FOR JEFF BUCKLEY FANS: LIVE 1994 SHOW ONLINE

I was one of the lucky ones who lived in NY full time in the early 90's and was a regular at Sin-e for Jeff's shows, often bringing label executives with me. It was mesmerizing and addicting. It was also great to watch his growth with full band shows and the Grace album.
KCRW here in LA has just released the stream of his live performance on Morning Becomes Eclectic from July of 1994. LISTEN HERE.

Speaking of which, have you heard about his musical?
Not his per say, but it's Romeo and Juliet set to his music.
I don't know Robin, I have such ambivalent reactions to Jeff Buckley. Sometimes...I hear it....the "umphf" beyond words...that magic that so many others bear witness to. But at other times he's just way too......precious or something....i don't know...like i say....it depends on mood, time of day, position of the planets, biorhythms, bowel movements, weather, lassitude and loungeitude, (nyuk nyuk). You know what i mean? I'm not sure i do
i know they did a show at Joe's Pub in NY like a year ago and there was talk about this. i guess it's really going to happen, eh? quite cool.
i'm rooting for Broadway to accept music that i like. i went to San Diego last week to see my friend David Poe in the new Duncan Sheik musical "Whisper House" and i loved the music.
I'm with you, DM. I was expecting something life-changing, borderline magical when I bought Grace. As it is, I like him a whple lot, but seem to be missing out on the hero worship. Chalk it up to being another case of high expectations.
DMDM--the beauty of music eh? it's not just about who likes what, but it includes when and why.
i don't know about hero worship, Jules, but "mesmerizing" was a good choice of words. i LOVE the Grace album.
Hey this is great stuff. Thanks for posting up, RD.
In a somewhat related note, a singer I know here in the NY area- Mieka Pauley did a cover of a song that Jeff Buckley famously interpreted - the Leonard Cohen classic "Hallelujah."
Listen here ask she applies her own unique interpretation and vocal inflections on this song.

Wow, Robin, your lucky to have seen that! I have to say I didn't think Live at Siné could get any better, until they re-released it as a double disc. Amazing stuff. I'll have to check the link later, but I think hearing him live, with just a guitar is like some sort of musical alchemy. His cover of "The Way Young Lovers Do" is chill inducing, but the Nsrat Fateh Ali Khan piece is mind boggling.
hey Dave----i like Mieka....thanks for the link and the NY connection. her interpretation is obviously influenced by Jeff's version, but as i've said before i like it when someone feels like they're talking to me and she does. send me a link to other stuff she's done.
CB--you're right. i've been very lucky when it comes to being in empty rooms to see stuff early on and watch it grow. this is a band performance, but i'm real glad it was archived. the dude was special, and when it was just him and a guitar in "the zone", it was quite a steal for buying a club soda.
Glad you can dig it, RD
Your contributions here are one of the main reasons I keep coming back.
;-)
thanks Dave......looking forward to your next show review as well!
I like your new look. Dave.
As for Jeff Buckley, I'm kind of with DMDM- he's never really done it for me, but I'll check out the link. Perhaps with full band, it's a different experience.
i think it's worth a listen, but i'm not here to sell people on Jeff. he's got a ton of fans that are probably just happy this is up. i'm one of them.
Man. Still haunting. Still gorgeous.
I've had this in bootleg form for the better portion of a decade...perhaps longer. My friend in passing--Mark Geary--used to open for Jeff at the Sin-e' often. Maybe you've seen him, too?
Thanks for posting this, Robin. If KCRW were a living, breathing person, I'd strongly considering moving out to California to elope.
whoa...Mark Geary was the Irish guy, right? you were friends? i don't remember songs, but i remember him very well. those were great nights.
as far as moving to Santa Monica, i endorse it.
Indeed--Mark Geary was (and still is!) the Irish guy. I worked briefly on the US indie label he was signed to here in New York.
All of this rain and cold and muck out here of late...a bolt to sunny CA probably won't take too much convincing. Actually, I think I'm going to be in San Diego on business mid-April. That may have to do.
Should've thought to add this sooner--wrote it last Spring.
