MOG MOG

BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

Inspired by my trused Mog ebuzzmiller, I've decided to dig into my psychedelic collection and throw out some recommendations. Here's #1.

Jefferson Airplane is my favorite band of the 1960s, no contest. From "Takes Off" through "Volunteers," they rode the unrest of the decade on a giant mushroom and none of their peers came even remotely close to achieving what they did.

After the success of "Surrealistic Pillow," and its singles "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love" RCA let the band loose in a studio to do whatever they wanted, sans adult supervision. What they wanted to do was drop a lot of acid and turn the mikes on, and that is pretty much what they did. As trippy as this album is, it is very cohesive and the best damned psychedelic album I've ever heard. I'm tempted to push the Grace Slick tracks over the others, but everything about this album is so good that in this instance she is only one great element in a bigger project. This is an album that, once I start it, I will listen straight through, wearing a really big smile.

If you could only own one psychedelic album, I'd strongly urge you to get this one.
