WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Strange Bedfellows

Ahh the wonders of 'shuffle play' and the interesting listening combinations it produces - this Napalmabba 'abomination'(abbaminapalm?) just came up. With this one, it's like having your brain melted then massaged.

  1. Jonh Ingham says I love shuffle. I just wish it wouldn't keep playing the same group of songs so much!

  2. RobinH says That's strange, I have noticed the same phenomenon and thought that it was just that I had 'overloaded' the software. Just after I submitted the original post windows media player played the same songs, but in reverse order. I find it really interesting how changes in musical formats/technology have affected the listening experience. I can always remember sticking on a favourite side of vinyl and getting the record player to 'repeat'. With the introduction of CD you had the ability to shuffle CD's - multi-changers expanded on this, and MP3 CDs took this to the limit of the CD format. As digital players got larger and larger capacities, you could shuffle whole collections and with the >300GB 'media tanks' those with unspeakably large collections could have unspeakably large shuffles (oh err). Were are we going?

  3. Jonh Ingham says There seem to be two camps - those who sweat over playlists and those who hit shuffle. It's just occurred to me that they both end up being 'radio' - at least radio when it was "more hits more often". Personally, I'm too lazy for playlists and like the surprises shuffle can throw you - like Napalm Death and Abba. If nothing else, it does seem to signal the death of the album - or at least reduction in its imprtance. BTW, luvvin your new Tottoro.

  5. RobinH says Cheers. I was trying to explain to dj ivi how I thought I ended up with this unholy marriage of cute + anarchy on another post at "http://mog.com/RobinH/blog_post/47588":http://mog.com/RobinH/blog_post/47588 bq. ??See what happens when you read about Japanese culture while listening to crustcore. Actually, I am engrosed in this great book at the moment - Japanese Cybercultures edited by Nanette Gottlieb and Mark McLelland. It contains various 'papers' which discuss some interesting subject area's for instance; the meeting of keitai (mobile phone) with kawaii (cute). Some of the papers are a tad out of date as the book came out in 2003 and technology just moves so flippin' fast now, but its a great retrospective analysis. Just woking my way through the chapter on 'The Japanese Noise alliance and the Internet'. Must get me some Japanoise!!??

  6. Jonh Ingham says Sounds like a really interesting book. We went on holiday there last year - the keitai and kawaii factor was unbelievable...all the girls had stickers, jewels and stuff on their phones. Even the adult women had stuff on their phones. Sat next to a teenage girl whose phone was completely encrusted in bright plastic jewels, topped by a Minnie Mouse bow. Like an idiot I didn't photograph any of this stuff.
