Partnership Offsets Costs of Video by Fall Out Boy

Posted over 2 years ago
I have been waiting for MOG to be back up and running to get your opinions on this matter. Nothing has angered me more in the last 10 years than the commercials you are forced to sit through before a movie. I go to a movie to enjoy a picture, not be bombarded by companies trying to sell me something. It seems as if this type of product placement might just make its way into music videos. The following article was taken from the New York Times in the technology section.Fans of Fall Out Boy who downloaded “Thnks Fr Th Mmrs,” the rock band’s new video last weekend most likely enjoyed the spectacle of chimpanzees playing filmmakers and mocking the members of the band. But they may have noticed something else: Tag All Nighter, a deodorant body spray aimed at young men, is featured prominently in the video.Procter & Gamble, which owns Tag, made a deal with the band’s label, Island Records, to make the video available for free downloading from the band’s Web site before it could be seen anywhere else.Since CD sales are declining but the cost of making a video is not, many musicians have made product placement deals for videos in the last few years. In this deal, Tag essentially underwrote the cost of those downloads for a limited time and put a message to that effect on the band’s Web site. Tag also promoted the band in advertising and helped offset the cost of making the video.“It used to be that you’d make a video and you’d get a certain number of plays on MTV, but things changed,” said Steve Bartels, president of Island Records. The deal with Tag offered another way to reach viewers, and the label said that video was downloaded more than 100,000 times. At a time when music labels are trying to reduce their promotional costs, deals like this could become more common. “If it offset the cost of the video it sounds like a great idea,” said Scott Booker, who manages the alternative rock band the Flaming Lips. He said that younger fans were less likely to perceive such deals as “selling out.”In this case, Fall Out Boy was comfortable with Tag because the brand’s ads have a “sarcastic spin,” said Pete Wentz, the band’s bassist and lyricist. “Given how the industry is right now, you have to come up with new kinds of partnerships, and when you’re able to offset the cost of the video, that’s cool. Hiring chimps is not cheap.”I do not know if it's me, but this is not something that I need to see in music videos. In addition to Tag, you also see a few of the other products this band is endorsing during the video. While the sales of records may be slipping, bands are figuring out ways of cashing in when they can.Fall Out Boy - "Thnks Fr Th Mmrs"

  2. Dale says No, Pete Wentz, Tag's ads don't have a sarcastic spin, they have a completely oversexed spin. The more I know about Pete, the more I think he's a massive tool.

  11. Jonh Ingham says Forget the ads before a movie, you've been watching product placement in movies for years. What's so different about a music video? Especially if - for full artistic expression of your amazing sounds in images - you use a big Hollywood sound stage and all those union-scale chimps......

  13. tekla says Let us pause at this most wonder rock and roll moment --- "Hiring chimps is not cheap." Well, ain't it the truth? You can get all the free strings you want with an endorsement deal (or colone, I guess) but your paying for the monkees. How perfect is that?

  14. theyouthcard says This is complete madness!!! And how come its always Pete who scores the hot ladies in the videos?? In my days of being a bassist in a band the "Band Hierarchy" clearly stated that Lead singers/guitarists/drummers get to kiss the lovely ladies before the bassist!! ahhhhh simpler times!!!! But hey! If Patrick Stump dont mind......or Maybe "stump" is not so much a surname as a nickname!!!! "OH NO HE DIDN"T!!!"

  15. Alexbass says Trust Fall Out Boy to stoop so low as to put blantant product placement in their music video... Their music is so uninspiring and mundane, now they have made their videos just like their music. I don't like FOB and now have even more reason to dislike them. Why don't they just put free samples of deodorant in their album sleeves?! It wouldn't surprise me, seriously. Bad work by a bad band.

  16. SamTheButcher says I hate to rain on your...rain parade?, but you *do* know what music videos are, right? They're...product placement. Placing a song in a short film or performance film to get you to buy the song! The ultimate, though, is Neil Young's "This Note's For You" vid, which is a rail against product placement & endorsement. I can't see (nor is it stated above) if that's one of the vids RGM posted. What about the rap videos with the Cristal or whatever. What if Cristal gave Rapper X 20 cases of their product? It's still placement. What about bands that have stuff like "Drummer X uses Zildjan cymbals, Lecter heads and PickUp sticks" in the liner notes? Do they get your wrath as well? It's just funny to see people get all riled about Fall Out Boy. Sure, I like their music, but I'll save the vitriol for something that...erm...matters. :)

  17. j anne photography says mmkay. this matter wouldn't bother me so much if it wasn't fall out boy talking about how they got the video paid for, so they could use tons of MONKEES. that's just taking it a step too far, plus there's only about 2 short scenes where it's actually funny. yeah. good job procter and gamble. you just made a lot of money off some 13 year old boy who thinks if he wears that stinky tag stuff that he'll get a girl like pete wentz. um yeah. maybe if he's in a band that plays crappy music and then sprays that stuff...

  18. Rawkkiddoh says To address a few things here. The product placement is something I am well aware that I see on a daily basis. Even in videos its there, but not as blatant as it was in this video. Sam, the reason I posted the video was so people could see what I am talking about. I do not hate Fall Out Boy, in fact I like a lot of their music. I am wondering if this is what artists are going to have to go to in order to make sure they get the check that they want. For years cigarette companies caught shit for targeting the youth, and it seems the rest of big business is catching on. I do not know how addictive Tag body spray is, but it is just as harmful if you ask me. Why, well when you get some stinky 13 year old who uses Tag rather than take a shower then we all lose.

