WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Dreamy, dream with a side order of dream, please.

Have been listening to a lot of "Slowdive":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slowdive, particularly off "Just For A Day":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just_for_a_Day and mainly first thing in the morning and last thing at night. My resulting general demeanor has become very, very chilled.Slowdive - Catch the BreezeHere is what happens when up bung Slowdive into Music Map - "http://www.music-map.com/slowdive.html":http://www.music-map.com/slowdive.html

  1. Jonh Ingham says The music map is interesting - refresh it and the band relationships move to different places. Is this a deep comment on the ephemeral nature of relationships or just poor software?

  2. RobinH says Hi Jonh. Yes that aspect of the page puzzled me. Having worked on so called "Numerical Taxonomy":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numerical_taxonomy in the field of Bacterial Identification many years ago, mainly writing programs to do the number crunching. I was interested in the sort of numerical processes that they use, how they collect the data, and how they map. For Numerical Taxonomy we would use calculations to produce, so called, taxonomic distances to help work out how similar a species of bacteria was to another based on various biochemical 'traits'. This can then be used to produce a 'map' very similar to the one music map produces, in addition you can add a 'dot' in combination with the name to indicate it's exact position and its size can be used to indicate how diverse it is, although we used it to simply produce 'most like" lists using the resulting 'values'. Of, course how you collect the data is probably more important (garbage in, garbage out) and this could hold some clue as to the variability. Gnod's primary data collection point seems to be here ==> "http://www.gnoosic.com/tripex.php":http://www.gnoosic.com/tripex.php Here is how they describe the way the data has been collected at "http://www.gnoosic.com/ ":http://www.gnoosic.com/ Welcome to Gnod's world of music... Even if you don't know what you are looking for - gnod will find it. Gnod is a self-adapting system that learns about the outer world by asking its visitors what they like and what they don't like. In this instance of gnod all is about music. Gnod is kind of a search engine for music you don't know about. It will ask you what music you like and then think about what you might like too. When I set gnod online its database was completely empty. Now it contains thousands of bands and quite some knowledge about who likes what. And gnod learns more every day. Enjoy :o) This method has the potential to produce very volatile, although, interesting maps. It allows you to collect data very quickly and avoids the requirement to ask the user to answer questions about various pre-defined musical traits (we both know this would be very subjective), which would be required if you were doing full blown Numerical Taxonomy.
