Just got done reading a post by Lyla, http://mog.com/blog_post/view/42369, regarding the band Neutral Milk Hotel. She commented that not a lot of people have talked about this band and after thinking about it, I agree with her. So, while she is stuck at work, I am going to kick some knowledge about this band.With only two full albums out, they have gained sort of a cult following. Bands like Franz Ferdinand and the Arcade Fire have said they have been influenced by their music, and it’s easy to hear their influence in those bands. When In The Aeroplane Over the Sea was released, the album was highly praised by critics for its wildly inventive instrumentation and Mangum's provocative and impassioned lyrics. Once the inde kids got a hold of it, it became a classic. After a year of touring, lead singer Jeff Mangum had had enough and called it quits. Any requests for concert were turned down, including an opening spot on R.E.M.'s current tour. Mangum has not really been heard from since. Although there are reports of the band recording again, we are left with these two albums and the thought of what could have been.

    Lyla says yay! he's apparently been doing some work with the olivia tremor control, from what i've heard, but i think just playing drums occasionally. apparently he's doing sort of the same thing with apples in stereo, so that's definitely cool, but I WANT MORE. sigh. i have a jeff magnum fetish.

    Augusts1 says Yea Neutral Milk Hotel certainly has been very influential in the world of rock. I had heard of them but hadn't heard their music up until last year after I kept seeing it on various "Best Ever" cd lists in various places. I signed up for a Rhapsody.com music membership & started listening to alot of things I'd heard of or read about. So I finally got hooked into NMH's music. Thank goddess! I do hope a new album is in the works soon cause we could all use it!

    Peggah says During their last tour with DCFC, Franz played the Fool by NMH before they came out on stage. I think I was the ONLY person in the crowd that recognized it hahaha. Too bad I was like 13 when In the Aeroplane Over the Sea was released. I had the album on my computer for 5 years before I gave it a good listen. :(
