Get your Ramones gear at the Gap?

Posted over 2 years ago
Converse will be putting out a Ramones inspired Chuck Taylor All Star sneaker later this summer in collaboration with The Gap's (Product) Red line, which helps raise funds to fight AIDS in Africa. According to a press release. Chuck Talyor's were worn by the members of the Ramones, and the shoes became a staple in punk culture. Designed to symbolize the way the band wore their Chuck Taylor shoes, they feature distressed canvas and rubber creating the iconic worn-in look that’s a Ramones signature. The shoe’s upper is in familiar canvas material, yet with intentional imperfections and wear-marks to give it a distinct character. Grey with a traditional white sole, the shoe features the iconic Chuck Taylor All Star patch on the shoe’s inside upper and an additional Ramones patch that reads “Hey ho, let’s go” on its outer, referencing the classic Ramones song “Blitzkrieg Bop.” I would like to have asked the Ramones when they started their career if they thought they would be selling shoes at a store like the gap some 30 years later. Either way, here is a picture of the shoe, now go show the world how punk you are by visiting your local Gap.

  4. summer eyes says i must say, i like the whole red line at gap. if you are going to pay that much for a tee shirt from the gap, its comforting to know that a portion of it is going to help out people in africa in some small way. i have two red tees, they say inspi(red) and bo(red). :]

  6. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says Someone said "GO AHEAD" and they went! If this will help people in Africa then I will not object. Speaking of Africa.............talk about a continent that's being let down again and again and again and again.

  7. Rawkkiddoh says Dale so true, you would think this would be the kind of thing they would be against. Although it is going to a good cause, but it always makes me wonder just how much a company like the Gap is really giving. Summer, I cant say I have been into a Gap in years. Last time I went was because I got a gift card and I found out pretty quick that their clothes were not meant for my body type Jox, just wait till you see the yuppie hipster mom walking down the street with a pair on. Thats when you can bust out your quiz, but expect every answer to be something like this.........Uhmm, I am not sure....is it I wanna be sedated? Henry, I know what you mean. For years I have been seeing all this media coverage of how companies in the states are trying to do what they can to save Africa, yet year after year you dont see much of a change. Makes you wonder where the money is going

  8. Lizziegreeneyes says Right on Jox !!! I think the Red line is a great way to educate the masses ... but something about this Chuck Taylor/Ramones/GapRed just doesn't sit right with me. I still have the pair my best friend in high school gave to me when she got a new pair ... DK, The Smiths, Danzig, Skinny Puppy, NIN, The Cure, Joy Division, The Ramones, The Clash - dang, can't think of more - but they're all faded & on there ... only break those out for really special occasions. Kinda like Dale's concert Docs :) Hey Dale, was I correct in reading you're MOGGER of the WEEK ??? That was you right ??? _Just checking_ ;) Seriously awesome Dale !!!

  12. 1234chainsaw says I like totally wanna go and buy a pair of these special Chucks since I'm told Ramones are so kewl. They'll go well with that Ramones T-shirt I bought at the Old Navy. I wanna buy them at that The Gap on Haight in San Francisco which for some reason is always empty. I wonder why.

  13. Rawkkiddoh says Moovy, I would but the pee wee herman ones, not to sure about the back to the future shoes, they look a little too much like moon boots. Pekka, OMG I know, no one is ever there, it makes me ROTF while LMAO

  14. contrabandwidth says I love manufactured uniqueness. Reminds me of when I was in New York and the Levi's store had these cool ass MC5 shirts, and I was perplexed. They were meant as an accessory, but I fuckin loved the MC5. I would have fallen in love with a girl that wore a shirt like that, but then been crushed when she said "I don't know, I got it at the Levi's store." This is one of those easy pop references to make without having to invest any time in learning anything about the band. Just shows how starved for something original/unique todays culture is.

  15. Lady Miss Ian says Gappa Gappa Hey! Oh, I pity the fool that wears those into a club. The Ramones T-shirt is a different story. It's a classic. But Chucks? It's the Hot Topic syndrome again -- people to lazy to make their own punk clothing are not punks. (Lady Miss harrumphs).

