Don't You Love "Somebody to Love"?

The Jefferson Airplane had two monster Top 10 hits: "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit," both of which originated with Grace Slick's previous band, The Great! Society, where her husband, Jerry Slick, played guitar and brother-in-law Darby Slick (who wrote the song) played drums. Where the JA version has become an overly familiar staple of oldies radio, this 1966 live version is something else altogether: spirited, mystical, emotional and totally hypnotic from the first note, with Grace's husky vocal a perfect match for the Middle Eastern twang of Jerry's guitar. (Like everyone back then, he was heavily into Ravi Shankar.) It's as if you're hearing a song finally released from its cage.

we found out later that 1965-1966 was the real summer of love, and that the initial euphoria holds up bestter than the peak apex of say, 1967 - 1969.
The scene got swamped by egos, corporate buy-ins and sell-outs.
But here you have the coffee stains on the Spagetti Factory table tops. No rainbow flags, no burn-outs, not yet.
Savor the mountain fresh roasted...
ahh shoot, in my controlled and diverted mind another commercial is coming around...
