Probably my last order ever at BMG Music Service...

Posted over 3 years ago

A little somethin' like this:

The Osmonds - Osmondmania! (My youth, man. Bubblegum youth. :) (Free also)

VHS Or Beta - Bring On The Comets (Thought I'd heard good things about these guys. I went through all the Rock stuff [yes, all...didn't take long] and they had this, and I had "Music Points" so got it for free. Previewed on iTunes first, right in my wheelhouse, man. Full-on 80's electro poppy type stuff. Some sounded like The Fixx, too. :)

Ryan Bingham - Mescalito (I've really liked the songs of his that I put on my Slacker.com alt.country station. Free also.)

Coldplay - Viva La Vida (Robbeh turned me on to this. First Coldplay album I've ever bought.) (Except it was free also. :)

Amos Lee - Last Days At The Lodge (I've not heard much of this, but I love Amos, so I'm all in. Free, also)

Bing Crosby - Gold (2CD set of a lot of older Bing stuff, it seems. Or stuff I'm not familiar with, but would like to be. I'm looking forward to getting into this. $19.98)

So...I've belonged to BMG Music Service since the early 90's A long time ago, when I was, you know, really alternative and all, I told myself that if I could ever find 12 CDs that I wanted to buy in their 12 CDs for a Penny startup promotion, that sure, I'd join. In college, alternative caught up to mainstream, so it happened. They had lots to choose from that I liked, and stayed a member. I have LOTS of CDs from them, if I were to go through my collection. As time went on, I'd only do the "Buy 1, Get 3 Free" sales. The CDs above were in a "Buy 1, Get 4" sale.

However, their choices have become increasingly trimmed, and now I see that most of the stuff they have is stuff I bought from them like, 10+ years ago. No more Depeche Mode or Echo or New Order. I just went through, A-Z, and it took about a half hour, and these were the only ones I could really find that I wanted. The total's only about $38 and I still have $15 from my aunt from my birthday. I was also going to buy Joe Walsh's Greatest Hits collection, but it would've been another $20. I could've gotten 4 more free, but I couldn't find 4 more that I want!

So...after this comes, I'm going to cancel. Kind of makes me sad, but it'll be nice, a way to trim out more consumerism. Sure, I still feel the need to have these things, unlike Richard our .6k boy. But I'm feeling that less and less. I have an iTunes library of 40k songs and no time to listen to them all. Nor the inclination, really.

It's funny, I'm so looking forward to my couple of weeks off during the holidays so I can do some of these trimming things I've been wanting to do. I need to make sure that after the first couple days of getting my rest that I really start cracking. Getting up at my normal time and just getting to work.

So...sayonarra, BMG. Thanks for the memories, and the plastic.

@Rawk - I don't think my phone # on my acct matches my home phone. In fact, I think it's the orginal phone# i gave them! :D

@Anna - Oh, I'll find someplace to blow it, I'm sure. :) I've only been ordering from there about once every year or so, so it hasn't been a huge drain on my bank account...what little there ever is of that.

I subscribed to something similar on this side of the water a few years ago, and I ended it due to lack of choice, as well. I use emusic now which I prefer, much more adventurous catalogue (i.e. none of the big labels will touch 'em!).

@Flux - I wish I could justify the monthly cost at this time, but I agree - great catalogue, lots of indie stuff that I listened to back in the 90's and tons of new stuff I'd love to check out.
