10 Years Ago Today

On March 9, 1997, at 12:30 a.m., Biggie left with his entourage in two GMC Suburbans to return to his hotel after an announcement was made that the party would finish early. Biggie traveled in the front passenger seat alongside his associates, Damion "D-Rock" Butler, Junior M.A.F.I.A. member Lil' Cease and driver, Gregory "G-Money" Young. Combs traveled in the other vehicle with three bodyguards. The two trucks were trailed by a Chevrolet Blazer carrying Bad Boy's director of security.By 12:45 a.m. the streets were crowded with people leaving the event. Biggie's truck stopped at a red light 50 yards from the museum. While waiting for the light to change, a white Toyota Land Cruiser made a U-turn and cut in-between Biggie's vehicle and the Chevrolet Blazer behind. Simultaneously, a black Chevrolet Impala pulled up alongside Biggie's truck. The driver of the Impala (an African-American male neatly dressed in a blue suit and bow tie) rolled down his window, drew a 9mm blue-steel pistol and shot numerous rounds into the GMC Suburban; four bullets hit Biggie in the chest. While some viewed this as just another bad example that rap music seems to exude, most of us saw it as the passing of one of the greatest emcee's we have ever seen. Even if you are not a fan of hip hop, the passing of Christopher George Latore Wallace was a huge loss to the hip hop community. Similar to the passing of artists like Dimebag Darrell, Randy Rhodes, Kurt Cobain, Elliot Smith and others that seemed to define the music they made, he is still remembered today.

  1. MrFrost says I wasnt the hugest biggie fan around, mostly because I'm from california.. rap fans were so divided in 1996 with the east vs. west thing. In my neck of the woods nobody really listened to any hip hop from the east coast. Especially after 2pac got killed.... It took me years after Biggies death to even really listen to his stuff. It all seems silly now in hindsight, but thats how it was. I still know alot of N.Y hip hop fans that still hold resentment for anything coming out of california, because "we killed biggie" when he was in L.A.

  2. Nixne Svix says dont mean to be callous , but "lay down with dogs and you get fleas" , he promoted and capitalised on his "status" . well , it all catches up at some point...still a man lost life and there fore ...it is a sad episode. my love to his familia... PS...Dime and Randy were accidents or random violence. Big lived the life of a downward spiral/dangerous circle. poor elliot and cobain , as sad....they took their own lives. To me a murder from anger ,a murder from lifestyle and 2 suicides from depression dont really seem the same . Darrel is closer to Lennon , in that they both didnt ask for it or inflict it...i deal with a lot of homocide/suicide , unfortunate as it is...they arent the same to me, because they are so scenario dependent... but peace Big's Family.....RIP MC Smalls....

  3. MrFrost says I disagree with that. What you just said could apply to 2pac, but not biggie. Biggie really wasnt into the fueding and promoting negativity. As i said before, im not a huge biggie fan, but I'll give him credit with that.... he was definitely the one with a cool head. Pac on the other hand, at times he was absolutely out of control, he lived his life like he didnt expect to reach 30 years old, and he didnt. I could type for hours on this subject but i'll spare you all lol

  4. Nixne Svix says listen to his lyrics, he promoted violence. whether it was in context or not and he talked mad shit , c'mon...did you see his interviews? ie , the one where he was "Paranoid" about people being after him? You dont have people trying to kill you cause you Rap , or Will Smith , Mase and Vanilla Ice would be long dead...I lived two miles from where Trick Daddy lived before his fame...im not just a pretty dumb white punk bitch....sorry to get verbal, i could go on but ill spare ya ...lol

  5. MrFrost says Biggie didnt say anything in his rhymes that any other run of the mill rap artists werent saying also. Who did he talk mad shit about in his songs? Him being paranoid wasnt because of anything he had done. Its just fame and money period, PLUS the environment he came from. The average person would have enough of a hard time dealing with a windfall of money, but if you're from a place where people get killed for a 10 dollar sack of weed, one could understand how it'd make you a little more uncomfortable. Its funny that you mentioned mase, did you know the "goodie too shoes" Mase moved from NYC to atlanta because his best friend had gotten killed, and supposedly they were after mase too? Did you know vanilla ice was hung upside down from a hotel balcony by his ankles over money, and he also was a "good too shoes". If these last 2 artists had gotten killed, would you be saying they deserved it too? Shit happens.

