WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Eno > Mac

when i touched down in phoenix last week, i had about an hour to kill before my next flight to austin. i plugged in my buds and flipped the switch to my player, knowing that the playlist i was on would grace my ears with something easy and comforting. funny enough, it was brian eno's 'music for airports.' all four tracks, in order, 48 minutes of ambient. i listened as i walked on the conveying thinger, as i changed into my flip flops, as i bought some gum, as i found my next gate. when you are alone, in an unfamiliar place, peacefully passing others and listening to this music, things tend to slow down. a bluish metallic tint sets in, yet everything feels warm. there is no sound, the world is a mute. a soundtrack is playing just for you. i started taking everything in, as a smirk formed on my face. eno is the man.the so called father of ambient really nailed it with this one. which leads me to the title. i dont know if people knew this about me, but i dont really like apple. the company, not the fruit. i live in washington, i love the red delish. but as for the computer company, cant say i enjoy their product(s). and i understand saying that on the internet is like asking for a flame war. im not trying to fan it. if you like macs go ahead and use them, ill stick with my pc. we will all be happy. i dont want to argue about OSs or looks or the amount of buttons a mouse has. i just want to say the main reason why im a pc fanboy, is because of eno. him and his six second masterpiece that started up every copy of windows 95. :Pthat and he produced a lot of u2s work. ill forgive him for originally trying to scrap the master tape for 'where the streets have no name.' he and u2 also formed the group “passengers”??Your Blue Room??

  1. auralcumulus says Wow, thanks! I had no clue that Eno wrote that... I have to disagree with your taste in apples, though. Red Delicious tastes like cardboard - there are so many tastier varities out there.

  3. Augusts1 says I have that Passengers album & love it! Never seen that vid either. Eno IS da man. If you haven't heard it I'd recommend "*My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts*":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Life_in_the_Bush_of_Ghosts_%28album%29 with Eno & David Byrne, it's quite influential, although it's not ambient, it's instrumental w/lots of african rhythms, sound samples & instrumentation(& pretty funky too) akin to early Talking Heads music(it came out in '81). Unfortunately I only have it on tape or I'd post it on the dark side for ya. I'd agree, Macs are overrated & expensive to boot. Apple has spent so much in their ad campaigns brainwashing consumers into thinking it's a superior product. HA! I'll stick w/my pc, thank you very much.

  4. ardyjormkiv says just for the record, honeycrips apples are where its at! wow...i never would've thought where that six-second clip was from, but it is for sure much more epic than the xp startup. the irony in that ambient music is that airports are so chatoic and stressful. which is why i need to get my hands on that 48 minutes of bliss and relaxation before i fly to china this summer...

  6. Sam The Artist says aura: haha, ok fair enough. how bouts apples in general? aug: i knew he had worked with byrne, but never knew they did an album together. ill check it out. i have the eno and john cale album 'wrong way up' which is good. man eno sure does have good taste when it comes to collaborations! ardY: <--tee hee. he said that when M$oft asked him to make it, they gave him a list of emotions that they wanted it to reflect and it had to be a few seconds long. in the end he had made something like 80 different tracks. pyro: yeah, but they look a lot fancier! actually, i dont remember the last bsod i had. oh wait, ya i do. but it was my fault. my computer was kinda loud so i put pillows on top of it when i was recording music, and it kinda overheated. again, my bad XD.

  7. AA Coppertop says Eno was heavily involved in Byrne's *""Catherine Wheel":http://www.amazon.com/Catherine-Wheel-David-Byrne/dp/B000002KNC/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1207446557&sr=8-11"* project as well. Highly recommended.

  8. Jonh Ingham says Eno was quoted somewhere that he made Music For Airports because he fund airports both very boring and quite stressful. His plan was to sell the music for airports to play as ambient music. The news that he's currently producing Coldplay's new album makes me marginally more interested to hear it than I would be. My favourite suggestion by him was to have a night club that didn't play music. It was for people who wanted to go somewhere with that atmosphere, but didn't want noise. I once saw a James Turrell installation of a huge room suffused with deep blue light which made me think of that comment. It would have been perfect.

  9. annieander says Give me a Granny Smith any day... Sam, this may be one of the few things we have differed about...I am a mac girl at home, but I won't dare try to convert you (or you either Aug.). I have always felt that because they retain their own licences over their products, the quality is very consistant, if not more expensive...PC, cheaper parts, but then you are stuck with an OS that has to adapt for every part company...ups and downs for both. But I use PC for work. I can see how the two platforms seem to be moving closer together over the years. I guess you can say, I swing both ways... Jonh, I didn't know Eno was producing Coldplay...that might actually get me to listen to their new album.

  10. Sam The Artist says oh so the truth comes out... you are not my twin sister separated at birth. haha! thats fine. its just with pcs i feel i can get 'closer to the metal' as i upgrade hardware a lot (im a gamer pew pew). but i dont really like the way apple goes about business. like this for example: apple is currently suing an ENVIRONMENTAL company in new york because they say their logo is too similar... Photobucket right....

  11. annieander says Funny how they can sue over the logo being similar, yet they copied Postal Service video for their commerical almost frame for frame... Intel vs. Postal Service

  13. mollifire says LOL! I've always wondered what it would be like to listen to this album in an actual airport. thanks for reporting your experience! every time i listen to it, i'm chilling at home. LOVE Brian Eno!

  15. mollifire says Jonh - there are some days I would love to go to a nightclub with no music, or at least not loud music. kinda like wanting to sit in a coffee shop just for the atmosphere, not the coffee. i have been a die-hard PC girl since I stopped using Commodores. the last 2 years of looking over my mate's shoulder at his Mac has slowly made me see the light: PCs use proprietary software which only Microsoft people have access to. this makes developments secret and slow. Mac is based on Linux and open source software which every developer has access to. this makes developments crazy quick and is more in the spirit of design and development thus far. i'm not looking forward to choosing which one my next laptop will be. let's hope my current PC will last a few more years while i think about it!

  16. Sam The Artist says oooh inter-hardware relationship... i was thinking about picking up an Asus Eee laptop. theyre super tiny/super affordable, but i would just want one for internet and word doc. they take about as long to start up as a cell phone!

  17. mollifire says Sam - that sounds sweet! i've heard of Asus, but not this device. i'll have to look into these, would make my job a bit easier. thanks for the heads up.

  18. Sam The Artist says my friend has one of the smaller versions, and it only cost her 300 bucks. another cool thing i heard was that they automatically pick up wifi, so you never have to look for a connection, it just goes online.

  19. mollifire says awesome! def gonna look for one..

  20. Sam The Artist says just a warning, theyre probably not for everyone. they dont have a lot of memory, so it probably wouldnt be good for, say, storing music. and some say the keyboard is a bit small so it takes some getting used to.

  21. mollifire says oh it's cool. i'm wouldn't need much memory coz i have a fully functional laptop. i'd be interested in this for say, mogging on the train or from the beach or similar... and soon all of SF will be wi-fied...
