Crazy Zany Radio Sunday - Splitting the Atom by Massive Attack
-
Artist:

Track:
The concept is quite simple: a group of people listen to the same song and give their opinion as if they were in the same room listening to the radio at the same time. Stein said a bus is a bus is a bus, some said it was post-modernism, others said it was unreadable. Duchamp's The Fountain is called art by some, nonsense by others. Stein hit Duchamp in the nose and put it the wrong way up, Stein thought it to be hilarious, Duchamp not so much. In short, everyone has a different view on what is fun, art, or beautiful. So that's why we will weekly gather five opinions in five styles, and by all means, put your opinion in the comment section, or if you know you are going to follow this weekly, simple join the team! And yes, mostly everyone will disagree, but that keeps the music in flux, no?
Track of the week: 'Splitting the Atom' by Massive Attack (listen here)
Average grade: 7.1
Anna: It's a good thing I listen to songs with headphones on, otherwise I would have missed layers and depth on this one.
Dark and dirty, with a hint of psychosis. And by 'hint' I mean 'big fat neon epilepsy-inducing sign'. Must I say more? No, I must not. But I must listen again. And again. And again... and ag... (voice gets lost while I'm falling down the rabbit hole).
8.5/10
Jox: Well this is certainly atmospheric. It easily slips into the background of a super slick crime drama, or some post-apocalypse horror movie, a definite tune of modern dystopia. But it's also a little pedestrian. By the fourth minute I was getting bored, and before long I'd given up. Best in small doses this one, I think.
7/10
Jon: It sits somewhere between The Specials 'Ghost Town' and an Angelo Badalamenti film score. Extremely moody and menacing. The kind of track I'd expect to hear playing in the background of a crime scene in my favourite TV show 'The Wire'. It's been a long time coming and it's not what I expected Del Naja and Daddy G to come up with, but this track just grows with every play. Judging by the titles of other tracks to come I'd hazard a guess that Massive Attack are attempting to piece together their very own Bristolian crime epic! To quote Stringer Bell's final words in The Wire... Well get on with it motherfu...
I love this shit!!!
9/10
Linda: No, just no. I'm not feeling this song one bit. I'd rather spend my time watching how slowly but surely my cactus is drying out.
1.67 × 10−27/10 (which is about the weight of a successfully split atom)
Stef: Its got something hypnotizing, something foreboding. Something cinematic even, if summons images. Gosh, well, its got atmosphere really, and a lot at that, and that's that really, innit?
9/10

That sounds like my kind of listen; then again, it is Massive Attack, so that's a given.
I'm still in the rabbit hole. Please don't take me out.
If what is on your picture is going on in that rabbit hole I don't want to take you out. XD
Glad you like the track as well Dale. Something we almost all agree on, figure that. :P
Can't wait to hear the track that features Guy Garvey. This is now my most anticipated album of the year.
Just posted my thoughts on three of the four tracks on the EP. Thought i'd share them with the rest of the Crazy Radio Sunday gang ;)
