Songs on EP's and Singles

Posted over 2 years ago
If there is one thing I learned this year, and perhaps that shows that I can be pretty ignorant sometimes, is that on EP's and Singles there sometimes are fantastic songs that are never put on a full-length album.I never picked up singles and EP's, but now I feel I have to catch up on that and pay more attention to it, because apparently I'm missing out.For instance, last May I saw Editors in concert, playing "You Are Fading", a song on the single of I believe "Bullets".Franz Ferdinand has oodles of them as well. "Brown Unions" (derived from Booker T's Green Unions), Words So Leisured, Wine in the Afternoon, and Fabulously Lazy just a few highlights.What to think of Pulp, whose "Razzmatazz" is really a terrific song, and they have so many songs that are not put on full-length albums.And last year I bought a Killer's CD, and I got the When You Were Young single free with it. (yay!) Good thing, otherwise I would have missed out on "All The Pretty Faces", easily better than half of "Sam's Town".I wanted to upload that song on MP3, but that feature is not working (it stops around the 90% every time I try), so I found a Youtube clip of The Killers performing it at Glastonbury in 2005. Underneath it another youtube vid, this is Pulp playing "Razzmatazz" in 1994.If anyone else has gems that never appeaered on full-lenght albums, be sure to post them here so I can catch up more specific and focussed. ;)

  1. Dale says Swervedriver immediately jumps to mind, as their B-sides were songs that lesser bands would kill for. Here is just one example.

  2. 1234chainsaw says Yeah, “Razzmatazz” was great, and Dale is absolutely right that Swervedriver had great B-sides (another example here). So did Catherine Wheel a lot of the time, and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, as well as Radiohead in the '90s - to mention a few.

  3. Neill says ...another b side;

  4. 1234chainsaw says Actually, now that I think about, "Razzmatazz" was an A-side, but of a non-album single. I saw the video on MTV's 120 Minutes at least 4-5 times. Anyone have the song on mp3?

  5. 1234chainsaw says Actually for the second time, never mind. I have "Razzamatazz" as the His'n'Hers bonus track. To make up for making much ado about nothing, here's "Intravenous", the B-side to Catherine Wheel's 1992 single "Balloon":

    Muse have some yummy ones, too. (If this shows up twice, delete one. MOG is not being friendly to me right now.)

  6. Hmmm says Modest Mouse's "Everywhere and His Nasty Parlor Tricks" EP is actually my favorite release from them

  7. Dale says Oooh, good one Pekka; I didn't know "Intravenous" was a B-side, I ran into it on the soundtrack to the movie Nowhere. It's one of my favorite CW tracks. Lest I forget, their album Like Cats And Dogs, a B-sides compilation, might be their best album after Ferment.

  8. darmuzz says Lots of Arctic Monkeys tracks floating around from their demos, EPs and B-sides

  9. 1234chainsaw says Dale: I, for my part, don't know that movie or soundtrack. :) I can't say the same about Like Cats And Dogs, though. It's only my fourth favorite release, in part because it fails to include some of the best early CW B-sides. Let me know what you don't have (discography here) and I can multiply if I've got it.

  10. Anna says Garbage's Subhuman and #1 Crush, Placebo's Drink You Pretty and my current favourite (Darla will back me up): Lurve.

  11. 1234chainsaw says The question isn't whether Alex Turner is drunk in that clip, the question is just how drunk he is. Better watch out for that Fiona...

  12. darmuzz says I am trying to virtually collect that stuff because I will never get my hands on physical copies...and they did give away all their demos...I also like Diamonds Are Forever and You Know That I'm No Good.

  13. chucky says I dont' really keep up with EPs either so the only one I can think of is Juliette & the Licks - they had an EP before their debut album and, if I remember correctly, only one of those songs made it onto the album.

  14. SA says Yeah, I used to never keep up with EP's and singles too Chucky, but now I guess I have to, because I've realized I'm missing out on quite a bit of great songs. ;) I know, I got to virtually collect a bunch as well, physical copies are not always possible to get around here I'm afraid. And I can't keep on ordering stuff. I'm jealous that it was the bonus track on His 'n Hers Pekka. ;) Yeah, it was an A-side and it was on their "debut" on whatsthename records when they signed there, but that wasn't a proper album. Some great songs guys. I'm afraid I've been so busy I haven't been able to listen to all of them yet, and to see if I can download a few of the once mentioned as well, but I'm going to see this weekend about all that. :) Thanks for all the feedback! Much appreciated. ;)
