Ok, remember back a long time ago when I got pissed about everyone making a big deal about Brandon Flowers relating himself to Bruce Springsteen. Well, it seems that first of all, that never happened. However, upon listening to "This River Is Wild", I started to understand where the Springsteen influence manifested itself.Lyrically, this song is very like Bruce back in the 70's - lots of alliteration and the cadence matches in parts. The clincher for me was this section:"Now Adam's taking bombsAnd he's stuck on his momBecause that bitch keeps trying to make him prayHe's met the hippie in the parkComin' over the darkJust trying to get some of that little girl play"Similar, sort of - cadence wise, that is - to this section from "Born To Run":"Together Wendy we'll live with the sadnessI'll love you with all the madness in my soulSomeday girl I don't know whenwe're gonna get to that placeWhere we really want to goand we'll walk in the sun"Also the way Brandon uses "boy" and "little girl" is reminiscent of the Boss, too.I don't think much else of the album is close to Bruce, but since I've taken the time to listen to it more closely, I'm really liking lots more of it than on first listen. It's definitely more complex and nuanced than Hot Fuss, and that's good. For the crap title of "Bling (Confession of a King)", that's got some good hooks in it that have captured me. I find myself singing a lot of this album, wherever I am, whatever I'm doing. Singing in my head, that is. :)I think my favorite part is that it reminds me of a lot of good albums and songs of the 80's. No, it's not hard rock or grunge, but it's what I look to as good music. Good melodies, a little bit of a sense of grandeur, some epic qualities, great songsmanship. It's not trying to be more than it is, but it is pretty large, writ on the sides of skyscrapers, not tenement houses. Now that I've reconciled the Bruce issue, I'm able to enjoy the album more, I think. :)
