MOG MOG

BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

Completely missed this album the first time around. Just bought it today from my fave record shop, Criminal Records in Tunbridge Wells. Although, sadly, the shop has now closed for good as today was its last day of trading. The owner has decided the time has come to sell-up and focus on his online business which he wisely started up about 8 years and is running well. It's a case of getting out while the going is good. As a owner of a small business myself I can totally understand the strategy, and just hope that his online success continues. Of course the bit I will miss most is our Saturday Morning chats about music, sniff.

Anyway enough of the sentimentality, Rob. Let's have a track from Madge.

Must confess the leotard and hairdo really put me off wanting to hear this album. This track is changing my mind.

It's def worth a listen Jonh. But you need time to enjoy it, as it needs to be played the whole way through to be really appreciated. Which makes a lot of sense when you consider the comment that Madonna made about putting the album together:

"I wanted a record with no ballads. I wanted there to be no breaks, with one song segueing into the next -- just like in a disco. (...) Whenever I make records, I often like the remixes better than the original versions. So I thought, screw that. I'm going to start from that perspective. I want to hear all these songs in a club. I approached the album from more of a DJ's point of view, but Stuart [Price] is a DJ. That really influenced the vibe -- the dance aspect -- of the record." (...) "We listened to a lot of other people's records when we were making this - obviously ABBA and Giorgio Moroder - so to me it's more of an homage to other people's records than mine. If there are references to earlier records it's probably done unknowingly, part of our molecular structure; it comes out again and again, hopefully not too boringly and repetitive."

I'm not a fan of her earlier stuff, but I do dig her later music.

There will always be a market for records. I read somewhere that the music industry wants to phase out CD's even though they sold better last year than mp3's. I can see a market for selling both records and CD's as a specialty item. I like many people who perfer record's, perfer CD's for the artwork, and sound quality. I can see mp3's going either way, good or bad as far as music sales, as far as revenue . As always as in any sales bussiness, it depends how they market it. But from what hear and talking to younger people, in the end just people want their music, and for free. As a kid told me once when I told him I have "Back in Black" from AC\DC on CD. "CD?" No one buys CD's anymore, downloads are the in thing."

Could not agree with you more, Ray.

Talking to the owner of the said record store a couple of weeks ago he made pretty much the same observation as you. He had also noted that over the past few years the store was pretty much frequented by people around our age (we are both in our early forties) and most of the younger people were after single tracks or a CD by say an obscure punk/metal/indie band that they were having trouble.
