WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Does my record collection suck?

Posted over 2 years ago
Does my record collection suck? I had a thought similar to that after seeing who won at the Grammy's this year. It came after realizing that many of the acts who were nominated do not seem to have a place in my record collection. My first thought, as always, is how piss poor the Grammy's are. Then I began to think, what if it’s my choice in music that sucks. What if all along, what I thought was good, is nothing more than mediocre musical ramblings. Back in December I made a post of my favorite songs of 2006, they were as follows:1. “Fidelity” – Regina Spektor2. “Mardy Bum” – Artic Monkeys3. “Blood Thirsty Bastards” – Dirty Pretty Things4. “Patent Pending” – Heavens5. “The Man I Killed” – NOFX6. “Fire Island, AK” – The Long Winters7. “Cold December” – Matt Costa8. “Rough Gem” – Islands9. “Are You There Margaret, its Me God” – The Lawrence Arms10. “They Call It” – AtmosphereAs far as I know, only one of these acts was nominated for a Grammy this year.Over the years the number of top 40 artists in my collection has dwindled. I no longer listen to the radio, except of 2 stations here in Minnesota. That means the majority of my time listening to music, is done through digital means. I have a big collection with around 1300 cd's and close to 200 records. Music is always on when I am doing things around the house or when I go on one of my runs. I would just like to see some of the artists that we talk about on MOG get the credit they deserve. I laugh every year when I see the Grammy board throw in an artist that really doesn't have a chance of winning. It happened this year when I saw the Pet Shop Boys were up for two awards, Best Dance Recording, and Best Electronic/Dance Album. I have almost all of their music, and thought Fundamental was an incredible recording. To see them beat out by the likes of Madonna and Justin Timberlake put a bad taste in my mouth. Part of me is happy however, that some of my cherished groups have never been nominated for that elusive trophy. It seems to be a curse, and once you have won it, the screams of "sell-out" come from the audience. Each year it’s the same thing with this award show, yet I find myself still watching. I guess the hope of seeing a band I consider musically creative winning a Grammy keeps me coming back.

  3. Rawkkiddoh says I agree with you Anna. I still like to see a band that most people would say, "Who are they?" win an award like that. Kind of like last year when the Three 6 Mafia won an grammy, and most of the audience was like, "What the hell?"

  5. doombilly says Fuck tha Grammys. At least you have 2 radio stations you can listen to somewhat. Excepting NPR I would rather swallow broken glass then tune into ClearChannelica radio, which is the only option here in the Queen City.

  6. Dale says Meh, the Grammys are less and less about artistic achievement, and more about commerce and keeping music "safe". Well, forget that baloney. I hereby declare that your record collection does NOT suck, and who's gonna argue with me? Bring it on!

  7. SamTheButcher says No, Kevin, Blair's wrong. Your collection sucks. :D I keed. My "Oh My God The Grammys Are Fucking Broken" moment came when Jethro goddam fucking Tull beat out Metallica for "Best Heavy Metal Album" of 1989. That's right, "Crest of a Knave" beat out "...And Justice For All". (Apparently, the Tull didn't even make the trip, so sure was everyone that Metallica would win) (And apparently '89 was the year of the Grammy goof, the Fresh Prince beat out Public Enemy) (But "He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper" is a pretty good album) (Ok, shutting up now.)

  8. Rawkkiddoh says I have been "ok-ed" from the EMCD man himself, all is good. doombilly, I forgot about NPR so that makes it 3. Although that one only comes in certain areas around the city and I have to be in my car. Sam, I had almost forgot about those two moments in Grammy history.....lets not bring that up again.

  10. Blue Meenie says nuttin' wrong with your collection Kev....it's just any award show only knows "good" music AFTER people tell them it's good, and those peeps are record promoters etc... Dale says it best "commerce and music safety". Only college radio has some listening credibility where i live, the rest SUCK HUGE....

  11. Rawkkiddoh says I know, not very teacher like of me. I happen to love the artist who designed it though, Coop. http://www.coopstuff.com/index2.html Very cool artist, and the name Coop is what a lot of my friends call me. It's short for Cooper.

  13. Viva La Britt says Kevin, of course your collection doesn 't suck- stop being so facetious ;) To echo Dale's sentiments, this award is mostly about rewarding safety and homogenization (even though sometimes they do get it right, Outkast's _Speakerrboxx/ The Love Below_ winning Album of the Year in '04) as well as popularity and hype (ie Ludacris taking Best Rap Album Sunday night over The Roots- be for f___ing real). Heh, I know the artists I like are good _because_ they rarely get nominated, nevermind win. Like, the day Queens of the Stone Age win a Grammy is the day I pull a Van Gogh.

_I guess the hope of seeing a band I consider musically creative winning a Grammy keeps me coming back_
Now that you put it that way, I believe that's why I still watch also. Damn, I have hope- who knew?

  14. Rawkkiddoh says Couldn't agree more about the Roots, I guess they needed to cut their hair. Funny you should metion the QOTSA, I watched their performance on SNL last night. I must say I need to check them out in concert some time.

