Does my record collection suck?

Does my record collection suck? I had a thought similar to that after seeing who won at the Grammy's this year. It came after realizing that many of the acts who were nominated do not seem to have a place in my record collection. My first thought, as always, is how piss poor the Grammy's are. Then I began to think, what if it’s my choice in music that sucks. What if all along, what I thought was good, is nothing more than mediocre musical ramblings. Back in December I made a post of my favorite songs of 2006, they were as follows:1. “Fidelity” – Regina Spektor2. “Mardy Bum” – Artic Monkeys3. “Blood Thirsty Bastards” – Dirty Pretty Things4. “Patent Pending” – Heavens5. “The Man I Killed” – NOFX6. “Fire Island, AK” – The Long Winters7. “Cold December” – Matt Costa8. “Rough Gem” – Islands9. “Are You There Margaret, its Me God” – The Lawrence Arms10. “They Call It” – AtmosphereAs far as I know, only one of these acts was nominated for a Grammy this year.Over the years the number of top 40 artists in my collection has dwindled. I no longer listen to the radio, except of 2 stations here in Minnesota. That means the majority of my time listening to music, is done through digital means. I have a big collection with around 1300 cd's and close to 200 records. Music is always on when I am doing things around the house or when I go on one of my runs. I would just like to see some of the artists that we talk about on MOG get the credit they deserve. I laugh every year when I see the Grammy board throw in an artist that really doesn't have a chance of winning. It happened this year when I saw the Pet Shop Boys were up for two awards, Best Dance Recording, and Best Electronic/Dance Album. I have almost all of their music, and thought Fundamental was an incredible recording. To see them beat out by the likes of Madonna and Justin Timberlake put a bad taste in my mouth. Part of me is happy however, that some of my cherished groups have never been nominated for that elusive trophy. It seems to be a curse, and once you have won it, the screams of "sell-out" come from the audience. Each year it’s the same thing with this award show, yet I find myself still watching. I guess the hope of seeing a band I consider musically creative winning a Grammy keeps me coming back.

Now that you put it that way, I believe that's why I still watch also. Damn, I have hope- who knew?
...But then again producing an original theme show is not an easy task and I am glad i saved any cd, 7" or lp with any glimmer of something interesting, everything else has been sold up the river, as the only true commerical value the grammys or bad-popular music has was when i used to get "big" marketing name cd's in the mail which i would promptly sell to a store before they lost their value in college. Most usually in the wrapper. Have you taken a peek in the used bin lately?
