WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Music hasn’t changed

Posted 7 months ago

A catastrophic scenario is going on, planet collapse; a waterfall of sound, weep of high pitches and tensed wires screeching. A grudge that is not going to stop, not even in front of the apocalypse. Right before the point of no return, a promise: I'll be coming after you! Hollywood-style treath for a revenge apparently relying on technology in a future where everything has changed, transformed and annihilated… everything but man's wild and unforgiving inner nature. And behind all that, the pressing sound seems to chase you with no mercy. The 3d single extracted from their cd "Meds" makes it very clear, music hasn't changed: night hasn't come to a down for the band and his captain/author Brian Molko. Teen-agerish pessimism (if the word didn't exist I'll take credit for inventing it) and well calculated bohemian style, one might object. Maybe. Sure enough there's not too many contemporary musicians out there, able to depict a well articulated epic scene with such a synergy of music and lyrics. Lords Zeppelin could have been proud of them. Nor many are the ones still able to make you feel that small stupid shiver raising up your back. Above all: getting on their young shoulders an old tradition coming from Morrison, Bowie, Lou Reed, Morrissey and the Cure, the Placebo owe their success to the ability to express, through unique images and sounds, the discomfort and the inadequacy of those who suffer from a inner illness that can't be overcome (or only with great difficulties). A kind of pain sometimes unleashed by the world around, sometimes evocated by someone special ("You are slipping slowly from my reach, you've never seen the lonley me at all" - Without you I'm nothing), quite often easyed by the use and abuse of various substances. A pain you never push away for good, seems to stress Brian, not even buried under millions of dollars.
