Possibly one of the best songwriters of my generation (can i say that?) as far as pop and folk/country go. Also the recipient of two Grammy Awards for Wilcos fifth studio album A Ghost Is Born, including Best Alternative Music Album.
A funny story about Wilco is that in mid 2001 whilst demoing what is widely regarded as their best album, 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot', their record label Reprise Records (a AOL Time Warner subsidiary label), dropped the band as they felt the demos displayed no radio-friendly crossover songs & the labels plea for such material was being nonchalantly & widely dismissed. Before Wilco could offer Reprise $50,000 for full rights to the songs, they received a telephone call offering them the rights for free. Determined not to let this significantly delay the albums release & discourage the sharing of low quality demos which had been leaked, Tweedy began streaming the album in its entirety on Wilcos official webiste. During late 2001, the band decided to sign a deal with Nonesuch Records (ironically, another AOL Time Warner subsidiary) to release Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and eventually did in early 2002 to mass critical acclaim, selling over half a million copies, topping several Album of the Year lists and even more significantly, making Q's '100 Greatest Albums Ever' poll.
So basically, Wilco recorded and produced Yankee Hotel Foxtrot with Reprise, received the rights to the album for free, and then sold it back to a different AOL Time Warner affiliate.
Taking a break from Wilco after his stint in rehab, all the rage in America!, he went on a solo tour of the Pacific Northwest. This is a recording of 'Shot In The Arm' from that tour, recorded in Seattle.
