WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Best Albums of 2008 So Far- The Mog List

Posted about 1 year ago

Perhaps last year you remember Dale (www.mog.com/dale) gathering all the half year lists. Not only was this fun, it was also informative, because this way you could discover all kinds of albums you perhaps hadn't listened to yet but apparently other moggers are very high on! I can honestly say it was the way I discovered and started to love without barriers The National.

Dale, having a busier life than yours truly, will pass on doing it this year. I contacted him if I perhaps could do it, and here is the result.

So people, start compiling your 2008 Album lists for the first half of the year! Make a top 10, and post it here, with your number 1 being awarded 10 points, number 2 9, number 3 8 and so on.

When you've made a list, you can (and should ;)) post it in this thread. Just post the list, that will do. If you want to defend your choices (and by all means do so!) please do it on your own mog page. It would help me tons. Please only post the top 10 list here. If you can't decide on an order, I will, so best to put it in order. ;)

I will compile all the lists two weeks from now, which will make the deadline the 8th of July.

Use this thread to post your lists, please. I would love it if everyone would just do it like this:

  1. Artist- Album (would get 10 points)
  2. Artist- Album (would get 9 points)
  3. Artist- Album
  4. Etc.

Eligible albums are albums released in 2008 in either the US or the UK.

Throughout the coming two weeks I will post remainders disguised as my own top 10. ;)

Also, it would actually help if people more popular than me would help spread the word around, to get the ultimate MOG 2008 half year list. :) But the only way not to make my head spin is to post the lists here, so please be sure to link to this post if you do find the time to help me advertise this. ;) It is much appreciated.

Let the race begin!

So much good music this year...I agree wholeheartedly with most all of the above (esp. Santogold, Wolf Parade, MGMT) but in an effort to avoid overlap, i'll try and pick the 10 best albums that haven't been mentioned yet (a few probably have, but oh well) *note: what the hell? you can't embed music in comments anymore?  if anyone knows how to do this now and would like the mogmail me...i'll fix this post so you guys can listen..after all, that's the whole point*

1:  Evangelicals - The Evening Descends: song "Midnight Vignette"

Exactly what Clap your hands second album should have been

2: PUSA - These Are the Good Times People: song "Sharpen Up Those Fangs"
No one is talking about the
Presidents or their fantastic return...but they should be.

3: Ruby Suns - Sea Lion: song "Kenya Dig It?" if animal collective grew up in africa

4: Islands - Arm's Way: song "Creeper" Not as immediately gratifying as their first album, but deeper, and ultimately more satisfying.

5: The Tallest Man On Earth - Shallow Graves - song: "The Gardner" some will hate his voice...but Tallest Man show that to make music magic all you really need is an acoustic guitar and the passion to belt your heart out.

6: Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Lie Down In The Light: song "You Remind Me of Something" The second half of the Prince's best album, I see a darkness.

7: Titus Andronicus - The Airing of Grievances - song: "Fear and Loathing in Mahwah, NJ" if Conner Oberst started up Desaparacidos again it would sound EXACTLY like this...don't turn up your volume, it gets loud.

8: The Dodos - Visiter: song "Fools" sparse, clattering art rock in the vein of Animal Collective, Yeasayer.

9: White Rabbits - Fort Nightly: song "I Used to Complain Now I Don't" they might not have come out in 2008....but to me they did.

10: The Plastic Constellations - We Appreciate You: song: "Floated Down and Flew Around" Catchy indie rock that somehow does everything the same different again.

Well, you aren't running this now are ya Pimp(even though you may think you are, hehe)@;). According to 'the rules' that Dale set up, a release could only be counted if it had originally been released within the first six months of the year(for the half year poll). So an album that has leaked but hasn't actually been officially released can't be counted.

Pimpy, I don't consider soundtracks to be albums when it comes to such lists. Nor EPs, for that matter. We went about it the same way with MOG 501, remember? Soundtracks are compilations and EPs are not full-length albums.

Why would an album from Canada or France be against the rules?

And Anna, well, I wouldn't consider them albums either. But since none of them will be particularly high on the charts (though the Juno soundtrack is doing pretty well) I don't have a problem with it. If something gets in the top 10 of which I feel that it perhaps shouldn't be there I'll put it in an honorable mention category or whatever. If it's 42 on the list in the end and you don't consider it as an album, it's easier to ignore. ;)

Haha, doesn't matter, the list is on me other computer anyways, so I can't start updating until tomorrow. :)

And thanks to anyone who has voted thus far! Remember, two days remaining! So be sure to vote tomorrow or on Wednesday! And tell your friends that as well to get the list so representative as possible. :)

I'm not giving away secrets yet, but I can tell the race still is too close to call with two main frontrunners and still a couple of outsiders looking in. :P

I find this thread humbling.  Still catching myself up on the 15 or years of music I mostly missed and don't at this point even own 10 albums released in 2008.  That in mind, I do have three 2008 relaeases to list on what I guess I'll call my retro list.

    1. The Presidents of the United States of America - These are the Good Times People -   Damn!  This is one amazing come-back album by a band that released one classic back in 1995 and then pretty much fell of the face of the earth. Every track is great, fun, wonderful high energy real rock-n-roll.  They've done it a second time.  This disc hasn't left my player since I got it.

    2.  OK - reaching here - as this is a re-release of a '83 EP combined with an '85 album - Jason and the Scorchers - Fevor/Lost & Found - Long out of print and hard to find on CD Caroline Records remastered and repacked this and re-released it a few months ago - This is the band that defines "CowPunk" and this is their best stuff - rush now to add it to you collection before it's gone again.  Check out this post of mine for more and several cuts.

    3. Honorable Mention - B-52 - Funplex - No quite Cosmic Thing good, and nothing thing earth shattering here, jbut solid fun B-52's, 16 years since their last release.

Sorry, if I got carried away here, instead of just listed as asked

Charley, it was released on Itunes in 2007, but the actual copies were released in 2008. Call me old fashioned, but I still count the date on which it is in the stores. ;) Otherwise we will one day go by when an album leaked, which is undoable. :)
