100 Albums That Changed Music - #97 - Metallica

The release of Metallica's so called "Black Album" saw them projected in popularity from that of fellow Thrash bands, Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth and into the area of multi-platinum record sales.

In listening to this album over the course of a week I came to realise just how much it reminds me of late 70's and early 80's British Metal. I feel that the overall reduction in speed that this album took, seems to cause the band's early influences to come forward through the music.

I don't know if anyone else has the same experience, but I hear bit's of Wishbone Ash around the time of the "Just Testing" album. Also, when I hear the opening refrain from "Nothing Else Matters", it makes we want to play NWOBHM classics such as "Free Man" by Angel Witch and "Strange World" by Iron Maiden.

I know the band was influenced by Diamond Head and so it was no surprise that I had the strong urge to check out some Diamond Head around the time of the so called "White Album", particularly the rifforama that is "Am I Evil".

I was thinking about what I would consider to be Metallica's best album and initially I though "Master Of Puppets", but then I remembered how much I enjoyed the speed and aggression of "Kill Em' All", in fact, I have a huge soft spot for all the début albums from the "Big Four of Thrash", even though they went on to all record more 'defining' albums.

I think you have to give Metallica full credit for expanding the sound palate of what most metal bands had utilised up until that point, and showing what could be achieved commercially, while still retaining a crushing sound.

Bizarrely, the first track I heard off this album was the hidden track, Endless Nameless. It's one of those moments when I can remember where I first heard it. I was standing in the old HMV in Crawley, UK, and this strange track came on the shop's sound system, I ended up having to ask who the artist was.

At the time, I had no strong interest in Nirvana, not because I was anti-grunge, but that most of the Metal/Heavy Rock magazines that I was reading seemed to be pushing Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, and Soundgarden. In addition, the year that the album came out (1991), saw the release of Sepultura's 'Arise' and Metallica's bestseller. So, it was not until "In Utero", that I properly picked up on the band.

Listening back to this album for the first time in a few months, I had forgotten how polished the album sounds. Of course, all the familiar thoughts/observations come flooding back, the quiet/loud, the separation on instrument/vocal tracks, the tales of how Butch Vig would trick Cobain into doing vocal overdubs, the claims of plagiarism by Killing Joke over the riff to Come As You Are, just how pumped up Territorial Pissings makes me feel, and so on.

As I was listening to the album and reading various articles about it's recording, I noticed that The Smithereens were mentioned as having some influence on the album, along with REM and The Pixies. So I dashed off to YouTube and re-lived their appearance on the UK music show The Tube in 1987, playing 'Behind The Wall Of Sleep' which is the period that I remeber them best. I really had to control myself to avoid going off on a tangent and revisiting The Byrds. Well I suppose it won't hurt to have a little peak.

I must confess to never really getting big into Gangsta Rap, G-Funk, or Rap, for that matter. Sure, I got interested in Hip-Hop around the time of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five's, 'The Message' and again around Salt'n Pepper's, Push It. But, of course, it's a million miles away from Dr Dre's, 'The Chronic', and despite being exposed to bands such as NWA and Public Enemy via friends who had got into hip-hop/rap from Public Enemy's association with Anthrax. I still find it a challenge to listen to such bleak descriptions of daily existence and personal relationships.

I just can't seem to identify with any of the lyrics, but then I suppose that's a bit difficult when you are sitting in a bungalow in a quiet village in Sussex with a cup of Camomile tea to help you wind down after a day spent sorting out computer problems. The two don't really mix. The only Gangster you would want to be, in my scenario, is a Gangster of Love.

But the music, well that is another matter. I am really impressed by the arrangement of samples on tracks and the way Dre has chosen rappers whose delivery suits the themes, arrangements and grooves so well. I must admit the album did stimulate a lot of interesting questions in my mind, such as, "is Dre simply placing a mirror up against our misogynistic, xenophobic and materialistic society", "at what point after this did the concept of 'pimp chic' appear in popular culture". I'm still mulling over these questions after several days. If the album was designed to get me thinking about how we relate as 'social groups' to 'other', then it did its job.

I also got thinking about what I was listening to at this time which would caused me to completely miss this album, ahhh, I was big into Rage Against The Machine and Therapy?

