Crazy Zany Radio Sunday - 'The Sea Is...' by Los Campesinos!

Posted 2 months ago

The concept is quite simple: a group of people listen to the same song and give their opinion as if they were in the same room listening to the radio at the same time. Stein said a bus is a bus is a bus, some said it was post-modernism, others said it was unreadable. Duchamp's The Fountain is called art by some, nonsense by others. Stein hit Duchamp in the nose and put it the wrong way up, Stein thought it to be hilarious, Duchamp not so much. In short, everyone has a different view on what is fun, art, or beautiful. So that's why we will weekly gather five opinions in five styles, and by all means, put your opinion in the comment section, or if you know you are going to follow this weekly, simple join the team! And yes, mostly everyone will disagree, but that keeps the music in flux, no?

Track of the week: 'The Sea Is a Good Place To Think of the Future' by Los Campesinos! listen (here)
Average grade: 7.2

Linda: If there is something that is missing from LC!'s first two efforts it is perhaps a counterpoint to the sheer exuberance and all the upbeat songs. In theory it doesn't sound like it should work, but as so often is the case it turns out it does. I know we only have been doing this for a short while, but I swear it doesn't happen very often I fall in love with a song, and I did here. May I award the first 10?
10/10

Anna: Was that Los Campesinos!? Really? (yes, I'm starting this exactly how I started the Muse one).

Dark and with a layer of self-contained epicness, not to mention that the title hits a bit close to home in a melancholic yet warm way. A tiny bit pretentious here and there, but not to the point of irritation. Colour me pleasantly surprised.
7.5/10

Irene: Atmospheric song, and its got good lyrics as well. A good one for Fall, really. I'm going to dive into the back catalogue of this one.
7.5/10

Jon: It's deeper and darker material than I'm used to from Los Campesinos. Eating disorder is a strong subject to tackle. The lyrics make a brave attempt at conveying the message, but the band try to inject emotion into the track with quiet loud fits and bursts strings and childlike backing vocals. It's just cliche. I want the old Los Campesinos back not My Chemical frickin Romance trying to sound like Arcade Fire.
4/10

Stef: In order to pull away from that "young band" tag which, if you hold on to it long enough, inevitably leads to "I quite liked their first EP", they had to do exactly this. Now they just need to remember that atmospheric and slower doesn't necessarily mean depressing lyrics.
7/10

Haha, well, Linda was the only one not liking the Massive Attack one, this time it's you. I'm sure we all get our turn in coming off as the grumpy one eventually. :) I can see why one wouldn't be fond of the track though.

I enjoyed it thoroughly. I can't believe their quality control that this is their third album coming up in less than two years, and they still have this high a level of songwriting.

I just gave it a good grade 'cause I was afraid of Campesinos-loving Stef kicking me off the team ;P

Ah thanks Neill, I knew there was a clip, hadn't watched it yet though. It's directed by the departing Aleks, no?

I agree Dale, for a band so prolific they have yet to produce a complete dud.

Aww Anna, you did that, for me? Oww, shucks. *starts blushing*

I really agree with Jon and Stef's opinions on this one. I listened to the song recently and have not yet been hooked by this band's previous work. I get the musical direction they are heading in, makes sense, but lyrics abit wonky in places for me to be pulled in completely, must listen to full album now to know how solid a job they have done.