  21. fairportfan says I doubt that abyone would dare to criticise me if i walked into a club in a pair. And i was into the Ramones probably before some of you folks were born... (if you're under thirty, i was...) I like the idea of medical aid to Africa, and, let's face it, this is a lot less disgusting than AT&T using the opening from *Blitzkrieg Bop* to sell cell phones, or the *Shrek 3* trailer using the intro from *Rock'n'Roll Radio*... (Do0es anyone know if it was an actual Ramones track in the phone commercials? It sounded like it might be.)

  22. Lizziegreeneyes says I really don't want to upset anyone here ... but the whole idea of the punk movement was to separate themselves & "do wot they wonted, screw the _norm_ " ... only flaw with that philosophy, as soon as someone else does it, it's not _original_ ... I LOVE punk music ... but that flaw in the system ruined the look for me ... I'll always love seeing a fauxhawk - if only for the fact that I could do it with my hair & still have most of it on my head the following morning - I could *never* commit to a mohawk !!! I had loads of friend into the goth look ... um _*HELLO*_ 1234chainsaw ... thanks, I just snarfed yet again ... this poor computer is getting to be such a mess ... Chul & MatHIRio ... G Love gotz the sauce too ... well that's not entirely true ... it's his baby got sauce ... & he wasn't singin bout no Coca-Cola neither ;)

  23. Slicing says oh dear god! i doubt this is the way the ramones would've liked their names used. i mean, any gimmick that makes people conscious of others is great, and giving to the less fortunate is great, but when i know that there's probably a good chance that less than 30% of that money is actually going to the people who need it that makes me a iritated with the gimmicks and the companies that think up such bullshit.
    Permalink posted 05/21/2007
  24. Lizziegreeneyes says yeah, that's a great point Slicing ... If someone is really wanting to help out ... maybe they should take 100% of the money they'd pay on a pair of fake-phunked chucks & just give it to RED (or any other charity that they wish to aid) !!! This was/is my biggest peeve re: The Red Cross - after 9/11 with all the money directed elsewhere ... too upsetting, I sent trashbags filled with all sorts of clothes, sheets, towels, bathroom supplies etc. after Katrina hit - & I gave it to a person who was going down there ... no middleman company. Then we have people like J Lo donating $5000 ... could she _*be*_ more generous ... me no like her !!!! 10 mil wouldn't even dent her cashflow ... Maybe Angelina & Brad could take my check with them the next time they globe trot ;) Ya think ???

  27. Augusts1 says So not into punk stuff at all. Could care less if Ramones are selling their souls to The Gap. I'm so not a punk & never was but I wouldn't buy those shoes. And for the record, The Gap is one of my fav clothing stores, my wardrobe is full of their clothes, seriously. Just from a design perspective, their clothes are simple yet cool. I like their clothing far more than shit from Abernumby & Fitch, American Eagle or Old Navy. The donating part is cool though but I'd have to agree, how much of it _really_ goes to the poor in Africa. It's more of a marketing ploy than anything to make people think The Gap really cares.

