FILE SHARING: I GUESS MY SONOS REMIX IS OFFICIALLY FREE NOW
I love this review of a remix I just did for the a cappella group Sonos. It's a cover of the Jackson 5 song "I Want You Back" that I made a little darker and sexier. It was a blast doing a remix where I didn't build a track under a vocal, but rather had nothing but their original vocals to work with. I guess since this one's not available anywhere yet, I'm not officially losing money on the sharing end for a while so I figured I'd share it with Moggers. You guys can get it HERE.

At work, will have to wait till this evening.... not fair...
The dub fx are dynamite and the bass bumps even at 160. Very cool, thanks.
thanks Cody. real glad to hear that you got that. getting the bass vocal to sit that way was the toughest part.
I would love! Love! LOVE! to hear this in a club. It sounded amazing when you first posted on it, but this remix...wow. Who knew it was such a dark song lyrically?? That little Jackson munchkin hid it all behind his cheery cuteness (and what a great song the J5 made) but if you had never heard the original you'd have to be putting this up there with the dark songs of the heart. Fantastic dub Robin - dyno-mite indeed.
wow jonh......thanks a ton. i'd love to hear it BIG as well. let's hope they pick up on it. that's what i was going for.
Much darker and sexier, for sure! Very cool.....
Great job! The way you constructed it, really makes you think about the lyrics. It is a great song of regret and taking a person for granted.
it was quite cool to not only show the vocalists a different overall vibe for their song, but a totally different interpretation of their vocal deliveries. i was actually surprised when i dissected it and really started thinking about it.
I am unable to get it from that site, but I did however check out your web page, and listened to some of the music there. Nice stuff.
Unfortunately I am way to novice to pick up quality P/E and M :) verses poorly done P, E or M.
But I like the sound of the music!
hey Ghost. you're definitely not a novice--i read your posts regularly. if you like what i'm up to that's awesome!
as far as downloading the track, if you click on the words "You Send It" below the title it'll get to you no problem. the top line is geared towards their members, which is probably what stopped you. but it's also easy to just stream it HERE on my Soundcloud site, which is probably where they grabbed it from. Soundcloud's a cool site that also has more current tracks that I've done, including "Last Goodbye" and "Come and Get It" which feature vocals by another Mogger, Celia Chavez. It's a different type of "listening station" than Myspace.
thanks for checking out my stuff though!
Now that is something I would pay for, but alas, no button for that. Sounds great Robin.
The closest thing I have ever come is a quite a few years back I landed a sharware version of AcidPlanet with a downloadable set of tracks for a New Order song.
It was a contest, whomever mixed the tracks best, and New Order liked the most, would get (Insert new computer/ Sony Media Software Setup/Yamaha MT-100 4-Track cassette recorder and an inflatable sheep) and everyone else would get only the new retail version of Sony's Acid Express.
I failed to even get an email confirmation of receipt. And I worked for hours on the darn thing.
P.S. I am still on the email list and they still do those contest.
ouch. that blows. i was going to do the same contest with my version of "Use Me" featuring Pete Yorn and Kinky but it ended up to problematic contractually so i bailed. maybe that's a good thing!
post your mix!!!
two computers ago, long long lost. It just had the 4 tracks, and about a dozen basic effects to play with. There was not alot of disparity in the contest from what I remember.
Excellent job, Robin.
I'm quite impressed with your studio skills (and overall talent).
Ghost--there's probably a version of your mix floating around the web somewhere........kidding.
Dave--thanks for the comp. heading to NY 12/2. look forward to meeting you for real.
Sounds good, Robin.
Have you looked ahead to see what shows are in town at that time? Anything you had your eye (ear) on checking out.
I'm always interested in checking out new stuff.
The process of taking a Bass, Keyboard, Guitar and Percussion track, a few loops, and slowing down, speeding up, fading in and out, adding reverb, echo, adjusting volumes... Well, you learn about your self and your taste in music.
Plus, if you are willing to spend an afternoon or two honestly working on it, you can come up with 90 seconds of something YOU created. It was rewarding.
Problem is, you go out and listen to what the other few thousand people did with the same tools and materials, and you walk way feeling all sophmoric, like bringing a fingerpainting to a competition featuring Piccaso, Renoir and Monet....
Considering it was a simple program meant for the casual user not a proffesional, the ongoing contest where fun, and you got individual tracks to alot of kewl music. Not many people could say they had the Bass Track to a Chili Peppers Song, even if it was only 30 seconds of it.
Regardless, the fingerpainting still looked good on the fridge at home for a week or so... Kinda wish I still had that 90 seconds of music I put together. But I am almost positive it sounds better played in my head than it would coming out of the speakers now.
Ghost--it IS quite rewarding. as far as feeling stupid, poor choice of words but if it makes you feel any better that part never ends. all of us do our thing, then hear the work of others and think about it. Very often there are also others thinking about it....artists, labels etc; and then your personal reaction is also to their reaction and not just your work. then there's the audience, which is now way beyond critics and includes bloggers. it was an interesting period when doing live shows nightly began to include seeing Youtube posts the next day where my work was recorded on a phone or camera and still had to sound good!
Dave--too soon, but i subscribe to Timeout NY so i'll be looking.
Robin: You are a freakin' genius! I liked the remake of 2000 Light Years too, loved your album. I am in awe of your studio chops and excellent taste. Sorry if this sounds a little fan-boy, but I mean it.
Bob--could you please post more often, tell all your friends and take out a huge Billboard ad?
Seriously, thanks a ton for the comment. These things mean a lot more than you may realize. I guess if you read what I wrote to Ghost above you can see why. I'm working on a cool new track as we speak that I hope will keep you on board. Thanks again!
the word free puts a smile on my face!
man, that is a sweet track. The yousendit file expired before I got around to reading this post, so I'm glad you posted the alternate site as well for streaming. Really, really dig the vibe you've going going on. My J5 knowledge is a bit limited. Having said that, I didn't even recognize the song until they got to the chorus!
that should've said dig the vibe you've GOT going on.
thanks a ton, G. much appreciated. i think my "thing" with doing covers is that they're complete reinventions of great songs. i guess it worked this time!
