WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

yes. yes i did get the peter gabriel secret world live dvd from the library. and yes, it is awesome. haha.thanks to brother august here, i had this little doozy shipped to my library where i rented and watched it over and over again. it came out, i believe in 1994, and filmed over two nights. i have his newest live dvd titled "growing up" and although the stakes were high, i believe the older "secret world" has just as many highlights as his latest masterpiece. if you are familiar with pete gab's live dvds then you will know that he really takes pride in making a incredible show for the eyes as well as the ears. his stage notably so. in growing up, the circular stage rotates and has the ability to move the catwalk up and down. however, in secret world, he explains the use of two main stages. a "male" and "female" stage. one is a normal rectangular stage in the front of the stadium and it is connected by a long runway (with a conveyer belt running along it) to a circular stage. another great addition was a giant screen that flips around (sorry best i can explain it). here is how the concert starts, with one of my favs "come talk to me" i think it pretty much explains how brilliant the man is. featuring a stunning paula cole, wearing what seems to be combat boots lol.there is a wonderful performance of "shaking the tree" where pete starts it with a giant rain maker that he uses to "cross the river." bass player tony levin and his legendary mustache is such a wonderful character, especially since he is wearing knee pads for some reason. also, jean claude the piano player wears biker shorts and a penguin tuxedo top... very weird. but the music flows none the less. "digging in the dirt" has some rad camera work, as they strap these helmets on their heads that have cameras hanging from them, bringing you uncomfortably close to their faces. another classic "secret world" has epic lighting and swooping shots, and a fun little exit strategy at the end that takes them to the next song. just watch...they end it with the stereo holding "in your eyes" and do a wonderful job. i think the version in "growing up" was better, but thats because its hard to beat rachel z and sevara nazarkhan. however the crowd in secret world is awesome, they all have lighters and start firing them up to the beat, pretty sick if you ask me (it reminds me of a time when we brought lighters to concerts and not cell phones). and then, just like a candle the concert is snuffed out by a giant dome. and sam lived happily ever after.

  1. dachmo says I'm guessing no one has any love for Peter Gabriel tonight. I'm a big early Genesis fan as well as pretty much everything he's done in his solo life. I don't think I'd be the person I am today if it weren't for his album "So". I'll keep an eye out for this.

  2. Augusts1 says Haha, bout time you answered me! Looks really cool Sam. I'm so glad the library has worked out for you, it's amazing what a wonderful resource it is. I've gotta get a hold of this dvd now. The revolving screen is pretty amazing. Peter is such a technologically advanced being, that's for sure. Thanks for posting about it!

  10. davesonic says Great post. It's amazing to hear someone speak so passionatly about Peter. I'm a big fan of his solo work as well as his early work with Genesis. Have you checked out some of the crazy stage shows they used to put on? You tube has a great source of their early material and if you feel so inclined check out the band The Musical Box, who put on Gabriel era concerts note for note, costumes and all. Quite a site, especially when you think Peter was doing this almost 40 years ago.

  11. Sam The Artist says thanks dave. ive only seen a little of genesis live stuff, like when pete wore a fox mask and red dress lol... but i hear a lot of it was pretty crazy for the time. he is a true visionary in my book, way ahead of his time.
