Definitely prefer his simple solo work to better known material with X. Great lyrics that I enjoy more as I listen more. Lots of good tracks on most recent effort (Forever Hasn't Happened Yet), including duet with Neko Case. Fav all-time John Doe track is "7 Holes".

Actually Exene still rocks out, she's got her own band The Original Sinners, and she plays with Bonebrake, Doe, Dave Alvin and Jonny Ray Bartel in The Knitters! Plus she writes and makes artwork.
