Is your band a "gay" band

Posted about 5 years ago
Further proof has come up that there are some people in this world who should not be allowed to talk, let alone think. A faith besed Ministry who calls themselves Love God's Way has released a list of "gay bands" and "safe bands". This is an organization that has a section of their website called C.H.O.P.S which stands for Changing Homosexuals into Ordinary People. Don't believe me that this kind of crap exhists, check it out for yourself. http://www.lovegodsway.org/ Anyway, I could go on and on about how narrow minded this person is, but the list speaks for itself. I could not help laughing at some of the selections to the list and was interested to find out a lot of the music I listen to is considered "gay".Here is a quote from the ministry, followed by a listing of their gay and safe bands."One of the most dangerous ways homosexuality invades family life is through popular music. Parents should keep careful watch over their children's listening habits, especially in this Internet Age of MP3 piracy."GAY BANDS:The Spores Scissor Sisters Rufus Wainwright Merzbau Ravi Shankar Wilco Bjork Tech N9ne Ghostface Killah Bobby Conn Morton Subotnik Cole Porter The String Cheese Incident Eagles of Death Metal Polyphonic Spree The Faint Interpol Tegan and Sara Erasure Le Tigre The Gossip The Doors Phish Queen The Strokes Sufjan Stevens Morrissey(?questionable?) 1. Iren says OK.... so first off... how is Man or ASTROman gay... they are an instro band... no lyrics (for the most part).... secondly I don't see King's X on either list, maybe they are too hard to place because let's see... they are a Christian band... and their bass player/ singer is gay..... this kind of stuff is interesting to see we need to make sure and know who these fools are....

  9. elketerbentzadik says Eminmen? Is that a typo? Or did they do that on purpose? The Gay list is funny. At first I was like "Scissor Sisters, Rufus Wainwright, okay they're literally Gay." Then I saw Ravi Shankar. Hmmm. By the tiem I got to Ghostface Killah I was mouthing the words "what the fuck" at my computer screen. Ya know, bands like The Gossip and Le Tigre are fixtures of Gay/Queer culture in popular music. So I at least understand their inclusion on the list, even if I think the list is ridiculous in and of itself. I wonder if they pronounce Cindy Lauper like that guy who recorded the list of bands who are forwarding a Satanic agenda back in the '80s? "Cindy Looper."

Blue, that was the point of this post and you know there are parents out there who will see this list and immidiately go and get their kids music.

  14. River Lethe says I really thought this was satire, but after looking at the site and links found there, I'm afraid it's for real. Must be exhausting to not only hate other people, but hate yourself as well. How could someone who claims to have been called "faggot" and be hurt by it, then use the slur in the chorus of a song? It's hate speech disguised as quasi-compassionate morality.

  15. Dale says Blair brought this up last night, and I noticed that the website is taking submissions. I say we really rip the system and start flooding their inbox with bands that couldn't possibly be gay, just to make the list look dumber than it already is. For example: Van Halen - hot for (male) teacher WASP - (hump guys) like a beast 50 Cent - he's into having sex (with guys), not into making love I could keep going, but I'm on a conference call, and the giggling is really unprofessional.

As a teenager, I used to LMAO over some Christian brochures about the satanistic effects of Alice Cooper and/or the evil secret messages when you played some Beatles record backwards... but that was Germany, where religion doesn't have that much of an impact on people's everyday life. Virtually nobody would have taken something like that seriously - ok, certainly some confused souls would have, but society at large just laughed. From here, we sometimes get the impression though that in America, even the weirdest weirdo religious sect can have an enormous impact on society, and politics, and the media, and people... please tell me I'm just a paranoid outsider... because I think it's SCARY

  25. ookpik says Jess, I don't know. "Westboro Baptist":http://www.godhatesfags.com/ is a real church and pretty much all they do is parade around with signs that say "God Hates Fags," particularly at funerals for people who have died of AIDS. Charming, I know, but not a hoax. Donnie Davies seems to be friends with real Christian rockers on "his myspace page":http://www.myspace.com/donniedavies, so if it's a hoax (I mean, beyond the basic self-delusion of the whole CHOPS premise), he's way undercover. I think that chorus is just a product of the fundamentalist anti-gay view that "God hates fags" is an acceptable slogan. IN ANY CASE, I don't think it would be rock'n'roll if some preacher didn't hate you for it sometimes. I look forward to the day when haters give up on homophobia and have to hold the line somewhere more subtle. "Beware of these bands that will encourage your children to be vegetarian!"

I mean, WE know it's got to be a hoax when we see certain people on that "list"... others might not. Others might just not. Dave said that every Christian with a brain laughs this off. I think so, too, but well, how many % of the population do still have a brain? Homophobia is so widespread, lots of people are going to just gobble that shit up. Gays are still a pretty easy target, after all. So, "Donnie who thinks he's funny", just bugger off! Is that gay? If so then I say computers are gay. Their website was created using computers. These people are gay too. They spend way to much time researching the gay lifestyle. Provided that it is more accurate than not, this list, to _my_ way of thinking, is a handy, concise guide to musical artists worth investigating. Personally, I'm not much concerned by its origins or intent. Also, I have not yet ruled out a satirical intention, an intention Smooth Hegemon suggests elsewhere.

