WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Crazy Zany Radio Sunday - Vapours by Islands

Posted 3 months ago

The concept is quite simple: a group of people listen to the same song and give their opinion as if they were in the same room listening to the radio at the same time. Stein said a bus is a bus is a bus, some said it was post-modernism, others said it was unreadable. Duchamp's The Fountain is called art by some, nonsense by others. Stein hit Duchamp in the nose and put it the wrong way up, Stein thought it to be hilarious, Duchamp not so much. In short, everyone has a different view on what is fun, art, or beautiful. So that's why we will weekly gather five opinions in five styles, and by all means, put your opinion in the comment section, or if you know you are going to follow this weekly, simple join the team! And yes, mostly everyone will disagree, but that keeps the music in flux, no?

Track of the week: 'Vapours' by Islands (listen here)
Average grade: 4.2

Irene: What a booooooring little song this is. I'm truly sorry, I can't even make anything more of it. Any band can do this, no? Grade: a big fat 2.
2/10

Jox: Some breezy guitar pop for the dying days of summer. A little Vampire Weekend, a little Albert Hammond jr. And a little bit dull. But nice enough for now.
7/10

Jon: There's a lot going on musically yet somehow the song still doesn't feel lively enough. Islands have released better. The last album 'Return To The Sea' had a really neat Carribbean slant to the music. It's uncomplicated and happy, a nice track to play out the summer although I wouldn't buy the album on the back of it.
5.4/10

Linda: Maybe it's because my head has been preoccupied this week with jamming every hole my head has which meant I was more interested in Vicks Vaporub than in Nick's 'Vapours', but this song is just a bit too simple and uplifting for my taste. And the guitar that hobbles alongside the singing, hadn't we decided that's a bit too easy?
3/10

Anna: I don't want to be mean, I really don't (you, in the back, stop laughing), but this is another track that can't hold my attention. Our editor claims he needs to be excused to go back to sneezing, and I have to be excused to go and get bottles of piss thrown at me (Leeds festival; I'm not that type of fetishist).
4/10

Stef: Think how disappointing this would've been without the horns. Maybe I'm just not a fan of cheery summer tunes.
4/10

And the panel of experts has spoken. Fair appraisal. I'd give it a backhanded "not bad."

Sounds like something I would agree with Mike. :) I've seen them live once, that was pretty good. This song though, like Jon said, they've done better.

Btw, the sneezy comment on Anna was because I told everyone while handing out the track that I had a cold from Lowlands (the festival, sleeping in a tent, see other post). In case anyone was wondering.  :) Looking forward to her report on that.
