WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

I've got substance, now bring on the temptation

Posted over 2 years ago
A while back I started going through my music collection to find my 10 favorite albums that I own. I took a hiatus from this, but had time today to put myself back in the mix. So far I have 5 categories covered:1. Favorite hip-hop – Tribe Called Quest – “Low End Theory”2. Favorite Foreign – Jean Leloup – “Le Dome”3. Favorite Classic Rock – Neil Young – “Harvest”4. Favorite Comedy – David Cross – “It’s Not Funny”5. Favorite Punk - NOFX - "So Long and Thanks For All the Shoes"Today I started my morning by listening to one of my many 80's mix tapes. This was a great decade for music, and much of my collection is filled with the bands from this era. The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Psychedelic Furs are just a few of the bands I still listen to on a regular basis. There is one band that has always stood out for me though, and that band is New Order. Born from the ashes of Joy Division, they are an act that many felt would not achieve the popularity their predecessors did. They have had the staying power, and continue to release relevant music today. While their collection is huge, I would not be able to live with out Substance. This is one album I can put on for any occasion, and enjoy every minute of it. I usually do not like to make "best of's" my favorites of an artist, to me this is the easy way out. I will make the exception this one time and say that Substance is my favorite 80's album.

  1. Augusts1 says Substance is a great hits cd but I'd have to say that "Low Life" is still my fav NO album. So many great albums in the '80s. My fave Cure cd to this day is "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me" which came out in '87(& I have the LP & cd) & I have to listen to it periodically. I'd have a difficult time coming up w/my 10 favs of all time so I just won't do it, lol!

  2. chulsmith says if we're talking 80s, i'm all about appetite for destruction... but new order's pretty cool, too.

  3. Rawkkiddoh says I know, and usually I would say Brotherhood was my favorite, but Substance just has everything for me. Including the second disc of b-sides.

  4. Rawkkiddoh says Funny chul, I thought you would have said a little round and round by Ratt

  6. glammerhammer says I think you're right! I LOVE New Order and Substance was the best highlight. But what about depeche Mode?

  7. Augusts1 says Depeche Mode is great as well. "Some Great Reward" & "Music For The Masses" are both great '80s albums.

  8. Rawkkiddoh says I will go with August on this one. Both are great, and worth a listen!

  9. Dale says I'll see your Brotherhood and August's Low-Life, and raise you Power Corruption and Lies. Any album that includes "Blue Monday" is golden to me.

  10. Augusts1 says Psychedelic Furs' "Talk Talk Talk" & "Book of Days" are awesome too! The Cure's "Disintegration", The Smiths' "Louder Than Bombs", Siouxsie & The Banshees "Peepshow", NIN "Pretty Hate Machine", Elvis Costello "Spike" & "Blood & Chocolate", Talk Talk "The Colour Of Spring", Talking Heads "Stop Making Sense", all amazing & I could go on & on & on!

  11. Rawkkiddoh says Dale I hear that, its why I had to chose Substance. PCAL also has Your Silent Face, one of my favorites. August, I feel like I should add something, but the list looks good. Wait R.E.M. "Murmur", Pixies "Doolittle", and the Church "Starfish"

  12. Blue Meenie says off the top of my head, one album i widened the grooves the most, was King Crimson "Discipline" circa 1981. Pratically wore that puppy out.

  13. Zeroskilz says Musically, the 80's were a big non-event for me. I just wasn't into music then. For some reason, I've never gone back and truly investigated. I've picked up a bit of Joy Division, New Order and such, but most of it just doesn't exist for me. I'm really missing out on a lot this way, but I have a hard enough time keeping up with new music now; let alone picking up a lot of its roots.

  14. Rawkkiddoh says Blue Meenie, I have meant to check out King Crimson, but like Zero, it seems to be something I forget. I have made a note in my palm pilot and will be looking at it this week. Zero if you would like, I could compile an "essential" listening cd for you. Send me a mogmail if you are interested.

  15. Augusts1 says Yes, Kev all those are great as well, I just couldn't keep going on. Pixies "Surfer Rosa" & REM's "Fables of the Reconstruction", XTC "Oranges & Lemons" are favs of mine as well. King Crimson put out some great albums in the '80s, that's true Blue.

  16. Zeroskilz says Thanks Rawk, will do. I can tell you that, of what Augustus mentioned, you only need to look at the first few artists on my Mog page to know that I love the Pixies. I'm familiar with REM (and like a lot of their early stuff) and am not a fan of XTC (yes, I hear this is a crime in certain parts of the country). So, you can build around that feedback if you wish. Really though, I'd appreciate anything. I love finding new music. :)

  17. Rawkkiddoh says I am in the same boat with XTC, aside from the Dear God track never liked them. Sorry August!

  18. Augusts1 says I'm a HUGE XTC fan & have 7 of their cds. Have you heard "Oranges & Lemons"? It's far rockier than most of their cds & was my 1st. If you want I could post it to Multiply for you to hear.
    Permalink posted 02/18/2007
  19. Zeroskilz says Unfortunately, I have heard it. Sorry, I'd like to be there with you on this one.... Just personal preference.

  20. Rawkkiddoh says I could try it again August, like I am going to say no to free music.
    Permalink posted 02/18/2007
  21. Augusts1 says S'ok Zero, not a problem(how adult of me eh Kev? lol). I can see how someone wouldn't like them cause they're pretty pop oriented. If you've already heard it I'm not gonna force you Kev to listen to it again. It's up to you, just let me know. XTC are just amazing songcraftsmen & there is no one quite like them. And they've been around since the mid '70s.

  22. Rawkkiddoh says Post it up, and let me have a listen. I have gone back to artists that I thought I didnt like before and my opinion changed.
    Permalink posted 02/18/2007
  23. Augusts1 says Ok. Yea, I do that alot, like with Sigur Ros. My taste changes constantly, lol!

  24. Mike the Knife says I'm on board with most of these choices - and think that picking one favorite of any genre is sheer madness. Oh yeah. For what it's worth, I believe that XTC is as good as pop/rock gets. And "Dead God" might be my least favorite of their songs. The albums "English Settlement," "Skylarking," and perhaps the last two ("Apple Venus" and "Wasp Star") are all exceptional. Their leading light Andy Partridge is heavily influenced by the Beatles, Beach Boys, '60s psychedelia, and olde English folk music, but he can rock the roof off when he gets the inclination. Try a little, Rawk, and see if you like.

  25. Augusts1 says Yes, a fellow XTC fan! Thanks for your input Mike, I agree w/all you just said about them!

  26. Anna says Trying to pick a favourite NO & JD album is like trying to pick a favourite NO & JD album; impossible. :) And to think that I fell in love with them so recently...
    Permalink posted 02/19/2007
  27. Rawkkiddoh says So true Anna, I think thats why I took the easy way out and went with Substance.
    Permalink posted 02/19/2007
  28. Augusts1 says Kev, what the hell are you doing on your avatar?
    Permalink posted 02/19/2007
  29. Rawkkiddoh says You will laugh at this, but look at the bottom of the picture and you will see my birthday cake.
    Permalink posted 02/19/2007
  30. Augusts1 says I thought that's what that was! lmao you are so funny, trying to act all psycho/tough!
