(This was in response to some people on another forum who flipped when I said I didn't know "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and didn't really like Floyd. One said they're a big part of music in the 20th century, the other told me how influential they are and how many records Dark Side has sold.)
Jesus fuck, people. I never said I "hated" Floyd or wasn't influenced by them in a roundabout way. I don't like their music was all that I said. I'm sure, strike that, I *know* that tons of bands I like were/are way into Floyd. I've just not ever been. However, as I said above, I like The Wall and Momentary Lapse. I like Primus' cover of "Have a Cigar". I prefer Kraftwerk or Hendrix or Wild Swans' "Sea of Tranquility" or the Charlatans UK "Feel Flows". I respect their contribution to popular music. Just nothing from Sid to The Wall ever resonated with me.
Maybe I just wasn't that much of a burner. ;)
Just like there are bands that you don't like that seemingly everyone else does, Floyd is that band for me. I used to not like Zeppelin or the Doors and I ended up liking them. (Well, the Doors just bore me now except for a few songs, but I went from dislike to like at one point)
Tomayto, tomahto.

I like this post. I understand completely where you're commin' from. I think Jim Morrison is the most over-rated lyricist on the planet (votes for Billy Corgan are duly noted). I think Led Zep's blues permutations were often times flash over substance, but they did have some moments. Whatever. Some folks get very offended if you do not subscribe to their particular rocknroll (or music in general) orthodoxy. and so,,,they'll stone ya when you're at the breakfast table. Everybody must get stoned.
Lyrics aside, the Doors have that unmistakable LA quality to them...I think that may be part of their un-appeal for me anymore, as I can't stand LA. The lyrics might be fine in either case, but, especially with Billy, I just can't listen to his voice anymore. Even the stuff I used to love, I'm like "What did I hear in that?"
The Doors have good moments, good groovy moments, but for me those are mostly limited to the hits. Good delivery, just...yawn, you know?
And as you mention it, I never really got that into Dylan, either. :D
That's the great thing about this ole world of ours....different strokes for different folks, an' all that.
I went through a Floyd phase in high school, then again I think alomst everyone does. You are young, you watch The Wall and you think this is the coolest band on the planet. Then you go to college and forget what all the hype was about. I would take a Fugazi concert anyday over seeing Pink Floyd, then again that is just me
Yeah, seeing the wall kinda creeped me out, but I still liked it, and I loved "Another Brick in the Wall" when it came out. It's just that I never got into the "burner" albums - Dark Side, Animals, etc.
Like I say, I respect 'em, I just don't like 'em.
I hear ya, and feel the same way Sam. I could make a list of bands that I never fully got into, and even some bands that are praised here on MOG that I find boring to say the least. Like the deadman said, different strokes for different folks
See, now the Strokes I liked. ;)
I still do like them, wish they would put out another album
Well, I don't like Floyd. So there. I also mostly do not care for U2, REM, Death Cab For Cutie, Deep Purple, I can go on and on. And if anyone wants to assault me, good luck finding out where I live ;P
Early Pink Floyd still fascinates me. And I'm not alone, as evidenced by Martha Wainwright's recent and delicious cover of "See Emily Play." But I quickly burned out on the concept albums from Dark Side of the Moon on. If I never hear them again, I'll be okay. Of course, I've come to appreciate Los Angeles a lot more, and I'm a die-hard San Franciscan, so anything's possible.
@Anna - You iconoclast, you. :)
@Mike - I was watching the Art Rock episode of the Seven Ages of Rock BBC programme and it was topheavy on the Floyd. I was watching and listening in light of this conversation and still just wasn't enthralled. The guitar riff for "Money" is classic, for sure, but...I was trying to figure out what I don't like and I couldn't quite put my finger on it....
As I've commented before, that is the beauty of music---there is no right or wrong. But it is so true that people can get so offended and angry if you put down "their" music or band. I admit that I have been guilty at times of....not UNDERSTANDING why someone could not like one of my favorite bands, I guess, and if I don't just let it go it could actually create feelings of mild outrage, heheh....
Like you, I never HATED but never LOVED Led Zeppelin.....and another example of someone who I respect but don't particularly care for her music is Janis Joplin.
I admit that I have been guilty at times of....not UNDERSTANDING why someone could not like one of my favorite bands
That's totally it. They freak out like you just slapped their momma or something.
I like Zeppelin now, once I started hearing the blues influences. They brought the rock, too. But I was never over the moon. And certainly not LZ IV. O-ver-ra-ted! :)
