WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

I didn't want to see you anyways

This morning I woke up to read a post by Pekka regarding the experience of a canceled show. You can read it here, http://mog.com/1234chainsaw/blog_post. Anyone who is into concerts most likely has had this happen to them a few times in their life. Nothing is worse than the anticipation of seeing a band you love only to reach the front doors and have the ticket taker say, "Sorry show canceled." Sometimes this experience can hurt a little, and leave a bad taste in your mouth to boot. While a little voice in your brain tells you not to worry, they will be back again some time. The other part of your brain feels like this was your final shot of seeing this band, and now you will never see them again. Pekka's post made me think back to a few years ago when I was supposed to see Mason Jennings play with Frank Black in Moorhead, Minnesota. It was a Friday show, and was not supposed to start until 7 at night. My wife, then girlfriend really liked Mason Jennings, and she was also visiting from Canada at the time. I knew that it would be tight, Moorhead is a 3 hour drive from Minneapolis on a good day, and my teaching day ended at 3:30. I said screw it, got the tickets ahead of time and shared them with Steph when she came in on her flight. On the day of the show, school seemed like it would never end, I felt like a kid in his bed on Christmas waiting for morning to arrive. Finally at 3:30 all the kids were gone and I drove home to get the things we needed and we were off. About 15 minutes outside the city limits is when we hit the fog. I have never seen fog so think in my entire life, and can only think to compare it to the type of fog they get in San Francisco. Visibility had to be about 10 feet, and every rational thought in my head said to slow down. I knew time was limited and I drove on, summoning the force to guide my way. Three hours of driving blindly through a cloudy haze, I might as well have closed my eyes. We finally saw our exit, and realized we had 10 minutes to spare. I found the venue quickly, and we ran to the front doors hoping not to miss any of Jennings act. As we got to the entrance, we saw the sign, "Show Canceled" and it was as if our hearts had been ripped out. Apparently, the two acts decided it would be safer to cancel the show, and stay in the Twin Cities, rather than risk a 3 hour drive for a show. Trying to laugh off the irony we made our way to Fargo, just to say we had been there, and found a hotel to spend the night. On the drive back to Minneapolis the next day we listened to Mason Jennings and talked about what a great show it would have been. Eventually I was able to take Steph to a Mason Jennings show, so all was not lost. I still remember that night like it was yesterday, and if you are ever in Fargo don't ever order the nachos.

  1. Dale says Ouch, that's brutal! Driving through snow like that, only to find out that the band didn't bother to make the trek. So, what's up with the nachos in Fargo?

  2. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says I'm with Dale on this one. What's up with the nachos?

  3. teejaleo says You know I had never heard of Mason Jennings until you posted one of his songs on a different post of mine, but he is great. This was actually one of the songs I downloaded when I went thru to get some of his music.

  4. Lilithk says I've never had a band cancel on me thankfully. But I did get tickets to see Primus once and at the last minute my friend who was also my ride to the show cancelled on me. And I couldn't get another ride. I was very sad.

  5. mktackabery says oww, pain. It is hard, but you know, bands have lives too. . . I try to remember that when I'm disappointed, but it's so hard.

  6. mickimicki says Pain, pain.... this reminds me that the FIRST EVER concert I had a ticket for was cancelled... a (horrible, of course) German teenie pop band called The Teens... I was about 10 or 11 years old and I went to the venue on my own, by tram (or do you call them streetcar?), only to find the note (the gig was in the afternoon because of the young age of the fans). In the evening, my mom finally had the time to read the morning paper where the cancellation had been announced, the singer kinda lost his voice due to the flu or something. I was so pissed that I immediately stopped being a fan, and went on to listen to real music.

  7. Rawkkiddoh says Great story micki, its funny how every country has their own teen bop sensation. Oh and the nachos in Fargo had to be the worst ever. Plain tortillas with melted velveta over the top. It was not even completely melted, you could still see chunks of the block they put on it. The bar we went to seemed to be a frat hangout, and judging how drunk everyone was, I am sure it tasted like butter to them.

  8. summer eyes says i guess im fortunate never to have been going to a show that has been cancelled, but i have been to a show thats been shut down. it wasnt anyone big (i cant even remember the bands names), nor was it even a genre of music i prefer to listen to. i was at a hardcore show with some friends and the police shut it down... before most of the bands had even gotten to play. but my friend was really pissed because her favorite band didnt get to play. and i was pissed because a) i had to spend $7 to see music i really didnt like, then didnt even get to hear it and b) my friend was in a horrible mood until she got to see them like 2 weeks later. life is unfortunate sometimes.

