Smashing Pumpkins......you will Obey

Posted over 2 years ago
To capture the mood of our times with the album cover for ZEITGEIST—the forthcoming album by THE SMASHING PUMPKINS—the band turned to acclaimed Obey Giant graphic designer and illustrator Shepard Fairey. After being given the album’s title to work with, Fairey came up with a haunting image: it’s a red, black and white illustration of a drowning Statue of Liberty, positioned in front of the sun that is either setting or rising.“Like a great artist can do, Shepard had summed up very simply a lot of complex themes,” says the band’s Billy Corgan. “He also used the type font from our very first single, and I asked him about it and he had no idea. He was just on point.”Says Fairey, whose Andre the Giant street art has been seen around the world and whose credits include creating anti-war posters and the poster art for the feature film Walk The Line:“I think global warming is an issue that is currently relevant, time sensitive, and a symptom of the shortsightedness of the U.S. As a broader metaphor, the drowning Statue of Liberty, a revered icon of the U.S., symbolizes the eminent demise of many of the ideals upon which the nation was founded. Civil liberties, freedom of speech, privacy, etc. have been decreasing since 9/11. The sun in the image could either be setting or rising and this ambiguity shows that there is still hope to turn things around.”Due out July 10, ZEITGEIST (Martha’s Music/Reprise) marks the Smashing Pumpkins’ sixth album and first of new material since 2000. It was produced by Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin, with Roy Thomas Baker and Terry Date working separately on various tracks, and represents the culmination of two years of work. ZEITGEIST features the first single “Tarantula”—due to arrive at radio May 22—and such songs as album opener “Doomsday Clock,” “United States” and “For God And Country.”Asked why he feels the image captures the feeling of the world at this time, Fairey says: “The U.S. is the dominant global force. When things are going wrong in the U.S. they are probably going wrong around the world. I think this image conveys both the U.S. situation and its larger global implications.”The illustration derives strength from the usage of the color red. Explains Fairey: “I use red frequently because it is a visually powerful, emotionally potent color. Red gets people’s attention. In this case there is the added possibility that the red liquid could be blood, giving it an even more sinister sense of foreboding. Red helps people to realize immediately that something is wrong and the image is not a soothing postcard.”Even if the music is not "Pumpkins" worthy, the cover art is worth the buy.

  3. watchbatteries says I've heard the new single, I didn't like it. I was also paying attention to other stuff and was never a huge fan, so I didn't fully hear it. But eh.

  4. Dale says I don't know, I didn't have high hopes, but maybe ol' Billy's got enough of a burr up his tush that he'll make a real statement with this album. That cover is lookin' real good.

  5. Anonymous says wow! what an image to have for an album cover, lot of meaning of course behind that drowning statue of liberty.

  6. tybees says Much like the idea of a new Pumpkins record, I don't know how I feel about this one. Very pseudo-apocalyptic. Is that a word? Sure why not...:)

  7. zoot says wow, shepard fairey really hit the ball out of the park with this one. nice job, shep! he uses red, white & black so often, that i had a hunch it was his work before seeing his name in the ID tag. here's his poster art from the film 'walk the line'.

  8. brickbat says i have a problem. i freakin hate the pumpkins. really. i do. and yet, i love the shepherd. like, the best christmas present i got last year was an obey hoodie. and i've got an original giant sticker on my amp. damnit. just...yeah.

  9. Mike the Knife says Yeah, zoot. The cover is one of the artist's typically resonant images but it doesn't touch his "Walk the Line" poster. And, of course, this is not really a Pumpkins reunion, but Billy exploiting a brand he owns.

  10. Augusts1 says The Pumpkins are doing 11 night stints at the Fillmore in SF coming up July 15- Aug 1st & their all sold out. I thought about going but I'm still not happy w/Billy for breaking up the band in the first place, damn him. Then he teased us w/Zwan & broke them up. Then he did a solo cd that didn't do too well(but I liked it). I think Billy's quite the confused one at the moment. Sheesh. I like that album cover though, pretty cool & quite controversial. I wonder if Billy's gonna get all political on us now?

