WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

I loved you once

Posted over 2 years ago
There are many albums that are perfect to play at certain occasions. Sometimes, an album can only be special once. It’s that moment when the environment you are in and the music that is playing seem to blend together perfectly, and you can never listen to that album the same way again. Case in point was the time I was visiting my wife's sister in Ottawa. It was the last night my wife and I were to be staying in Ottawa, and we decided to go to an incredible eatery called the Black Tomato. You can check it out here, http://www.theblacktomato.com/ , if you are ever in Ottawa; it’s a must that you dine there at least once. Inside the Black Tomato is a CD store, an extension of the former independent record store mainstay Shake Records. Before you eat, you can browse through their collection and purchase music if your heart desires. Not sure if you are going to like the music, get a glass of wine and head over to the listening station. I made it a habit of ordering my food, then listening to a few cds I had chosen before hand. The food is something else as well; I have never had a bad dish served to me in my many visits to Ottawa. This one night I noticed the music seemed to flow with our conversation. I would say it was like out of a movie, as if someone was watching us in the restaurant, and choosing the perfect music to play during each moment of our stay. We sit down.... bam..... wine..... bam..... hors d'oeuvre.........perfect, and it was like this the whole night. When our waiter was bringing the check over, I had to ask what was playing. I knew it was Feist but they were remixes that I had not ever heard before. He informed me it was a remix album of Open Season, and if I wanted I could buy it from the restaurant. I was overjoyed, the whole night the music made everything that much sweeter, and I thought to my self this is going to be one I listen to all the time. We left, and the next morning caught our plane back to Minnesota. A few days later, I put the cd on, and something did not seem right, I was almost afraid the waiter had sold me the wrong cd. It was the same music, but the feeling was not there as it had been a few days before. I realized then that one album could have only been listened to that one particular time. I have tried to duplicate the feeling since then, playing it when making dinner for my wife, or when we are driving to get a bite to eat. It doesn’t sound the same as that one time, and I don’t think it ever will. While I still love the album, it’s a record that doesn’t get played as much as I thought it would. I find myself listening to the regular version of Open Season a lot more, and every so often I will bring this one out in hopes to get a taste of the feeling I did that night.

  1. Anna says They sell CDs in restaurants? Hm...I don't think I have an album like that. I will ponder this and return.

  3. Anna says Ah, so it's not a standard thing, OK. I just visited the website, this is a very interesting concept (aside the fact that they have Bjork playing, that would kill my apettite). And I like the restaurant's name. W00t! (yes, woot!)

  4. Rawkkiddoh says Feel the same way about bee-jork. Never heard her playing while eating, but you can make requests to listen to albums while eating. Uhm.....woot woot?

  6. chucky says That song sounds like it was written expressly to be background music to an enjoyable evening (but not as a means of enjoyment in itself).

  11. soulrocket says I know exactly what you mean, kkiddo. some music has an specific moment in your life & then you must let it go. I like to listen to a band for at least 6 months before I decide to purchase the album.

  13. Cody B says Damn that food looks good. I totally know what you're saying about the context in which you hear a song. It particularly applies to music you hear in a club, I think. You can never, at least at my house, replicate the atmosphere and volume of the club.