  29. Rawkkiddoh says Man leave to make dinner and you miss the whole discussion. Let me retort...... Ladymiss, I agree when I saw this I thought of Hot topic right away. The Gap's sales are hurting and they are trying what ever they can to get back in with mainstream culture. Chul, I hear your pain, my brother just emailed me from London and he spent the day in sticker shock. I see the same thing when I head over to canada, chucks there are around 40 bucks. Henry - chul has some good advice but make sure to check for the pickles. They always leave me hurting Oceanrain - I had to learn about trainers from my wife. In canada they are hip to all the european lingo, and now thats what I call my running shoes Fairport - i think its all pretty disgusting yet it works. My ears will perk up when I hear music playing over a commercial, but in no way would it influence me to buy the product. If its a band I have never heard, I will go an seek out their cd, I have fallen prey to the itunes commercials more than once. Lizzie - Its the truth, and early punkers did their best to seperate themselves from the norm. Problem is today once a kid comes out with a look that is cool, the masses follow. While you dont see as many "punk" kids as in the past, I think high schools have a far disturbing problem and that is the American Eagle look. Everytime I head to the mall, its like a J Crew Ad gone bad. Slicing - I hear ya, and I would kill to see the books on exactly how much the Gap actually contributes to the problems in Africa. Lizzie - I have been saying the same thing for years about the all mighty Oprah. People make this big deal about her donations and such, but arent they just tax write offs. I mean, she is filthy rich and I dont know how someone with that much money can sleep at night. tmosupremo - Ouch, those stung a little. Vans have been doing skate band shoes for years, but iron maiden, well dont think I would buy a pair Michelle - I could post a video of ALF August - I never can find anything that fits. I feel their clothes are made for skinny people, and I have , and I quote an ex-girfriend, a bubble butt. In no way am I fat, but I do have muscles that are hard to fit into their jeans Soul - I go back to Jox's comment and that being they are made to look like the old converse that punks used to wear. I mean, if you want the real deal go buy a pair of chucks and wear them till they look like that. Then, take a safety pin and attatch your own Ramones patch

  30. I am says Okay, now I am pissed. Sorry Kev, hopefully your kids don't see this! When will the quest for the almighty dollar allow for the rerelease of this piece of true "classic" punk fashion? Sorry to burst your bubble folks, but looking like a punk, has nothing to do with being punk. For God's sake, the grass hasn't even grown on Johnny's grave. Come on, any discussion other than "How repulsive this really is." is moot.

  31. darmuzz says I always associate the Ramones with wearing their classic American Keds. I bought my daughter Chuck Taylors a few months ago for $59.99 Cdn. Could have bought fair trade high-tops for about $79.99...if one didn't care about the brand name.

  32. doombilly says Sorry to also burst your bubble. Da Bruddas, especially Joey ALWAYS wanted their music to be used in commercials. He often name-dropped things like Burger King etc... in hopes of getting a jingle deal.

  33. doombilly says "... Cannon and `Palisades Park' on `Oh Oh I Love Her So' with its opening couplet: "I met her at the Burger King/We fell in love by the soda machine"; the paean to departed youth, ..."
"... Ramones songs used in movies and commercials," explains Janis Schacht. "That's why he kept throwing in references to places like Burger King. ..."

  34. brendanhalpin says Well, I think the shoes are cool. I don't think there is any such thing as punk rock authenticity anymore, as if there ever was. I think the picture of Sid Vicious above is kinda ironic given that the Sex Pistols were (at least partly) a marketing creation designed to sell records. Why was Sid in the band? Not because he could play bass, but because his image helped get butts into seats. Converse is owned by Nike. The Ramones were distributed by Warner Brothers. They kept the same sound and uniform for all those years not because of authenticity: Dee Dee wanted to dress like Johnny Thunders at one point, and look what he did when he left the band. (If you don't own a copy of Dee Dee King's Standing in the Spotlight, you really should). They had a marketing concept, and they stuck with it. (This in no way undermines the brilliance of their work, but they weren't making some philosophical statement with the jeans and chucks and jackets--it was a gimmick.) I think the shoes look cool as hell, and I don't really care where I get my Ramones merch. I don't even care about the charity part--I'd be just as happy if it means that Tommy and Marky get to enjoy a comfortable retirement. And if I could, I'd slide Richie some of that t-shirt money too. He deserves it.

  35. I am says doom and brendan I know your right. I guess I just had a knee jerk reaction to big retail once again co-opting my heroes. When I was younger I bought into the Punk movement just because it wasn’t mainstream and I didn’t want to be an FFM. Maybe I should just get over the fact that Punk rock and the style that goes with it is more mainstream than ever. Just like the music. Truth be known, I shouldn’t complain. I have no say in what The Ramones, past and present and surviving family members do with their property. It’s theirs and they can do what they want with it. That is the pragmatic Libertarian talking. I will just voice my silent protest by not purchasing these sneaks. I do have one question: How much of every dollar earned on such items actually gets back to the artist who created the style, artwork, or music?
