It's back to San Francisco for more of the good stuff. Quicksilver Messenger Service is another band whose catalogue I don't know beyond one album. The band had an everchanging lineup and from what I gather, no two albums are really alike. "Happy Trails," the band's second album, was recorded live in 1969 and is said to give a good taste of what a live set of SF psych was. As with all such recordings, there is a lot of jamming, but don't think drum solos and band members taking turns grabbing the spotlight. There is also minimal crowd noise, blessedly. This album is a group effort and the first half of the album, essentially one long, picaresque take on Bo Diddly's "Who Do You Love" is sublime. For the entire album the band roams a psychedlic landscape that is absolutely transfixing.Once again, I'd be happy to hear what others have to think of this album.

  1. ivylander says This was one of the great albums of the late '60s. They were so empathic, for about eight months. Then Dino Valente showed up. I haven't rolled a joint in many's the long year, but just looking at that album cover.....

  2. El Monko and Son says Absolutely essential. Along with Surrealistic Pillow and Cheap Thrills, a first-rate primary document of the SF music scene, and one hell of a jam to boot. I tried to include "Who Do You Love" on a mix disc I sent to my best friend, whose taste I respect more than anyone else in the world except maybe Greil Marcus. The disc encompassed samples of all my favorite stuff that he was unfamiliar with, and I could not figure out how to fit it with the other stuff. I ended up sending the truncated version from "Greatest Hits," and he did not like it at all. I can only assume that it is a piece wherein one needs to see the big picture. In fact, you used some word for it like "pastoral" but better, to imply a large picture (but I can't go back to see it without starting over), and I think you really hit the nail on the head.

  3. El Monko and Son says Oh, you said "picaresque," meaning "related to a story in which a rogue is the hero." Well, that's true, too. But in my memory, in transmogrified into something like "picturesque," and I think the word I would use to express my thought here is "panoramic."

  4. RevUp64 says I hesitated to use the word picaresque but it was the only one I could think of that came close. Panoramic would, indeed have been a better choice =)