A while ago I picked up on a book which had been out since 2006. The grandly titled,"100 Albums That Changed Music", makes very addictive reading for a musicophile such as myself. I tend to use books, such as this, to inspire me to go out there and check out albums I missed first time around, or just artists I had no real interest in checking out. I must admit to not being the sort of person who gets into hot discussions with himself or friends about, who did, or did not, make the 'list'.

Having picked up the book again recently, I have made a decision to work my way backwards through the book, checking out the albums. Some I have in my collection, others I plan on using Deezer.com to listen to. I am also using it as a test to find out how much stuff is available to listen to on Deezer, and thus avoiding the need to add to my ever expanding music collection.

I am hoping to post my listening experiences on MOG as I work my way back through the book, perhaps with some musing about what I was doing when the album came out, and certainly with an accompanying Deezer playlist, if that proves possible. But, hey, life sometimes intercedes so we will have to see if I make it back through the book.

So, #100. Well it's 'Spice' by The Spice Girls. Not my cup of tea at the time it came out, I was working on a support line with some fellow 'hard rockers' at the time, and heavily into Placebo and Fear Factory, but I did have a bit of a thing for Mel C.

Listening to the album for the first time as, I suspect like a lot of people, I had only really heard them in the context of the singles. I find myself strangely attracted to the slower numbers, such as "2 Become 1", Last Lover and Naked. Probably, because I would tend to listen to this style of music as 'chill-out'. However, I must admit that the album has a fair collection of good grooves, whatever tempo, and would be great to listen to while hanging out with my muse (with the lights turned down real low, of course). I know it's often considered that, vocally, Mel C carries the others. But, in all, I think the various vocal styles on show complement one another. Although, I do find that Mel B grates a bit, but perhaps that's the point.

I must confess to enjoying this album a lot more than I thought I would. Oops, there goes any Black Metal credibility, although I did hear that Nattefrost was thinking of covering some Spice Girls songs, OK perhaps not. Are you sure Natt's, 'Mama' would be killleeeeerrrrrr

I was finishing off clearing the last of my defunct computer equipment at my old office when I found a tape of the Iron Maiden début that had fallen down the back of an old Amstrad PC. I stuck it in my arcane car stereo and used it as a very loud soundtrack to the subsequent visit to the local dump. It go me thinking about 'in your face' first albums by bands, which I felt have never been bettered by the band. And from this another album sprang to mind - AFI's - Answer That And Stay Fashionable. The post also gives me a chance to try an embed of the Deezer player. So, hopeful, here is the said album...

Well, I was all set to write a long post describing how I felt after once again having the privilege to spend some personal time with lovely Darla (Darmuzz) and descriptions of the sort of excursions we went on (Stonehenge, London, Brighton, Tunbridge Wells, my 'home counties'). However, nothing I could think of writing about her 'return' visit to the UK, (following on from my visit in June to Canada) and the wonderful 24-7 experiences we had, could do it any justice. So, I figured that I would post a piece of music as a metaphor for how deeply connected to her I feel and how fundamental to my personal/spiritual development she has become. So, here is to continued transatlantic MOG meets until the rest of the world manages to 'catch up' with us and we are together, permanently.

Must admit to being a bit dissapointed by the tracks I've now heard off the new Priest album Nostradamus, it's not that there is anything wrong as such I just don't get the same rush I used to with Priest stuff. However, with this particular blast from the past I do. Hey it's not a Priest track, I know, but IMHO it's the best thing that Rob Halford has ever done. Nail it Rob!!

In Canada, Going To Have Trouble Getting Back On The Plane

It's funny how a year ago I was looking at a Trusted Mog's profile, admiring her avatar, and thinking, wow she's so cool, and what a great woman to be around, but, bugger, she's in Canada. Now here I am, a year later, sitting in a house in Halifax NS, listening to music, checking out record shops, watching DVD's, hanging out, and being treated so nice, and not really wanting to return home straight away. But hey already got hassled at border control, you know the story, lone guy traveller, looking at the others who got pulled over they all fitted a profile of people who might 'overstay', single coloured guy, young couple. So, don't really want officer blue glove, tracking me down. So, suppose at the end of my 2 weeks, I better go back, if only to start forming business relocation plans. If you wait long enough for the right person they do arrive, just takes time and a few dead-ends but it's more than worth the wait. So, here's to 1-on-1 MOG meets. And the special woman, well, who do you think? come on, just check out my numner 1 'Trusted' and it's pretty obvious.

