OMG

Not trying to be rude

Posted over 2 years ago
As the tag line indicates ahead of time, sorry if I step on any toes. I have been on mog for almost 6 months now, and I have grown to love this site. It's a release to come on, and see other peoples take on what is going on in music. One of my favorite features of MOG used to be the section of the home page, Heard In The Mog-o-sphere. I would check it daily to find interesting posts, and maybe find a post that would not make it into the top ten in the mogosphere. I find there are a lot of posts that people miss just because of the sheer amount of mogging that goes on. As of late, it seems that section of the home page has been dominated with strictly music related news. By strictly music related news, I mean that its almost like a news column that you would find on sites such as billboard.com or topix.net. While these posts are great to read, part of the reason I have liked mog so much is seeing how people encorporate music into their daily lives. To me finding out about a posted tour is as important as finding lyrics writen about your home town. While I know browsing through the mogosphere I could find all these posts, I would just like to see some of these posted on the MOG home page. I think its what sets MOG apart from other music related sites on the net, and it was one of the things that first drew me into this crazy little world.

  3. greeninkstains says I love the Heard in the Mog-O-Sphere widget. It was always my first stop when I didn't have to login every time that I mogged. Now, Mog brings me to my Mog page and from there I sift through the Mog-O-Sphere. Bring back Heard in the MOS.

  4. Rawkkiddoh says Green you can still get to it, at the very bottom of the page you can click on home. I would just like to see more variety posted there, like when I first started mogging 6 months ago

  6. 1234chainsaw says You can also get to the "Heard In . . ." section by clicking the big 'MOG' at the top. that section of the home page has been dominated with strictly music related news My sentiment exactly! What I mostly see there these days are news that I get to my RSS feed reader from various music sites anyway. It's become largely useless to me. Thanks, Kev..

  8. Librarianguish says I just checked it, and only two people make up the four very "newsy" posts. I'm much more likely to read something that's not like a news article - besides, I've noticed that some of these are just quoting articles from other sites.

  9. Kate says These are all useful comments. The front page will be very different in the next few weeks. There will be news as well as featured posts and many other things I am not at liberty to discuss :) The MOG Gazette will continue to be a source for featured posts. Ideally, MOG will be the place where you can get all of your music news (thus rendering the need to visit a million other sites for the same content null and void) as well as a spot for great music reviews, writing, community, etc;

  10. Anna says I agree with you, rude (not!) Kevin. I would also like it to show more than 4 posts. I also think we should *make* Kate discuss.

  11. ch33v3rs says Many thanks... This is great and about time it is being addressed! I was just thinking to post something very similar to this. MOG is changing. I feel that many folks are regurgitating articles/tour schedules found on other sites and not truly sharing anything new that is opinion based. I do feel that there should be a place for these type of things on MOG, but not as a posting because it is not why this site why founded. I could get that type of info anywere! I come to MOG because people tell me how they feel about the music they listen to on a daily basis and that challenges me to examine the type of music I listen to by broadening my understanding through the passion conveyed in a post. I have never found another site that does this in the way MOG does. Over the last five months MOG seems to have attracted many new users that either write professionally or have other self promoting agendas that have taken away from the organic viral nature that made it feel like I was talking to someone that was telling me about the next great sound that I should check out. It kinda makes me sad. Love the MOG, but things must grow. respect always, KIARAN

  12. Michael Goldberg says Thanks for the comments. As Kate noted, we are going to have a new home page quite soon, and it will include music news and featured posts and a lot of other things that we hope you'll dig. We're working really hard to make MOG even better than it currently is. I hope that after the new home page is up, you'll live with it for a while before rushing to judgement. We hope you like it, and the other improvements.

  14. Rawkkiddoh says Mike and Kate I was not rushing to judgement, I was making an observation. I did not want this to come off as a mog stinks post, my feelings towards mog are far from that setiment. I have done my best to tell everyone I know about this site, it is different from anything I have seen on the net, and I plan on staying around for quite some time. The thing I have noticed is that the heard of section has been more of a news section as of late. When I first came to MOG, that was were I got my start. It introduced me to many wonderful people, and many wonderful posts. What I have seen as of late is 4 or 5 people in the heard on section, and thats about it. I am excited to see what is coming in the future, and I am sure its going to be tip top. You guys have done nothing but good things with MOG so far, so I do not see why this would change.

  16. Hmmm says I agree wholeheartedly- both that's it's nice to see more personal opinion on the front page and that Mog rules regardless. Mog is more infallible than the pope.

  17. Mike the Knife says Can MOG be improved upon? I guess we shall see. Meanwhile, MOG on, brothers and sisters! (I know where I can find your individual brilliance...)

  18. chucky says I love mog. Mog can do no wrong. That being said, wouldn't it be cool if the featured mogs were on the sidebar of the mogos, like the top posts of the day?

  19. Rawkkiddoh says Thats a great idea ashley, and Michelle I am glad they care enough about what we think to assure us that they are always trying to make MOG better.

  22. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says I agree with Kevin but disagree with Kiaran about the massive self-promotion. I think we can all see through this. All of my posts are about getting people to check out music.........and I post my own songs once in awhile. I know that the IODA-thing can make posts look like they're promo-tools for the sake of promo. I use the IODA links as much as possible but only posts songs that I truly love........because I want the rest of you to listen in. When I post my own songs I would be lying if I didn't hope that many would listen and maybe even like. Still everything here is about the love of music and I want to share that whether it means offering a free download from IODA or posting my own songs. There is still a long way to myspace. Mog has become a world of its own. There are popular people, less popular people, influential people, fucked up people (who?) and so on and so on and so on. I think that it is important that we keep looking through made by non-trusted moggers. We all have plenty of trusted moggers and if we only communicate with them.....then I can see mog go bad. Henry
