Nr 5- Modest Mouse- We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank

Posted about 1 year ago
Nr 5 of my top 10 of 2007!Band: Modest MouseTitle: We Were Dead Before the Ship Even SankBest Track: DashboardBest line: “Who the hell made you the boss? If you say what to do, I know what not to stop.”Trivia: “Dashboard” was the first single Toured the album with Johnny Marr, Former The Smiths guitarist The fifth album of Modest MouseStubborn and with its own curious sound, that is maybe the best way to label this album (or the band for that matter). The vocals of Isaac Brock are peculiar. As far from an angelic voice as you can get, that peculiar voice along with those stubborn instruments (aided for the first time by the guitar of Ex- The Smiths Johnny Marr) make sure that the band has its own sound. Staying clear from any conventions, they mix up-tempo with slow, they have the zooming of a fly open one song, and it is one of the few albums I've seen that counts fourteen tracks. "Dashboard" is perhaps the closest of all 14 to be an indie-rock anthem/dancefloor filler, and so outrageously catchy you can't help but fall in love with it. Another highlight is "Parting of the Sensory", with Brock sneering "Who the hell made you the boss?", and with the kick up of the pace at the end. The album bounces from one place to another without ever visiting a convential or formulaic town, but while always reaching the greatest heights."Easier than ever to grasp, yet still constantly, joyously vexing, We Were Dead is another terrific set from a band that couldn't make something dull even if drowning were the only other option."- A.V. Club"Modest Mouse have never been the most conventional band, but persuading a hero to join forces seems to have ratcheted up Brock's pugnacious confidence, too, particularly on March Into the Sea and Parting of the Sensory, both wild and exquisitely weird."- The Guardian"This is a band working at the very top of their game, and this album is a beautiful, brilliant beast."- OMH

  1. amber says Loved this album also, but I always wonder how skewed my love is when the artists are home-town boys (I live about 10 miles from Issaquah, WA and my neighbor is drummer Jeremiah Green's mother's best friend) so it's great to see it on someone else's top 2007 list. I'm waiting anxiously to see the rest of the countdown. I agree so much with you so far, and I'm hoping you have a surprise in your top 4...something I don't know and will look into and fall in love with. :)

  2. chucky says When I got this album I got all hung up on Fire It Up and never gave the rest of the album enough of a listen. I need to go back and do that.

  3. SA says Well, that depends Amber, how much do you like post-punk. (a) Don't know if there are any real surprises you might like in the last 4, but one of the goals I'll set for 2008 is post as much new music you might like that I come across. ;) haha, yeah, I've had that with albums as well, that you just repeat one song so many times you have no idea about the rest of the album *cough*Hot-Chip-Over-and-Over*cough*