  38. Augusts1 says That list has The Indigo Girls on it TWICE!! So I guess that means they really must be gay & doubly so, lmfao! What a ridiculous list. But I'm sure it's for real. I came from a Baptist upbringing which is very conservative & I remember hearing in church the kind of talk about rock music being a bad influence. I'm here to tell you that this kind of talk is very REAL! Even though I'm a recovering Baptist, my family is all still very religious & they really do think like this. It's nice to know there are some Christians out there that don't agree with that guy. Jesus Christ taught tolerance & to LOVE everyone & not to judge others. I just don't get how people can be so hateful when it says how to treat others right in the bible! And Wilco is listed. WTF is that about? Talk about ludicrous!!!!!!

  39. ookpik says I just wanted to add that I don't think the list is intended to collect "musicians who are gay." I think it is supposed to be a list of "music that can turn your kids gay." Who knows what that means? Maybe Donnie thinks Eminem can make your sons gay by turning them on, or maybe Eminem has a "gay" message in the songs where he hates his wife. bq. "If you know of a band that is Gay or propogating a Gay message "please email us":mailto:donniedavies@gmail.com so we can update." So basically everybody who "propogates a Gay message" should start emailing this dude to get on his elite list of progressive bands. Unfortunately, that means that we have to put up with this kind of crap. But that doesn't mean we have to believe in what they say or pay any attention to it. It’s a hoax! “God Hates a Fag,” “there’s no back door” to heaven, the pink shirt, the ‘stache. Ha ha. It’s an elaborate, hilarious joke, a deadly send-up of the religious right, the ex-gay movement, anti-gay ranters. Davies doesn’t meant it, doesn’t believe a word he’s saying. Or singing. What a kidder! 2. It’s not a hoax! Donnie is completely sincere—sincerely nuts, but completely sincere. He’s not an evangelical, but a fundamentalist, dripping with compassion and concern. And hate. Hate, hate, hate. But Davies doesn’t realize how hilariously idiotic he is. Still a hater. What an asshole! I’d like to propose a third possible theory… Donnie Davies is a kidder and an asshole. Are you with me? It’s a hoax but Davies—or the man playing him—mean every last word. Davies is trying to be funny—heaven’s “back door,” thanking Andrew Sullivan for “getting behind [him],” kneeling next to the guy at the control board—but he means it when sings “God hates a fag.” He may not be ex-gay (those desperate dudes don’t have a sense of humor about their predicament), but a straight religious bigot with a sense of humor. We’re watching this video—all of us secular urban hipsters—because it’s hilarious. Which means that Donnie, through the use of humor, is reaching people that he might not otherwise. And his message is this: Laugh your asses off, sinners, but the bible says a man should not lay with a man. So here’s where I’m at as of tonight: This is not a hoax. Donnie Davis is engaged in a deadly serious effort—a seriously successful effort—to spread the fundy message about homosexuality (it’s a choice, god hates it) through the intentional use of humor. And we’re all complicit! Yikes! - _further commentary here: http://www.thestranger.com/blog/2007/01/donnie_davies_a_new_theory_

The fact that most "respectable" web sites have taken it down further proves my point. I guess until Mr. Davies comes out and gives an official explination to what he was trying to accomplish, then I will decide if its a hoax or not.

As I hinted at in my comment in Dan's previous post, it would seem that as the gay community has grown more mainstream, it has lost some of its urbane awareness of other subcultures. A statement from the band stated that the members "felt it necessary to take some immediate time to focus on our friendship, as that’s more important than risking it for the sake of touring at this time."[3]. Rumors to the contrary, however, flew that the band had actually left because NOFX frontman Michael "Fat Mike" Burkett had made fun of Underoath and their religious beliefs on-stage. These rumors were debunked when Burkett told PunkNews.org in a statement of his own that Underoath's claim of needing a break was indeed true.[4] Burkett did admit to poking fun at the band and criticizing their stance on gay marriage, but emphasised that he befriended Underoath's band members at the start of the tour, had very civilized conversations with various members right up to the band's departure, that he had a personal policy of not making jokes on-stage about anyone he wasn't friends with or didn't like personally, and that there were never any hard feelings between himself and Underoath's band members.[4] Burkett also revealed on the August 2006 Fat Wreck Chords Podcast that internal troubles amongst the members of Underoath started after Spencer Chamberlain had indulged in a couple of cans of Bud Light with Burkett backstage a few nights prior to Underoath's sudden departure.[5] In an Alternative Press cover story on Underoath, Burkett told the magazine that Spencer Chamberlain had confided in him that Underoath's band members had been "having a lot of arguments over their religious beliefs."[6]. In a sidebar of the same article, Burkett stated that he was "not calling Underoath homophobic, but they're against homosexual people having the same rights that straight people do. I find that to be bigoted."[7] Tim McTague admitted that "90 percent of what [Fat Mike] believes in and thinks is wrong about our country and our government, I agree with... [my] opinion doesn't align with the conservative church or the extreme leftist liberal side, either."[7] Multiple rumors have flown around by word of mouth and through the internet of Underoath breaking up, members leaving, and rehab stories. Underoath released a statement confirming none of this was true and they followed through by doing their Canadian tour followed by the 'Taste of Chaos World Tour'.