  9. Pseudo Cyborg says WOW! That's horrible! I've had shows relocated (see my recent post), but never cancelled. Now I'm looking for some wood to knock on....

  10. amber says I'm with Lilith--never had a show cancel on me but had to miss one I held tickets to because of someone else. That's almost worse because you don't get your money back and its your own damn fault (or someone close to you). but at least you can still love the band. And I too am knocking on wood right now...

  11. summer eyes says ahh. perhaps i should also knock on wood, seeing as i am going to 3 concerts in may. and my car broke down on the way to the decemberists concert once, luckily a friends grandma was able to bring us one....

  12. jameson says My cousin dragged me to a Life of Agony show once, probably 1996 or so. I was not even remotely a fan of the genre, but whatever.....there was a bottle of Absolute involved so I said "Fuck it!". We (3 of us) drank 2/3's of the bottle in the car, and strolled up to the venue and..... "Show Cancelled Due To Health Problems" . He was pissed. I wasn't. One thing we all were: extremely drunk. Not in ANY condition to drive......we sought out another show and ended up seeing Tripping Daisy at Club Babyhead instead. More my style of music.... had a great time, rolled with the punches, and saw a decent replacement show.

  13. QueenofHell says Amy Winehouse postponed her London gigs last month and rescheduled for this month. I was sooooooo excited. I didn't have to travel far at all; I live in London. But I had got all dolled up, and was looking forward to a great night. It transpires she 'knocked her front teeth out' and had been booked for Letterman a few days later. I wonder what happened there, really. I am still excited for the gig, but feel a certain amount of disappointment. This was the second time she'd postponed it. C'est la vie. At least I didn't drive for three hours through fog and then have to find a hotel. I went out for an overpriced and substandard meal in London instead, and my munificent boyfriend footed the bill. That's the only cancellation I can recall, so I should count myself lucky. Two cancellations for Pekka in one week. Bad luck, although, personally, I wouldn't have been saddened by missing out on The Fratellis or Placebo, because I think they're mediocre.

  14. Augusts1 says Fog is really scary to drive in, what a major drag to have to do it for 3 hrs, Trip. We get fog out here alot even in the summer, so I'm kinda used to it but still no fun when it's thick like that! I've not heard of this guy either, he sounds good. Frank Black, of course is always awesome. Got to see him w/Pixies back in '93. I've not had a cancellation for a show that I can recall so I've been fortunate. At least you were w/Steph when you found out about it. I'm sure you had fun making up for the cancellation after you found out, hehehe!

  15. chucky says I'm having an intense deja vu moment - am I crazy or have I heard this story before? Either way, that still sucks.

  16. Rawkkiddoh says Summer, it would be a good idea to knock on something soon. Three shows, thats three times the chance of it happening. Pseudo Cyborg when it does, you will feel the pain amber missing a show because of a friend? Are you still friends now? Jameson, you cant go wrong with Tripping Daisy, loved those guys QueenofHell I would take a canceled show if I lived in London, you are too lucky August, I wish it had a storybook ending like that. The hotel was straight out of a porn movie, and we got creeped out just staying in the room. Came with the vibrating option on the bed as well. After the long night of driving and sweet food it was sleep and leave early the next morning. Ash, I think I talked about that story on someone elses post before. I even went through all 70 pages of my own to make sure I did not re-post the story

  17. Mike the Knife says As Bill Clinton would say, I'm feeling everyone's pain. Got my own miseries, but that doesn't mean I don't care about yours...

  18. Lizziegreeneyes says It's a cruel joke to have to miss a show ... no matter the reason. I missed most of The Frames last week ... nearly killed me - but when an emergency arises - I will sadly leave the show to help out a friend - she would have done the same for me. I can also say with great certainty - do NOT order a Philly cheesesteak in Texas ... trust me ... it's not going to be what you think it is (that is, if you've ever had a true Philly cheesesteak). If you haven't had a traditional cheesesteak, then by all means - order away in the lone star state ...

  20. Lizziegreeneyes says I once ordered mozz sticks (can't remember where) and they brought it out with salsa for the dipping sauce ... da heck is up wit dat yo ???
    Permalink posted 05/01/2007
  21. Rawkkiddoh says almost as good as when I stopped in at an arby's to get some mozz sticks and the lady asked me if I wanted some "mare-in-nay-der" sauce with them. I almost lost it laughing