  20. Cody B says I agree with Sam the Butcher. I hate commercials. It was always a trade off with MTV when it started;you got to see, maybe for the first time, bands you liked, but then the videos started to be more important than the music (see hair metal and 80's keyboard pop). Now, the innocence and MTV videos are gone. In the post, post, post modern world if you make an expensive video you almost have to get product placement to make it cost effective. The sad thing to me (even though there our plenty of wonderful videos) is that folks demand them. They want commercials! Advertising and marketing is so imbedded in peoples skulls that they demand it, rate it, talk about it. To me, it detracts from the music, trying to trade on whatever cache of specialness music has left, to sell (insert product here). It seems like a lot of creative and intelligent folks are putting a lot of their energy into getting people to buy stuff and they will use any means necessary, including things that were once off limits, like pop music. But we're asking for it, so we are gonna get it.

  21. ponchoandy says I, too, think Sam the Butcher hits this particular thread's nail on the head. Corporate sponsorship of music is old, old news, and I didn't find the Fall Out Boy video particularly offensive. If you didn't know that TAG had paid to be in there, would you have even noticed? Did you notice the Nokia and Chevy Tahoe product placements in there, too? Did they help bankroll the video, too? Whether they did or not, who cares? Should bands omit all corporate logos from their videos in order to remain "pure"? A lot of my favorite artists form alliances with corporate sponsors now, and you know what? If it helps them to get paid, then more power to them. I'm confident enough in my own abilities to resist being brainwashed that I don't think I will rush out and buy Nike shoes because LCD Soundsystem did an iTunes mix for them, or buy my next polo shirt from American Eagle because they financed Sia's last music video.

  23. that1guy says I agree with panchoandy, I think artists should pimp themselves out for the almighty dollar. What else is music about anyway? Big up to proctor and gamble too! I love that company, especially the whole part about them STILL testing on animals.

  25. ponchoandy says Haha, that1guy. I'm just saying, if you only wanna listen to bands that still have day jobs, knock yourself out. But the reality is that the traditional music industry can't support its own acts anymore. They don't sell enough records. So more and more bands are sucking off the corporate teat in one way or another. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, I'm just saying I don't let it affect my choices on which music I listen to. And I don't pass judgment on bands that decide to go that route. Being poor is not a prerequisite for making good music. And in Fall Out Boy's case, all the indignity I'm reading here is clearly misplaced. Their tour is called the Honda Civic Tour, for god's sake. They're corporate sponsored to the hilt. It's like getting upset that NASCAR puts Penzoil logos on their stock cars.

LOL Won't SOMEBODY think of the children??!? :D Well, Kev, coming as you do from the punk background, I can see the anti-corporate stance. There was a time when it was taboo. Hell, Green Day was banished from Gilman for signing with Warners. Now that seems stupid. Except probably to the trust fund kids who can afford to take that stance. :) This post brought to you by Tide with Downy: Tide knows fabrics best!

  29. Rawkkiddoh says Sam, I think its a fine line, and its funny that companies are trying to figure out how to not make a band look like its selling out. Reminds me of a song by NOFX, its called the Marxist Brothers. We meet in underground parking lots And late night in coffee shops With voices low unless we’re drunk We've got hats and cop sunglasses We question all that is wrong We discuss conspiracy Are we enemies of the state? Or idealist bourgeoisie? I’ll get this one, put it on my card I get frequent flyer mileage And a booklet of upgrades So next time I visit the third world I won’t have to fly second class The people's revolution is gonna be a podcast We took the bus to the anarchist book fair I left the hybrid at home I scored an extremely rare signed copy of the communist manifesto We protested the G8, got maced by female police In hot black uniforms and boots I got one’s e-mail address Still I’m waiting to see if my bid on eBay was enough To get "Today’s Empires Are Tomorrow’s Ashes" on soviet red vinyl It’s going on the wall next to "Tubthumper" and "The Battle Of Los Angeles" Of Los Angeles RGM, the supersuckers know how to put out a rock and roll album!

  32. brand X says I thought about weighing in on this yesterday with my old standby line about production costs for videos being footed by the bands and not the labels, but I just couldn't find it in me to care enough to put in even that little effort. Looking through the comments today I realized why: I don't watch music videos, never have. Yeah, I click on the occasional youtube embed, but that's about as far as it goes for me. A friend once told me that she though System of a Down sucked because the video for Chop Suey! sucked. As someone who doesn't watch videos, the whole concept was rather foreign to me. Ultimately I told her that videos are made for people who watch videos, the kind of people who are content to watch MTV fill up nearly 50% of an hour with commercials. It is to be expected, then, that a video would pander to that sort of individual. What I'm driving at, I guess, is that I really don't care what Fall Out Boy puts in their video, I merely concern myself with what they put on their album. Now, if bands start being paid to feature Samsonite Brand metal folding chairs in their lyrics, then we're gonna start having a problem...
    Permalink posted 04/06/2007
  33. SamTheButcher says Wow...I totally forgot about that, brand x. Video costs are normally paid for by the record company and the cost is recoupable from record sales. So if FOB makes a $30k video, they've got to sell $30k worth of records before they start seeing any profit from the record. Which is oversimplifying it because there's advertising costs paid for by the record company as well, which is recoupable.... So by subsidising the cost with product placement, they're assuring that the record company keeps less money from FOB's record sales. Pretty shrewd, actually.... :)