  11. Taylspin says Thank you for sharing Rawk, this album cover is sweet. Red is my favorite color for all the reasons Fairey mentioned (and because it looks nice with blonde hair...tee hee). And although the awesome cover may belie another letdown album, I still credit the Pumpkins for their amazing stuff that got me through high school alive. And maybe the cover will entice me to listen. Augusts1 makes an interesting point - do Billy and Trent think they will gain more fans by acting more politically responsible? Or are they suddenly sick of the current administration and moved to make an album about it? If I could make music, not this monosyllabic crap I bang out on my Playskool xylophone every night, but real music, I would have recorded an album the very morning that we heard about the vote in November 2000.

  12. Augusts1 says er, I meant "an 11 night stint at the Fillmore". No plural on "stint". Yea Taylspin, I'd agree w/you. It's weird that Billy is finally getting around to making political(or seemingly political, since the titles are leaning that way as well as the cover art)music after going through the '90s(their entire career)not doing so. After watching all that W. has lied & scammed about though I guess I'm not too surprised that Billy is doing it.

  14. moovyphreak says SP is also playing 9 shows at The Orange Peel in Asheville, NC (probably the venue's biggest band booking to date) and I tried to get tickets, since I live about an hour away. TicketWeb who was handling the orders got slammed so bad on Saturday afternoon/evening, they were forced to switch to Ticketmaster and continue the sale on Monday evening. One of my friends (who probably goes to close to 50 concerts a year) managed to get tickets, but they supposedly had people from all over the world attempting to come to this series of shows in both Asheville and San Francisco.

  15. summer eyes says hmm. i must say, i hope it is political, because with that kind of cover art you have to have a strong message behind it. i just dunno if they'll deliver.

  16. contrabandwidth says I've always found the Pumpkins overly self righteous in their opinions and music (or should I just say that I've found Billy Corgan to be). I Love Fairey's work, and the cover actually reminds me more of a KMFDM cover. It's a nice cover but I doubt I'll bother since I haven't give them a chance since the over bloated "Melon Collie..." Am I the only one that really feels like it's not saying much because their preaching to the choir? I love what Fairley's done, but I don't know if anything the pumpkins say is really going to rile anyone up. The image really doesn't feel to subversive to me, maybe because it's been used so much. That "Walk the Line" poster is much more aesthetically pleasing.

  18. fistula spume says I saw the Giant when I was in Boston last year. It was about 5 stories up on the side of a building that was about 12 stories tall. There was a lot of graf on the wall at that level which I thought was cool but the Giant was the cool part. It was a huge picture. I didn't really have anyone that could share in my excitement at having saw that. The Giant rules! Cool Pumpkins cover too.

  19. contrabandwidth says I had a similar experience where I saw a Kaws piece on a building (it looked real old) sitting in traffic waiting to go through the Holland Tunnel. I pointed it out to my sister, and she was just surprised that graffiti would be mean anything to anyone. It was lost on her too.

