WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Back and forward with Assembly of Dust

Posted 4 months ago

There's something about discovering a new band that is really rejuvenating. My sudden obsession with Assembly of Dust is taking me both forward and back. Back to the sounds of Little Feat, and the feel of a mellow, optimistic L.A. summer afternoon, and forward into a new world of a new band. They're a jam band, and I didn't think I liked that kind of music (although Ryan Adams, who I love, has many jammy fans and aspects but that seemed like just one facet of Ryanworld that I could take or leave), so it's whole new vibe to get into. It's all about the live show, so I think we may try to see them in L.A. next time we're there. Reid Genauer has a gorgeous tenor voice and writes soaring, poetic songs that generally put me in a great mood. The new album, "Some Assembly Required" has amazing guest spots from Richie Havens, Mike Gordon from Phish, Bela Fleck, Grace Potter and many others. Grace Potter in particular I've always kind of wanted to get into so I'm inspired to check out more of her stuff now. By the way, the Grace Potter tune is called "Light Blue Lover"...one of my own songs I've had kicking around for over 10 years is something called "Light Blue Love," so now I'm intending to dust that one off and maybe try to play it at my next gig! So, thank you AOD for opening up a world of new stuff.
