WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

No "End" for this Killswitch

My good friend Frankie is always trying to recommend to me a lot of what i like to refer to as "new metal". Bands such as As i lay Dying, In Flames, and Shadows Fall carry the torch for the metal faithful with crushing drums, brutal harmony guitar interludes, screaming vocals and enough aggression to fuel an armored tank division. I like a lot of older metal since older metal seems to have better song structures and memorable, chanting, anthem, don't fuck with me lyrics. The newer bands just seemed to stick with brutality and speed however, all of them have elements of the greats like Metallica, Slayer and Pantera all rolled into one.So after popping in a copy of Killswitch Engage - End of the Heartache, i was pleasantly surprised to find that this band actually writes honest to goodness, killer, pump your fist, don't fuck with me metal songs like the greats do.....just a bit different. This is very much your older brothers metal with hammering, machine gun drums and crunchy guitars. But with the often frowned upon screaming and shouting found on a lot of newer metal albums. As i listened to more of the first track "A Bid Farewell" i almost couldn't believe my ears. There was a melodic, memorable chorus right smack in the middle of the thing.....something that i was to find as part of the Killswitch Engage songwriting formula. As i read the lyric sheet, i was dumbfounded to find anathematic lyrics (very important to a metal album that i'm going to like). Every song on this disk is awesome. This disk hasn't been out of my CD player very much in the last 12 months....don't see it coming out anytime soon.Every song on this disk is awesome. Brutal, foot stomping, singing along with, metal that i would recommend to any fan of the genre....new or old.

  1. Spencer Owen says The Jester Race by In Flames is pretty fantastic, and I am into a significant amount of newer death/speed/black metal bands. (Significant for me, anyway... my favorite, or at least most admired, may be Meshuggah. Very tech and extremely heavy with occasional moments of beauty, and one of the only bands of the type whose near-entire catalgoue I find worthy.) I'm always up for trying a metal band and Killswitch Engage's name has been dropped a couple of times. I will find them out.
