MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Artist:

You've been warned, so if you choose to now read this, don't cry to me or MOG about being offended; you didn't have to read this. Now, there seems to be some technical glitches today, as I've already tried posting this once and it disappeared. I've noticed other people having problems though, so I don't think I've been censored. So, I'll try again.

From MSNBC.com:

NEW YORK - The Easter season unveiling of an anatomically correct chocolate sculpture of Jesus Christ, dubbed “My Sweet Lord” by its creator, has infuriated Catholics preparing to observe some of their holiest days of the year.

The 6-foot sculpture by Cosimo Cavallaro was to debut Monday evening, four days before Christians mark the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on Good Friday. The final day of the exhibit at the Lab Gallery inside Manhattan’s Roger Smith Hotel was planned for Easter Sunday.

“This is one of the worst assaults on Christian sensibilities ever,” said Bill Donohue, head of the Catholic League, a watchdog group. “It’s not just the ugliness of the portrayal, but the timing — to choose Holy Week is astounding.”

The gallery’s creative director, Matt Semler, said the Lab and the hotel were overrun with angry telephone calls and e-mails. The gallery was considering its options, he said.

“We’re obviously surprised by the overwhelming response and offense people have taken,” said Semler, adding that the Holy Week timing was a coincidence.

The artwork was created from more than 200 pounds of milk chocolate, and it features Christ with his arms outstretched. The Cavallaro creation does not include a loincloth.

A publicist for the gallery said the artist was not available for comment.

Cavallaro, who was raised in Canada and Italy, is best known for his quirky work with food as art: Past efforts include repainting a Manhattan hotel room in melted mozzarella, spraying 5 tons of pepper jack cheese on a Wyoming home and festooning a four-poster bed with 312 pounds of processed ham.

“This is one of the worst assaults on Christian sensibilities ever” A chocolate sculpture? I hope he's jesting.

A few points to add why I think the uproar is strange:

1a) Is it because it's chocolate? So it's ok for some hillbilly to see Christ, God or the virgin Mary on their morning toast (which seems to happen about once a week), but a guy can't make a sculpture?

1b) Is it because it's edible? Hello! Last Supper speech to apostles, anyone? Ring any bells?

2) Is it because he's naked? Isn't part of the importance of belief in Christ the fact that's he's a man? Last time I checked, that meant certain "special" parts. But I guess this doesn't jive with the widely-held (at least in the states, particularly here in the south) belief that sex is bad.

Bad Jesus!

This part of this verse has been of some intrest to me, the first part. Not from a sexual point, but that Woman\Man see's a perversion and not God. It's the beginning of sin as we know it. I put the rest to put it in better context...

Genesis 3:11 (And he said, "Who told you that you were naked?)

Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?"

Genesis 3 The Fall of Man 1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?" 2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' "

4 "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. 5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."
6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the LORD God called to the man, "Where are you?"
10 He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid."
11 And he said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?"
12 The man said, "The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it."
13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?"
The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."
14 So the LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this,
"Cursed are you above all the livestock
      and all the wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
      and you will eat dust
all the days of your life.
15 And I will put enmity
      between you and the woman,
      and between your offspring [a] and hers;
he will crush [b] your head,
and you will strike his heel."
16 To the woman he said,
      "I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing;
with pain you will give birth to children.
Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you."
17 To Adam he said, "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, 'You must not eat of it,'
      "Cursed is the ground because of you;
through painful toil you will eat of it
all the days of your life.
18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you,
and you will eat the plants of the field.
19 By the sweat of your brow
      you will eat your food
until you return to the ground,
      since from it you were taken;
      for dust you are
and to dust you will return."
20 Adam [c] named his wife Eve, [d] because she would become the mother of all the living.
21 The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. 22 And the LORD God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever." 23 So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side [e] of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

River Lethe says:

Also, a commonly overlooked part is this: God did not banish them from Eden for eating from the Tree of Knowledge. He banished them for fear they would eat from the Tree of Life, thus gaining eternal life like God. Also, there's some kind of mention about the land of Nod, indicating there were other people besides Adam, Eve and their direct lineage.

You were almost there. . .

22 And the LORD God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever." 23 So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side [e] of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

. . .

Chapter 4

1 Adam [a] lay with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. [b] She said, "With the help of the LORD I have brought forth [c] a man." 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.

(paraphrase; Cain kills Abel). . .

15 But the LORD said to him, "Not so [e] ; if anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over." Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. 16 So Cain went out from the LORD's presence and lived in the land of Nod, [f] east of Eden.

