MGMT Are In The Fast Lane

Posted about 1 year ago
Andrew VanWyngarden said that perhaps playing Letterman in January was too early for them, and playing Jools Holland's BBC show maybe was a bit early as well. However, those two shows are big in the States and UK respectively, and they've only added to the ever growing fanbase of the Brooklyn band MGMT. They are moving fast. And so surely, when a ticket is 7.50 euro, you have to go to one of the hottest new bands. In the sold out small hall of Paradiso the young lads, they expand to five live, entered the stage. What was striking was that on album I liked the first half much more, but live the five piece kicks the second half of the album into higher quality. Especially their live version of "Future Reflections" was simply superb. A bit of extra guitar play and instrumentals made the musically more challenging second half of the album into a strong package live. The first half suffered a bit though. "Electric Feel" lacked the cheekiness which could make it a great live track, and the synth driven dance numbers were not peppered with a bit more danciness to get the crowd going. The gentlemen rarely bantered with the crowd. They went through their set with sometimes a little acknowledgement of the applause, but not much else. They just stood there, and did their stuff. A bit more crowd interaction or show wouldn't do them any harm. I only saw the frontman crack a smile once. And such a lovely smile it is, but a bit rare in the Paradiso small hall. Even little things as a bit more smiling does wonders. With that said, especially because they played the second half of the album so well live, MGMT delivered a decent concert with some unexpected quality performances. To say there is no room for growth is another thing, but the lads have time enough for that.My album review of MGMT's "Oracular Spectacular": http://mog.com/SA/blog_post/142451

  3. ardyjormkiv says hmmm... there is definitely a huge difference between being good musicians and good performers. i would expect a huge dance-ability quotient from these guys. i also like the first half of the album better, so that would be interesting to see what they do with the second half. good review.

  4. SA says Thx Charley, hope you get as good a rendition of Future Reflections as we did. ;) haha, just a matter of going to the right bands in the small venues Pyro. ;) MGMT 7.50, Blood Red Shoes 9, Los Campesinos! 11, those are my last three concerts. :) Thx Ardyjormkiv. Be amazed how well the second half of the album sounds, I would say. ;) But yeah, good performers they aren't yet, and if you want to organize a festival where the crowd should be moving and dancing at all times I wouldn't invite these guys.

  6. Sturgell says I saw these guys in Minneapolis back in 06 when they were touring with Of Montreal. This was of course back when they were just a duo. I talked to the guys after their set just for a little bit. They both seemed like they were in shock or just trying to be modest-both real nervous. They put on a killer set, though! Everyone is place was dancing!

  7. SA says 25 euro? I do hope you are paying those prices for powerhouse bands, otherwise I would invite you to move to Holland and roam the cheap concerts with me. :) Good to hear they had the place dancing Sturgell. :) With us that wasn't the case, but truth be told the crowd wasn't planning on it me thinks. Though MGMT should've played the catchy songs a bit better to at least try to get them moving. Cool that you saw them so early. :)

  8. Mike the Knife says Wow. They didn't wear their capes?

  9. lorcan says Saw them in Paris recently (for about €20). Audience was a mixture of trendies, journos, and American students. Tres cool. I loved it but my two companions left before the encore unimpressed. Pity: the encore was this awesome dance-rap-guitar-solo encore where the audience finally let loose somewhat.

  10. SA says No, unfortunately they didn't wore capes. I kinda was hoping they would. ;) Well, at least for those extra euros you guys got a killer encore. ;) Glad you loved it, too bad your friends didn't like it as much.