  15. Viva La Britt says Ha, the performance when Will Ferrell makes an appearance? So awesome. Kevin, listen to me- you *gots* (yes, gots) so see QOTSA live. You will die. Josh Homme is not human. I burn a candle daily that the release date for their new album is announced 'cause it means tour dates are soon to follow.

  18. Hodad says Hey, At least there were a few good choices this year (although only a few). One of my favorite CD's and about my favorite song won Grammy's this year. The Flaming Lips won a Grammy for "At War with the Mystics" (Best Engineered Album Non-Classical) and won another Grammy for "The Wizard Turns On" (Best Rock Intrumental performance) which is great. In defense of the Grammy's, it actually has gotten better since the Jethro Tull fiasco. Radiohead and Beck have won multiple Grammy's since then and there are about 90 categories now (although they still have best Polka album). Since it is an industry award, big money-making names (the Red Hot Chili Peppers) are always going win big...They won a couple that the Raconteurs or Artic Monkeys probably should have won... What they should probably do is make two shows...one for the pop audience and one for the non-pop audience (the James Blunt performance made me sick to my stomach for about 10 seconds before I changed the channel)...

  19. UtahSpike says I will say the Grammy Lists make a little more sense then the ones in the UK for the Brit awards . . . Every year they nominate Beck as Best International Male even if he hasn't released anything in that particular year . . . I don't think your record collection sucks because of not owning the stuff . . . I'd rather be the shepherd than the sheep any day . . . .

  20. Daviso says I was thinking the other day when I was putting together a set list for my next podcast theme show that my music collection sucks too (body count of lps & cd = mp3s now which is frightening) in a different way, and it is not the grammy's fault that there is such a glut of crap, I just won't get rid of, except for all those damn bands who want to be that one hit wonder or cookie cutter flavor of the month. That is the real waste

...But then again producing an original theme show is not an easy task and I am glad i saved any cd, 7" or lp with any glimmer of something interesting, everything else has been sold up the river, as the only true commerical value the grammys or bad-popular music has was when i used to get "big" marketing name cd's in the mail which i would promptly sell to a store before they lost their value in college. Most usually in the wrapper. Have you taken a peek in the used bin lately?

For real "radio" alternatives I offer you for free:
Mogger MK’s show not your usual bollocks from the UK
Two drunk guys from radio free brooklyn U.S.A.
My home spun dj spork and review stalker present! show.

  21. Anonymous says i don't see the logic of doubting yourself cuz a bunch of fools won some awards in the public eye. but once again, another one of those posts where someone doubts themselves at the expense of taste, in favor of populism, gets highlighted on mog. there's a reason why corporations want yu to doubt yourself in favor of what every one likes - it cuz they want to be the middle man for all yr purchases. i can't sympathize with what yr saying. the one post where i doubted myself became my most popular post. i can't say how shallow that is. yur taste in music seems fine by me.

  23. milkshake says Great post! The Brits are tomorrow in the UK and I don't have any of the albums from the nominated, especially since they decided to drop the Best Pop catergory (seriously WTF? I always thought that us Brits quite liked our pop music, but the Brits bosses seem to be quite snobby about it) I do get the feeling that maybe some of the music I like isn't quite credible when I see these awards, thought with a lot of the artists I like singing in a foreign language, they're unlikely to be nominated. Actually when I watch awards shows I always feel I "should" own some of these albums. Back when I was into US R&B & Hip Hop, I did become conscious that I didn't have many UK albums. I recognise that UK music is doing really well for itself and do like quite a few of the songs, but I don't buy any of the singles/albums. (I want to - just nothing's grabbing me. Plus it would be fun to have an artist I really liked nominated!) Anyway this comment's kinda going off topic, but your post reminded me of what I think of my music collection when I watch award shows.

  24. milkshake says Every year they nominate Beck as Best International Male even if he hasn’t released anything in that particular year . . . ^ LOL so true! And the Best Urban category was always full of people who hadn't released anything too. No wonder they dropped it, they were always stuggling to find nominees.

Thanks for pointing that out Anna! Hodad, couldn't agree more about the Flaming Lips album. I was a little upset to see a lot of people listed it as a "disappointment" this year. I felt that way at first, but it has really grown on me. UtahSpike, I guess Beck can be considered the Meryl Streep of UK Grammys. Daviso, thanks for the links, I have bookmarked them and will be checking them out tonight. hey buddy, that was kind of my point with this post. I will be the first to defend any band that I have in my collection, even the guilty pleasures that no one knows about. It would be nice if there was an award show based on artistic merit, rather than record sales. Joxley, you mean to tell me your haven't picked that one up yet? milkshake, trust me I will take Brit Pop over US Pop anyday. I have thought many times I was born in the wrong country.

  31. milkshake says milkshake, trust me I will take Brit Pop over US Pop anyday. I have thought many times I was born in the wrong country. ^Yeah, totally so would I! There really any songs which are that "poppy" nowadays from the US (unless there are and they're not released in the UK). There's nothing like Girls Aloud or The Sugababes (GA are a bit of a guilty pleasure for me lol) I'm not saying US pop is bad, I just don't hear any of it. We only get R&B/Rap and some rock releases over here mainly.