I posted the first few verses here because Cain and Abel are the DIRECT descendents of Adam and Eve, and yet there are other people mentioned (though not by name, only as a people) a few verses later. This is important because Fundamentalists leave out parts they don't like and/or that contradict their belief system.

These two points THAT ARE IN THE BIBLE, help deconstruct Fundamentalist opposition to the Creation story as myth, and thus their arguments against evolution, and the expulsion from Eden should shed different light for proponents of Original Sin. Hence, Fundamentalists don't even have ground to stand on using their own text on which they base their beliefs.

That last part I copied from the bible got wonky for some reason, so I'll type it here:

15 But the LORD said to him, "Not so; if anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over." Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. 16 So Cain went out from the LORD's presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

And then, some 2000 or so years later, we get awesome Rawk by Danzig and Avenged Sevenfold!

Anyone that doesn't understand the outrage is being disengenuous. I have witnessed many MOGS bending over backwards to avoid being seen as insensitive. Most of us avoid offending anyone. We would die rather than offend a member of a minority group, based on whatever criteria. How many here would publish a picture of Mohammed that was less than flattering? Or any picture of The Prophet? So why is it OK to offend Catholics specifically. and Christians in general. How come IN THIS INSTANCE, the offended parties are ridiculed? I think its very hypocritical. Don't you?

I just say in a nutshell, it's more of auguments of worldviews (Philosophy's), we all have them. Yea we can say we know that but do we realize that, I was talking to a buddy of mine who was a Born Again Christian. And he agree's with me that most of Christians don't realize that this is a war of Philosophies and Worldview's. Furthermore you can't change or be someone's willpower. Yea you can bully or deceive, and mocking gets you nowhere...

I'll end here...

Seeing that it's canceled makes me shed a tear. Speaking as an artist, the fact that it is now canceled offends me. In a sense, it offends my way of life, my beliefs, my faith or religion.

Sorry about posting vid there since it was already in original post (Meant to email it to a friend) Although I'm personally offended by the chocolate Jesus, I will defend the artist's right to create it ..just as much as I will defend my right to protest against the idiocy of the hotel that thought pretended they didn't know Holy Week was coming up and it would be controversial.

The only thing I find offensive is how religious groups are able to 'censor' art, film and writing that they find objectionable. I am certain no one would have issues with this chocolate Jesus:

A friend and I used to joke about mass producing chocolate Jesi to sell 'round eastertime. Part of what made this funny to us was the knowledge that it would most definitely offend quite a few people here in the US. Another part of what made it funny to us was that it was so easy to justify it both in terms that would be considered pious and those that would be deemed critical of contemporary easter/holiday celebration rituals and christianity in general.

Deadman: Although I don't have the wherewithal at this particular moment in time to tackle your question in whole, I will share with you a thought on why it might be ok to ridicule catholics or christians. One thing that distinguishes religious groups from other groups is that they have both an ethos and political ambition coupled with voluntary membership, a combination that many minority groups do not have. Kind of like it being ok to make fun of my stupid shoes, but not ok to make fun of the mongoloid kid's stupid shoes.

Deadmandeadman, I agree with your point and that's why I have equal opportunity disdain for all organized religion. I particularly enjoy letting my wrath loose on the religions that feel it's their business to interfere with other people's lives; that includes, at the top of the list, Scientologists, Fundamentalist Christians AND Extremist Muslims. More evil has been committed in the name of God through history than any other evil on Earth, with the possible exception of Hitler's genocide and what's been going on in Africa for the past several decades.

There is not enough room on Earth for everything that someone holds sacred.

I have to agree w/you River, I also loathe any type of organized religion & so much evil is done in the name of God it's amazing. Look at our "wonderful" prez w. who talks about talking w/god & "god told him to do" such & such but then wages war on innocent people for greed of oil. Religions are a man made phenomenon supposedly inspired by god but not really of god. They were created to thwart belief in paganism & to control the masses.

I was raised in a Baptist upbringing & they are just as bad as Catholics in judging others & discriminating against groups who don't "fit" in their particular categories. And then they try to tell us what's good/bad for us. I'm personally sick of religions trying to tell me what I can & can't see. If I want to see a naked chocolate anatomically correct jesus then I'm going to view it damnit! And thank you Brand X for posting the pic of Piss Christ that caused such controversy a few years back. I firmly believe there needs to be more art that offends & pushes the buttons of the religious right! The penduluum has been to the right far too long & now is on it's way back to the left(albeit slowly).

And thanks River for posting this & being willing to take the flack for doing so.
