Recommended Psychedelia #11

Posted over 5 years ago
I've been wicked busy lately, so sorry for the gap between #s 10 and 11.The Seeds are probably best known for their 1966 hit "Pushin' Too Hard," which is a terrific garage-psych single and deservedly ends up on compilations pretty regularly. That track was on their eponymous debut album, which was quickly followed by the considerably better "A Web of Sound." Those two albums have seemingly always been available on a single cd, albeit with one track from the first album inexplicably missing. The following year, that infamous Summer of Love, saw the release of "Future," their most psychedelic effort, though not quite their best (that would be "A Web of Sound," in my opinion). With song titles like "March of the Flower Children," "Travel With Your Mind," and "Flower Lady and Her Assistant," you can't help but have an idea of what you're in for. One of the tracks from this album was used in the film "Psych-Out!" exclamation point in film title, not mine. All of the band's records were lo-fi and stand in stark contrast to the comparably more lush albums I've recommended so far. While those other albums evoke wide-open spaces and varied textures, "Future" has a cold, close quality to it. It's trippy enough but sounds more like it was recorded in a damp basement than in a de luxe recording studio.I mentioned "Pushin' Too Hard" because it's likely you already know it and because the band reuses it on this album, albeit morphed into other tracks. The Seeds have been accused of being short on ideas, and this may be true, but the few they had worked for them and, given that the debut album that contains "Pushin' Too Hard," isn't so great (though I happen to like it), I like hearing its components used to good effect on this, their final album.Unlike their first two albums, "Future" isn't so easy to find. It has never been issued on cd in the US but is currently available as part of a compilation in the UK.

  1. HoneymoonMusic says Oh YES!!! Future is an amazing album, you're so right on! And why the hell hasn't it been re-issued? With all the garage and psych re-issuing going on, you'd think someone would pick up this gem and give a proper release in the US.