  7. MrFrost says are you aware you just posted a video where hes saying hes paranoid because random people will hurt him because he has money now? which is pretty much what i said in my last post. For your point to have any merit, he would have had to been hurt by someone he allegedly did wrong in his neighborhood. which is kind of far fetched considering he was murdered by corrupt L.A.P.D associates. (the facts about his murder support this) good try though. If i didnt know what i was talking about you would have had me convinced.

  8. Nixne Svix says I know , igrew up at those schools , ive responded to gang shootings. My high school in 1992 had 3 on duty police in 93......

  9. Nixne Svix says um , he said he robbed people , therefore, vis-a-vis, he was the next target for he was now rich , because he would of robbed himself..im not trying to be a dick , but BIG was a gangster .....and you are what what you are....

  10. Nixne Svix says "you on the corner , ill rob that n...., now im that n....with the benz, so i understand...." B.I.G.-qoute unqoute....what are you talking about mr . frost , did you watch this vid? he admits that he was a mob , rob , gang banger....and you are cool with that? mase is a preacher now, fyi. again , im not some dumb punk ... if he was a real gangsta or not? well , you fuck with the bull , and some trigger is pulled on your bullshit. welcome to the world, BIG was not INNOCENT . The guy was in the line of fire on purpose...just listen to his lyrics. everyone knows Hip Hop artists are a product of thier enviornment like Punk rockers rebel against society(PRODUCTS OF LIFE), so was he what he proposed he was or a Vanilla Ice ...Suge Shakedown? So in the latter , you would agree then ; BIG was a shit talking liar who never did the things he oh so capitalised on? yeah , Mase was a target cause he talked shit and couldnt hang, again lifestyle, he freaked and ran.. ...vanilla? a shit talking ass from south florida "A1A Beach Front Avenue!"...I equate the Rap Threat with Mother Nature...You wanna fuck? You will get fucked...dont be a gangbanger wanna be or a true gang banger unless you are ready to Bang...if you take to the sea , better be ready to be a sailor....nuff said. no harm Frost, just letting you know my view...

  11. MrFrost says you completely misunderstood what he said.. He said he knows what happens when you're on the corner, if you see someone riding in a benz, you rob him. and he was saying, "IM now THAT guy in a benz that they will try to rob" it seems to me you think that because of whatever you used to do in your background, that it automatically puts you '"in the know" about what happened with biggie, and from what ive read.. its just not so. Using your line of logic, every rapper in the world deserves it if they're killed. Im not interested in arguing with you, or trading jabs or any of that. Have your opinion... you're entitled.

  12. Rawkkiddoh says Damn people, wake up in the morning to get an old fashioned Cali/Florida battle going on. Just want to address something, no matter what you think of an artist, when one passes you have to see the loss as bad. I was never a Pantera fan, but saw what Dimebag brought to the table with his musical abilities. Regardless of what B.I.G. was rapping about, you still have to see it as a great loss to the overall hip hop world. Cam, I have to go with MrFrost on this one and say Biggie didnt say anything in his rhymes that any other run of the mill rap artists werent saying also. There has always been a beef between east coast/west coast rappers. In fact the whole "beef" thing goes as far back as Boogie Down Productions vs. The Juice Crew. The fact that he lost his life over something as trivial as a lyric or two is a shame.

  14. Nixne Svix says I hear you Frost and I agree its a tragedy, dont think I am not upset when anyone dies; ecspecially artists. but I think I said that already. I did say he is missed (and I was never a fan)...all in the early part of this thread. but the dime -BIG connection doesnt sit well with me. Dime didnt have a negative thing to say , ever. Lennon never promoted violence , even if it was in a "hypothetical enviornment" that BIG was just speaking about where he came from...Lennon came from an anti-government view , but never said "pick up a gun" even in a abject sense like Frost proposes. As far as lyrics go , its art - everyone has thier own feelings but only the artist really knows. Im sorry BIG died , im sorry Pac died , im sorry 60,000 vietnam vets commited suicide after the war. 57,000 died in battle. im sorry that girl got hit by a car and i couldnt save he, im sorry that all those Iraqi's are dying , im sorry our troops are dying....see where im going with this. again , respect to his Family , good post about a man who is no longer with us. The art the world lost ,and that is the the point...
