How stacked is your collection

The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and National Association of Record Manufacturers have come up with a list of the 200 albums they think everyone should own. It's pretty bad. I mean, who doesn't agree that Creed's Human Clay was a better record than London Calling by The Clash? the list can be found it the comments section. Hold your nose because it stinks.

  6. Iren says I guess the message is that we need to move more units of these records..... that said the older I get the more I see that these lists are worthless... who are these people to tell me what I should own? what I should like? what I 'Have to Hear'?.... music is a world to be discovered and find what connects with you.... I can see the value of saying "if you are just getting into metal you might what to check out these bands" and then listing 5 or 10 albums/ bands of interest... but these lists aren't worth more than a paragraph of ridicule.... don't get me started....

  8. Wozniak says 1. Overwhelmingly white male and not so diverse in music. I know it's the rock hall of fame, but don't call it 'the 200 albums everybody should own' - call it 'the 200 rock albums we, who have no taste, think everybody should own.' But then, it's not all rock, either. What a bunch of weird fucks. 2. The fact that Coldplay made the list negates all credibility and importance. I'm moving on now...

Oh, and while I wouldn't necessarily put the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack above (or near) Hendrix, it really was a landmark album, and not all that bad. Which is probably the nostalgia talking, but whatever. Now I get to go take apart the rest of the list. :)

  19. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says This looks pretty bad. But.......I own 40% of the albums and every album in the top 10. But please forgive..........I used to work in the industry collecting around 50 albums each month. In the beginning I was greedy and took everything I could find. 35% of the 40% have been put away in boxes. I promise.....I really do. PROMISE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There was quite a Led Zep fan working on that list. I own everything by them, by the Beatles and by Pink Floyd......but I do not consider them "must have" albums. Lambchop - Is A Woman....now that's an album you need to have. Say Hi To Your Mom - Impeccable Blahs...another one. Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker.....definitely Nick Drake - Bryter Layter A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders Aimee Mann - Lost In Space Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - I See A Darkness Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene Built To Spill - Keep It Like A Secret Cat Power - The Greatest Chris Whitley - Dirt Floor Christian Kjellvander - Songs From A Two-Room Chapel Damien Jurado - Ghost of David Interpol - Antics Television - Marquee Moon Iron and Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days Jim O'Rourke - Insignificance Joanna Newson - YS Joni Mitchell - Court and Spark Kristofer Åström - Northern Blues Lemonheads - It's A Shame About Ray Magnolia Electric Co. - Hard To Love A Man Neil Young - Silver & Gold (Yes.....a rather new one) The Notwist - Neon Golden Patrick Porter - Maybe Waltz The Roots - Game Theory Scott Walker - Scott The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow Sigur Rós - ( ) The Sleepy Jackson - Lovers Songs of Soil - The Painted Trees of Ghostwood Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans Swearing at Motorists - Number Seven Uptown Townes van Zandt - Live at the Old Quarter Just to name a few.......lots are forgotten. One thing that always makes me laugh is how R and B is considered and ordered on the ROCK lists..This list is FUCKING BRUTAL, almost an affront to humanity. Why did they rank em, that ruined it. Maybe alphabetical would've been better. Live? I really need to own that? Big Willie Style? Why do I need that? I've heard some of these albums so much..that I never want to hear them again. I looked pretty close..this list is a MAJOR LABEL COMMERCIAL, no indies in sight. I only need 4 Jazz Albums..I THINK not. And being the only Coldplay fan on mog, I definitely think that they lost creditability over OTHER bands.... if someone thinks A Rush of Blood to the Head is the worst album on this list, then I'd like to have a chat.

I think I'm getting close to the point where I'm feeling confident about my musical preferences.....but it was a long journey. There have been a time when I liked awful bands I will not list here......but then when I entered the hip-league I spent a couple of years praising the work of Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Velvet Underground and so on without knowing what the hell I was talking about. That is just as bad. All we can do is keep on being curious and get to truly know the music we love. If we stumple on shit......then we'll know it's shit and move on. First we have to learn to tell shit and greatness from each other.

  48. mktackabery says NARM. If I remember correctly, NARM was the bunch of weenies that came up with the American Music Awards. A finer, more altruistic event you'll never find . . . NOT. Enya, 57?? OMFG. Wait, I have to say that again. ENYA. And not even the good Enya, for crying out loud. This is a TOP-SELLING albums list, who are they kidding? I can't even begin to relate how much this list pisses me off. No wonder the record industry is dying. . .

  51. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says One thing the majors did right was to do things so terribly wrong that all the indie-labels emerged and did everything right. If the majors dissapear many indies will turn sour as soon as they leave the underground. I hate major labels but they give me many laughs.

