise pollution last week and i, how do you say? NAILED IT! but i also learned a lot, and decided that i should probably start bringing ear plugs to the next live show i go to...did you know...1) when you are exposed to noise 130-140 decibels, you normally feel pain (they call this the pain threshold).2) at 160 dB, your eardrums pop.3) if you are hit with a concentrated blast of noise at 200 dB your lungs could rupture.SHOOOOT SON.to give you an idea of decibel levels:40 dB: rainfall60 dB: normal conversation85 dB: busy city traffic----------------------------------this is where you start doing damage:90 dB: hair dryers115 dB: ipod at peak volume/rock concert140 dB: gunshotobviously the louder the volume, the less amount of time you should spend exposed to it. however, for us music junkies, the human ear should only be exposed to intense volumes like a rock show for only a minute before screwing them up all nice like. thats less than a song! and although i admit i love getting my ears cleaned at a show, id rather be able to listen to music for the rest of my life than... not.so next time pack the plugs! oh ya and if you read in the paper about beached whales, most of the time its because boat sonar and air guns from oil explorations are driving them out of the water yadda yadda yadda... 1. Jonh Ingham says Wow, I need that procrastination chart! I could then put off doing stuff so much more productively. On the noise front, when Oasis were in their first blush of fame, the sound guy took a decibel meter on stage to see what the level was from all the monitors and amps. He knew the guys were standing in the middle of something loud, but - 120db! That's a jet plane taking off. Or a siren.

  2. Augusts1 says Experienced some SERIOUS db levels at Coachella! Had to back up from the stage a few times cause it was too loud. Swervedriver was one of those times! Love & Rockets was seriously loud too. Now who's schooling who here? I had no idea, so thanks for the education. Glad you nailed your presentation! Go Sam, go Sam, go Sam!

  3. Pyro says I can't hear you Sam, lalalala. (the procrastination flow chart: brilliant!)

  4. Bartleby says I love me some lollygagging too. I shouldn't be Mogging right now but it's hard to say no to the Artist. I think you can easily hit 115db or even 120db when you go clubbing. Not to mention the harm of listening to your iPod at high vol.

  8. dachmo says Proof that procrastination can lead to some good edumacation. (ie: the nature of mog). Thanks for the tidbit.

  9. Oatmeal says Oh yeah, it is a sweet sweet drain on my time. I had to ban certain venues from my repertoire for repetitive ear-ringing experiences. Some places just never get it right.

  10. Sam The Artist says john: if you google it, you can find the whole chart... and its big... aug: i can only imagine the chella levels. but when im at big outdoor shows like that i usually back up. i can hear it better and enjoy more. pyro: seriously, google for the whole thing! bartle: i read on another chart that rock concerts are at 105 dB, but i guarantee that ive been exposed to louder at hardcore shows. 105, thats like... james taylor. ive been getting better at lowering the volume on my headphones, that one scares me. anna: that was brilliant! ardy: we all are haha! both being a guilty pleasure. brit: im sure i could have kept rambling, but i needed to work on another project. i should be doing that now actually... dach: 'the nature of mog' GET RIGHT OUTTA TOWN! lol. oats: i was told that if you wear ear plugs it can reduce the decibel level about 26-28 dB. but ive brought plugs with me to a show once, and i didnt even make it through the opening band before i tossed them. im gonna try harder though!

  11. Oatmeal says Yeah, I usually just put them in for the troublesome parts. But you loose a lot of the distinction in the high end. The damage has been done on me, I have permanent tinnitus but I want to keep what I have left of my hearing. If I had dough I would get the $100 molded ones that front of house engineers buy which supposedly have even frequency dampening, so theoretically you are turning the whole band down 25db in stead of loosing out on the intelligible parts of the singer and the high end of the guitars.

  12. Sam The Artist says ya ive heard of the molds. i would totally pick some up if i had the extra guac.

  13. annieander says The flow chart...spot on...see, I am implementing it as we speak. As to the hearing...I wear ear protection, the gun shooting variety, when attending drum corps for my son...it is just to loud for me.

  14. Sam The Artist says does ??he?? wear ear plugs?

  15. annieander says Nope...they tried to make the kids wear them...didn't take. I can't make him...then I look like the freaky uncool mom that the other middle school kids tease my boy about. Some battles I just can't fight (for an understanding of how it goes...read Dales post about his 15 year old and suncreen...it's kinda like that).

  16. Sam The Artist says understandable. im sure i did the same thing growing up. and as for the choice of looking uncool... WELL WE CANT HAVE THAT!! ;)

  17. sordidhipster says ouch. I'm definitely well on my way to deafness according to this... I should probably work on that..

  19. slightlychl0 says thank you for the welcome. :). you know, i saw CKY, Gwar, & Cradle of Filth about 6 months ago & my ears were ringing for 4 days. FOUR DAYS. it was ridiculous, but what a ridiculously good time. definitely worth the experience. maybe when i'm old & decrepit, i'll regret that show.... take care.

  20. Sam The Artist says haha ya ive heard cradle of filth can have that effect. the worst ive had was 3 days after seeing the chariot. its fun but statistics show that more and more people are suffering from hearing loss today, partially due to music. so you are probably right. personally i love going to hardcore shows even though i dont really listen to that kind of music regularly. they are so intense!
    Permalink posted 06/06/2008
  21. slightlychl0 says i actually refrain from seeing my very favorite bands for fear that i'll be disappointed by their lack of enthusiasm. silly, i know. but hardcore shows are BOMB. if you've never heard of Gwar, look them up on Youtube [as long as you aren't offended by lude behavior]; they are insane! & deafening. & dirty. hahah.

  22. Sam The Artist says ive seen videos of gwar, theyre the ones in costumes right? ...they were interesting. i probably wouldnt go out of my way to get in their pit though! suicide silence is another band that i would probably get torn to shreds if i saw them live.
