  1. Jonh Ingham says A rare treat. Thanks. (And we should have one minute's silence in memory of Mike Batt, who used this piece of music for his own version, was sued by the John Cage estate, and lost.)

  2. RobinH says We should be mindful of the price of silence. bq. ??After conceiving and co-creating the all-girl string quartet "bond" and producing their first single, he then created the eight piece classical crossover band The Planets. Their album Classical Graffiti was released in February 2002 and went straight to number one (classical charts) on the day of release and remained there for three months. Batt was sued for copyright infringement over the track "A One Minute Silence", which consisted of one minute of silence and was credited to "Batt/Cage". The publishers of John Cage's music alleged that the credit invoked Cage's famous "silent" piece 4'33", and that the trust was entitled to receive royalties. An out of court settlement was reached, with Batt paying a six-figure sum to the John Cage Trust.?? "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Batt":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Batt bq. ??In July 2002 composer Mike Batt (best known for being behind the 1970s novelty/children's act The Wombles) had charges of plagiarism filed against him by the estate of John Cage after crediting his track "A Minute's Silence" as being written by "Batt/Cage". Batt initially vowed to fight the suit, even going so far as to claim that his piece is "a much better silent piece. I have been able to say in one minute what Cage could only say in four minutes and 33 seconds." Batt told the London Independent that "My silence is original silence, not a quotation from his silence." Batt eventually settled out of court for an undisclosed six figure sum in September 2002.?? Silence will never quite be the same again. What if I download silence? Help! My mind can't cope with the legal complications of silence. I shall be more careful with silence in future. All silence is theft.

  5. RobinH says I must admit that Simon and Garfunkel have really altered since I remember them. What's with the Progressive Death Metal backing band. It's not like any silence I know - I feel the icy grip of trading standards - I hope they have good Lawyers. And as for calling for a bigger 'pit' at the start of the composition, well, I just hope that he handed out protective clothing before the gig, you know, health and safety and all that stuff.

  6. Jonh Ingham says Batt's first mistake was giving credit to Cage. Great vid - it's nice to see Simon & Garfunkel keeping up with the changing trends.

  7. RobinH says Yes, I wondered about the credit thing. It seems he would have been better off not crediting him, as it does not seem to have caused other bands/artists problems.