  55. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says The CD from you hasn't made it to my mailbox yet but I am starting to worry. What can I expect? Was this post just an excuse to post that video? You just sat there waiting to post your favorite Shania-piece. You waited long enough for everyone to think you were only joking.

  56. MaximoGirl says Anyone that tries to tell me I should own the Dirty Dancing Soundtrack, Shania Twaine or Phil Collins album is a fucking idiot. Fact. If nothing else the list gave me a good chuckle and made me feel proud to dig indie. I was almost disappointed to see the White Stripes in there, it means some jerk in a suit knows one of my favourite underrated bands. p.s. I just noticed upon rescanning the list that the soundtrack to Footloose is in that list, that's just plain wrong.

  57. El Monko and Son says Can we draft a letter of scorn? I used to love these lists; I just found it fun to debate with them, and sometimes, like the Rolling Stone "top 100 albums of the last 20 years" in 1987, use them for a shopping list. Now, I can't stand it. Any group that makes a list like this and leaves off "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" can only be described by language too pornographic even to be posted on the internet. And I am so with Samthebutcher. I know there is a contractual clause that forces these organizations to include "Hotel California," due to certain Masonic rituals that are necessary to sustain the Federal Reserve Bank, but I can't see any reason in all of creation that could justify "Hell Freezes Over," except perhaps as a metaphoric description of its own inclusion on any list that includes anything by the Sex Pistols.

  58. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says Footloose.......now do you remember the movie? He gets mad.....he's had enough....he won't take it anymore...he's ready to stick it to the man.......he's ready for war........What does he do? He drives his VW to a barn and starts dancing. Yes.....release the anger! RELEASE THE ANGER!!!!!!!!!!

  59. Rawkkiddoh says Now now Me, did you have to go there? I am a little nervous about the cd if it hasnt gotten there yet. I am hoping that our recent snow storms didnt have anything to do with the delay. I can assure you, none of the 200 albums listed here are on the album. I hope thats a good thing. Maximo, pretty much all the list is plain wrong. I think the funniest addition to the list is the Forrest Gump soundtrack which is basically a mix tape of very well known bands. If you are going to include a soundtrack, the songs on it should have been made for the film. Now excuse me as I get loose....footloose

Used c.d's in new condition , all one price $7.95 , good trade ins $5. so its like renting , a great idea from Larry, the guy should be a millionaire and if Mortar and Bricks all close down , well...there is always Paris ... and Horse , dude google the "London Bus Stop" , I found these clowns who take vintage hits and add bad white boy rap treatment to the song. The first song on an album , FOOTLOOSE! qoute from movie...."You cannot dance its against the law here".....Kevin Bacon: "Jump Back!"

  65. Rawkkiddoh says Aint that the truth August. Sad thing is, the reason she is so high up is the canadian influence here. Ask any Canadian where she is from, and they will know. Come on Canada, where is Shania from. I will give you a hint, its near Kapuskasing

As you Kevin...and many of you...I'm a dad too. A dad who has not been drinking too much lately. Do not know what happened but I don't know if I can write. Went on Youtube and searched for the first thing entering my head......think it's time for bed.

  76. fastnbulbous says Generally I think those kind of lists are fun. That one is oh so un-fun. I did a top 500, but went a little crazy with the "honorable mentions" that it might as well be a top 1000, heh. No, I didn't make it this afternoon, it sort of evolved over the years. I'd never presume anyone should own everything on it, people's tastes vary too much. But I'd like to think it's a fun list.

  79. Rawkkiddoh says Fast, that is an impressive list I might say. I did not feel the need to argue with any of your choices. Chucky, it is a lot to take in. I went through all of it, mostly because the people who decide who gets into the rock and roll hall of fame made the list. I was saddened to see Mr. Eminem with 2 spots in the top 60, while many other hip hop artists were left out.

And Jameson, you took the words out of my mouth: 33 DIXIE CHICKS WIDE OPEN SPACES 1998 Country 34 MILES DAVIS KIND OF BLUE 1959 Jazz 39 BEATLES THE WHITE ALBUM 1968 Rock 40 SOUNDTRACK : SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER 1977 Soundtrack 40 SOUNDTRACK : SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER 1977 Soundtrack 41 JIMI HENDRIX ARE YOU EXPERIENCED ? 1967 Rock 97 CELINE DION FALLING INTO YOU 1996 Adult Contemporary 98 NEIL YOUNG HARVEST 1972 Rock To think that these two albums should even touch the same air is laughable. Oh and just for the record, Creed was the first and only band whose record i bought and then wanted to burn, but promtly sold it.

Pink Floyd - 'Dark side of the Moon' was the first album I ever bought - when I was about 12 or 13, and I used to own The Sex Pistols. Not sure what this says about me. (I'd like to think it means I have excellent music taste!)