The ball in the pond with the garden gnomes gets me everytime. It's just so grindcore, NOT. And, of course, Shane Embury's uber-farty bass sound. It's so fuzzed out it would not matter what the hell notes he was playing, as there are so many 'overtones' they all sound the same.

I've always been a big fan of the mighty Priest. One thing that tends to be forgotten is that they can write cracking slow numbers and several have cropped up on earlier albums. Like: Run Of The Mill, Dreamer Deceiver, Last Rose of Summer, Beyond The Realms Of Death and the excellent Before The Dawn off Killing Machine/Hell Bent For Leather.

I had a rather bizarre experience today. A gig that started at 12.00pm. There was a 14+ show at the Barfly in Brighton today. Lineup was Cancer Bats + Johnny Truant + The Ghost of a Thousand + Hexes + Sigh and Explode. I must admit to only really liking Cancer Bats and The Ghost Of A Thousand. But that was enough for me to leave the gig with a big smile, a rather tight Ghost Of A Thousand t-shirt (they only had small, but I like the snug fit and know someone else who will also) and a limited edition Cancer Bats tour poster (run of 60 apparently) which would make a good presie once I get it framed. Made me think about collecting limited run tour posters as I am becomimg a bit miffed at the price of t-shirts (although the prices at this gig were very good). The admin for the gig was quite elaborate, id for under 18's, 14-17 yo must be accompanied by an 18 yo (and not the mature looking mate), funny little blue (day-release) wrist bands to get drinks at the bar. A lot of people seemed to be getting turned away at first although there did seem to be some mix up with the admission to the gig as it was part of larger 'festival' and so there seemed to be some confusion over admission charges. But, I already had a ticket so got in no problem. It raises the question though, why does gig management seem so crap in the UK. When I go to gigs in Eire things seem much better organised. In the UK you only seem to find out 'restrictions' on the door and at the big gigs you end up queueing up for the doors to open and then missing the first band. Anyway, I digress. I had a nice surprise when I came home at lunchtime for a quick siesta. The Postman had brought me loads of goodies, in amoungst mi 'booty' was the most recent Unearth CD, III:In The Eyes Of Fire. The vid below is the track Giles from aformentioned album.

This album is def worth checking out, good combination of modern Metalcore with a healthy dose of Thrash mixed in just to shake things up a bit, they also have great 'breakdowns'.

The track Giles is based on Giles Corey, about who you can find out more on Wikipedia:

Giles Corey (also spelled Cory or Coree, c. 1621 – 19 September 1692) was a farmer in early colonial America who died under judicial torture during the Salem witch trials. Well, I’ve finally decided to have a well deserved break from my Troubleshooting business. Not going away anywhere special, just chillin’ out for a week and getting ready for a house/office move. Normally, when I have a break, I head out to Eire to stay with my brother and extended family for a while. On such trips it is tradition to have Thin Lizzy provide the soundtrack, so in keeping with this great tradition I will let the mighty Lizzy provide the sountrack over the next week.

This band are a great band for various reasons: they helped develop the twin guitar sound, their music straddled the punk era and provided inspiration for many NWOBHM bands, they had a great singer and poet in the shape of Phil Lynott, the various guitarists they featured over the years were all fabulous musicians in their own right, Brian Downey was a rock solid drummer who could groove (and he had a gong), need I say anymore.

I think I will start off this coming week, and a bit, with one of my faves, Don’t Believe A Word. But I am going to post the more bluesy version that they did off OGWT (often played this way live and Gary Moore included it on ‘Back On The Streets’), however, by the end of the track even you hardened ‘core kids will be failing your arms and bouncing off the walls as the track turns into a completely different animal. Just stay with it until the end of the vid and you will see what I mean.

Completely missed this album the first time around. Just bought it today from my fave record shop, Criminal Records in Tunbridge Wells. Although, sadly, the shop has now closed for good as today was its last day of trading. The owner has decided the time has come to sell-up and focus on his online business which he wisely started up about 8 years and is running well. It's a case of getting out while the going is good. As a owner of a small business myself I can totally understand the strategy, and just hope that his online success continues. OMG.. I remember seeing this vid on The Tube back in the early 80's. How ahead of the time were this band.. The barbwire, the white makeup, the homemade nail/screw thigh bands, the munitions. Scuzz the songs up a bit, bring in a death growl and you would have some unholy Glam/Black Metal hybrid.
