Touring Europe Pt.4 - Chateau Pommery

Posted over 5 years ago
The tour is winding down. I’m in Darmstadt, Germany now and leave for Istanbul, Turkey in a few hours, followed by Athens, Greece. One week ago I was in Reims, France. I had never heard of the city before but I learned that it is the region where champagne is made. If your “champagne” is not from this region of France it can’t be called champagne. It has to be called sparkling wine. We played a concert at the Chateau Pommery, which is the headquarters of Pommery champagne. Actually, I had never heard of Pommery champagne before, which just shows you the lower class of folk I generally roll with, because this place projected straight up, wealth! The highlight was when they took us down to the caves, which housed the wine cellars. We descended about 120 steps beneath the building. I had never seen anything like this before in my life! There was an 18-mile labyrinth of tunnels and walkways lined with racks of bottles, as far as you could see. Our tour guide said there were 25 million bottles of champagne down there aging and awaiting shipment around the world. Some tunnels led to spaces that were occupied by some other worldly looking pieces of art. One had a large upside down hanging sarcophagus looking object, which was startling to walk up on, in a cave. Another object was this large blue UFO shaped object, which was suspended from a wire and slowly rotated counter-clockwise. It was an eerie but VERY cool thing to see.I have some pics of this stuff to post, but I can’t get the Upload Photo link to work. Is there a size or format requirement that I’m not adhering to?I unistalled and reinstalled the latest version of MOM for Mac, but it’s still not working…help ;-)

  1. jenny says I was in the champagne region a long time ago, maybe 1992, and it was just so incredibly beautiful. My husband and I rented bikes in Epernay and ended up cycling about ten miles of the Route de Champagne, then bagging out and coming back on the main highway with drunken French people whizzing by at 70 mph after their three-hour lunches...but, before that happened, I remember how it smelled on the backroads, just like wine, with the hills receding in steps down to a river that looked just like a Corot painting, with the willows dipping into it. We ended up back at the hotel and had maybe the best single meal of my life there. I remember the people at the next table asked the waiter what went well with champagne and he laughed and said, "Beaucoup des choses!" Lovely place...thanks for reminding me. yours, Jenny

  5. jenny says We did go see the Cathedral at Reims, very nice, though there was a medieval church just outside Epernay that I may have liked even better. So simple. So old. We don't have stuff like that in America. Now I want to go back and do it all over. Jenny