  20. Lizziegreeneyes says OK - did Fairey do the King for a Day Fool For a Lifetime Faith No More album cover Red was the theme that day as well. I LOVE that cover - he also did at least one of the covers for one of the singles from it - if it's the same guy. I am all kinds of torn over this whole "getting the band back together" issue. I *LOVED* the pumpkins though I never got the last album - for the life of me can't even remember the name - something like Ava Adore ... er something. Gish is a near perfect album for me ... Mellon Collie ... I think was way ahead of it's time & like the RHCP's latest double disc - both were solid discs (again, my opinion). But when I heard he was "getting the band back together" & that band consisted of only two of the four members ... that's not getting the band back together - that's getting two out of four people to merge with other musicians ... here's a Benjamin, so why don't you go out and get yourself a nice new name - something frilly with a peek-a-boo top ??? & as much as I like what I have seen of Fairey's works prior to this cover - mmmm Smashing Pumpkins cover - not so much. I apreciate the statement he's trying to make - but I don't feel he needed to explain it in such full detail - I am such a big believer in letting the audience - listening or otherwise - to make up their own minds over the contribution - that's one of the beautiful things about the artistic world. I take so many pics of graffiti in my travels ... it's almost scary. What I think is art - someone else is going to turn around and tell me all the reasons they think it _isn't_ art. I think this cover is +most certainly art+ - but something about it just rubs me the wrong way, it is growing on me the more I look at it though - I'm thinking there is a pretty good chance that part of these underwhelming feelings speaks to my lack of positivity for the new album. Let me also say - that I've always found Billy C. to be a pompous goon who thinks _way too highly_ of himself - he was a douche-nugget when I saw him live ... really pissy & tempramental. & did any of you read the crap he bound together & called poetry ?? I know three year olds who could write cicles around that shit ! & again - this is totally my opinion - if you dug his poetry - je suis desoler - if you don't know what that means - it translates roughly to go F yerself (kidding - it means I'm sorry). But I can put on either of the albums mentioned above along with SD or PI & sit back n' enjoy. (especially Gish). That album hits me on such a visceral level. LOVE the angry 90s rock, so many amazingly good albums/bands came from such anger & frustration with the world. Even if he never beat us over the head with his thoughts on the political agenda - don't think for a second that each of those albums didn't have relevant things to say about the political climate ... without being overtly so - sometimes that's a better way to go. Year Zero - there's no mincing words with Trent - but he pulls it off brilliantly on that album (pretty soon, I'm gonna start just using the initials IMO) - my Momma always taught me to say in my opinion after EVERY stinking opinion - I always thought it got old really quick & was _obviously the case_ - otherwise _I wouldn't say it_ - but now I do see her point. I don't want anyone here to think I'm shooting his/her thoughts & feelings down or invalidating what they've said, I am just on such a teeter-toter with the WC - aparently he's matured so let's all call him Wills (or William if you want to be really formal), that nothing is sitting right for me - except that is - for Gish, MC7tIS, SD & PI :) After all that - I am inclined to state - I dig the post Kevin - I had kind of forgotten about this album coming out - must have blocked it out of my memory banks - too painful :) Not only did it make me realize the OBEY stickers & FNO cover & WtL poster etc are all from the same guy, one that I find very talented - it also reminded me of the importance of allowing everyone the freedom to talk about how things make them feel without being beaten/killed etc for doing so (again, _in my opinion_) dag, I am one opinionated lady ;) Here's me - here's my soapbox - I'm putting it away now :)

  22. Augusts1 says Sheesh Lizzie, I don't think you said quite enough there, hehe! Btw, the last SP cd I bought was called "Machina/The Machines Of God".
    Permalink posted 05/26/2007
  23. Augusts1 says p.s. There was also "Machina II" that was an internet only free download. You can download it "here":http://www.thepumpkins.net/music/music_-_machina_ii.html if you don't have it yet, which I didn't, so listening to it now, pretty damn good. So far it sounds better than the released cd. Surprised it's still available really. I didn't have a puter at home back when it was released on the net in '00 or '01. When I did a search to find out the title of their last album I found the download site. I'd forgotten about it till now. So thanks Kev & Lizzie for helping to lead me to it!

  24. Lizziegreeneyes says August - anytime darlin - you should know by now - the English major in me tends toward the verbose. Feel free to tune me out anytime & page down ... hey wait ... where are you going ?? The FNM cover - not the same guy ... has a similar feel to some of his other works. Where am I getting Ava Adore then ...
    Permalink posted 05/26/2007
  25. Augusts1 says They do have an album called "Adore" & a song on it called "Ava Adore" which came out in'98 so it was the previous cd to "Machina/The Machines Of God". So you had the right idea, just not the right album, heh. C'est la vie! Lol at "Feel free to tune me out anytime & page down … hey wait … where are you going ??" good one! I really did laugh out loud!
